I am looking for information on my great-grandfather, JAMES R. JONES, who was the Marion County Sheriff and Chief of Police in South Pittsburg. I believe he was killed in the line of duty. I don't have exact dates but think he died in the 1920s or 1930s. I'd like to know the story. My grandfather, was HUGH RAULSTON JONES (H.R.), one of James' sons. Also looking for information on my great-grandmother's family. She was FRANKIE RAULSTON JONES (GRANDMA JONES), James' wife. She was born in Marion County in May, 1864. Her father was HUGH RAULSTON. Robert W. REEVES (1838-1883) married Mrs. Mintie COUK on June 17, 1873 in Jasper, Marion Co., TN at the home of Colonel Atwood A. HYDE. Mrs. Hyde was Robert W. REEVES' sister. What was Mrs. Mintie COUK's maiden name? Who was her first husband? Mrs. Mintie COUK REEVES died on Jan. 31, 1874 near Nashville, TN at the home of Judge Thomas N. FRAZIER. Her remains were brought to Winchester, TN for burial. Need to know Mintie's maiden name as soon as possible to locate descendants to invite to ceremony for monument to be erected in memory of Robert W. REEVES in Winchester City Cemetery.

To all: I have been told that Alice Hice, Born 1855 in Tennessee, was 100% Native American - Cherokee. She is the daughter of Dan Hice. Looking for information on Andy (Andrew) Wilson, born ca 1810-1820. He had a farm in Tennessee during the Civil War; it was somewhere between Tullahoma (Coffee County) and Nashville. He had a daughter Mary Erastus Dumford (born ca 1831) was a Union soldier from Ohio who was injured in the Battle of Chickamaugua (sp?). Erastus deserted after that and somehow, ended up at Andy Wilson's farm where he died around 1864-65. His wife's name in Ohio was Josephine. His first wife was Susanna South (she died after they had five children). A son was Isaac Dumford. I'm trying to find out where the Wilson farm was. Erastus Dumford was buried on it or in a nearby cemetery. It is thought that he might have married Mary Wilson.

John & Howard BALLARD can be found in the 1820 Smith Co. TN census, the 1830 Marion Co. TN census and Howard along with John's son George Byrd BALLARD are listed in the 1840 Jackson Co. AL census. Neither were listed on Cherokee rolls but descendants of both claim to be of Cherokee descendant through the Ballard side. Howard married Sarah Cross 1812 in Madison Co. KY and is frequently listed as a son of Larkin Ballard but not likely per tax records. John's first son James lists NC as a birthplace. Looking for any information on the ancestry of both John & Howard BALLARD.

Jacob H. HAVNER was born in Marion Co. TN about 1824. He had a brother, Peter. He came to West TN before the Civil War and married Ardenia Jane MARTIN from Hardin Co. TN. My gg,grandfather Joseph D THATCH is on the Marion Co. census in 1850 with Lyda THATCH age 45 (who may be his mother), Josiah age 16, William age 11, and Sarah age 14 (who are probably siblings). Oliver THATCH age 31 is also listed. (Relationship?) I have seen the name spelled THACH on other records of his and family but THATCH on grave markers. Joseph was in the 9th TN Cavalry Company G. The 1900 census list his father as being born in France.(?) Is the father of this family Josiah THACH who is listed as settling in the county near the TN. River? HENRY BARRETT, married to my great-great-grandmother. Story has it that he was killed by a splinter from a tree. He was a foreman or boss over some men cutting logs in Georgia. The splinter stuck him in the heart, he pulled it out and died. I believe that HENRY BARRETT was Granma's 2nd Husband. LILLIE BARRETT is another name given, I think she's an aunt. First husband was JAMES HORACE HOLDSWORTH, he died of cancer. MY GRANDFATHER was JAMES HORACE HOLDSWORTH, JR. Aunt Rosie told me that Jim was just a little boy at the time, and his mother stayed in a dried goods store to get money to raise Jim Jr. At some point he must have migrated to DeKalb County where he married Winnie (Robinson) Holdsworth. They had about 10 children--Sophia Holdsworth (Pete) is my mother. If anybody from Pittsburg Tenn is willing to help, I'd really appreciate it. Need something else to go on. Thanks.

I am trying to locate a Jack Aaron Anderson. He was born in Whitwell, TN somewhere between 1896 and 1898. He had two brothers: Russel and William; one sister: Nellie. Mothers name was Nellie Cody Anderson, later remarried and became Nellie Parrish. Jack married Della Ethel Graham also born in Whitwell, April 6, 1900. They were married in Whitwell around August 1917. I saw you have a book that is a Whitwell Scrapbook. I know you cannot do searches, but I am desperate to find out what happened to Jack. My father-in-law was only nine when his mother (Della) died. Jack abandoned the family and we do not know where he died. He has not been seen since early 1940. Seek any info about family or descendants of Morris Shoemaker, an 18 year-old (b. ca 1844) free black man who lived in Marion Co., TN. He was impressed into Confederate military service in 1861 to cook for Lieutenant Stockton, Co. I, 41st TN Regt. They were brother and sister, they were murdered/tortured to death and robbed for their money. Their home was around Shellmound Rd./Nickajack Dam, before the dam was finished, and fields were flooded ito lakes. Their killers were never discovered, I was 8 years old. James M. KELLY, b (c1805 - c1845), married abt 1827 Anna H (?),(1805- 8/28/1875). Children: All born in Marion County, TN; John R. b 1828, Riley A. b 1830, Amanda 11/28/1833, George Washington b 5/24/1838, and William b 1840. James M. appears in 1830 and 1840 Marion County Census. Anna is listed as HOH in 1850 Marion census. Anna is living with Riley A. in 1870 Lawrence County (Black River TW) AR census. Family may have lived in MO in 1860's. Searching for parents of James M. KELLY and Anna and of course any other info.

Does anyone know if there is a Oak Grove Cemetery in Marion co Tn. just outside of Jasper? I am trying to find the names of Vaughn's buried there because I have found a James Vaughn(an) who lived in Grundy co and died in 1918 and list his burial at Oak Grove. I think this may be my g-grandfather. Thanks

I am looking for a woman by the name of Mary Ann MCGOVERN. she was born April 12,1826 in Marion County, Tenn. Sometime in 1840 she married Linn Collen "Lincoln" Carson. I am trying to find her parents. She died in Quitman, Nodaway County, April 13, 1886. Mother of 11 children.

James ROBERSON, Born 1737 in Scotland, came to America and Married Mary FUQUA at Bledsoe in 1756. They had a number of children, including Roysdon ROBERSON born 1757 in Bledsoe He married Mary Lou STOVALL in that area and they had children including William ROBERSON born in 1806 they moved to Missouri in about 1827. Mary Lou died in 1822 and Roysdon died in 1828 and they were buried in Maries County Mo. However, the two elders James and Mary(Faqua) were buried in The Old Indian Burial Grounds at Marion.. Questions: Did James travel from Scotland alone to Virginia? Is the fact that he came to Cherokee territory and was buried at the old Indian Burial Grounds significant? Who are the other children of James and Mary & Roysdon & Mary Lou? What do you make of the unusual given name Roysdon? Roy's sire? I am looking for info on Macklin MAXFIELD who was in Marion Co. Tenn. according to 1840 Census. He may have been born in Overton Co. Tenn. around 1806. His wife's name was Sarah (do not know maiden name). They had the following children all born in Tenn.: Permelia (my gggrandmother), Sarah, William, Lemuel or Samuel, Georgetta, Martha Jane, and Goodson. Levan, Kilgore: Seeking info on William A. Levan b: 1866-1867 per 1870&1880 Marion Co. Census. Son of James Benjamin Levan, III (Of TN) b: Apr 1844 and Nancy Elizabeth Lnu b: Nov 20, 1848 d: June 19, 1879 (Wife#1 of JBL-III). William A. Levan married Fnu Kilgore. Another perhaps: William A. Levan b: abt 1775 on the 1910 Census of Marion Co that could be he but then the age is off by a few years and this one married a Lee Kilgore b: abt 1876 and had children Walter, Oscar, Lena, Bonnie, Ben, Clint, George, Meda. It is possible (with some errors in Census records) that they could be the same but differences in age of 1910 aren't close to those of 1870 and1880 by enough to make me feel that they are different people. 1850 Marion County Census shows NANCY KILGORE, age 51 LOUISA 20 JAMES A. 34 ALEX 15 ISSAC 6 Issac' Death Certificate shows Father; JIM KILGORE, Mother: HALEY STINNETTE. ALEX'S Death Certificate shows Father: JIM KILGORE, Mother: SUSAN KILGORE. Does anyone doing Marion County research on the KILGORE family know who NANCY'S husband was and when he died? I've heard NANCY was ISSAC's and ALEX's mother but Military Records and Death Certificate's do not bear this out. NANCY also had ason JOHN who moved to Arkansas in mid 1880's. Is NANCY the Grandmother and JAMES A. the father? Will be happy to exchange info with any interested.

Looking for parents of Moses DOTY. Moses was b. 8 Sept 1796, and was listed as a head of household in the 1830 census of Marion County. In the household were his wife and oldest three children (Winaford, b. 1825, Ambrose, b. 1826, and Nancy, b. 1829), and another male born 1790-1800. Is Moses the son of Isaac Doty who lived in Overton County?
