About the Morton – Gilbert Family
Morton-Gilbert Bible, 1806-1914 Transcribed by Patricia A. West 8/15/2015 Page 3 of 3
This is the family Bible of William C. Morton and Sarah M. Gilbert who were married on
July 18, 1850, at the home of her parents, John C. Gilbert Sr. and Rachael (Roberts)
Gilbert in Lincoln Co., Tennessee. William and Sarah (Gilbert) Morton were first cousins.
William C. Morton was the s/o John Morton and Susannah (Roberts) Morton. Their mothers were sisters.
Rachel (Roberts) Gilbert and Susannah (Roberts) Morton were the d/o John and Sarah (Smith)
Roberts. A third Roberts daughter, Lucretia, married D.A. Gilbert, brother of John C. Gilbert.
These families lived near the Lincoln Co./Bedford Co. line around Chestnut Ridge or Petersburg
and were living in Middle Tennessee before 1820. They emigrated from North and South
Carolina. Numerous descendants still live in the Nashville and Bedford/Lincoln Co., Tennessee
area.
To wit:
John Roberts – Sarah Smith Robert had three daughters:
1. Susannah Roberts, b 1807, married John C. Morton and had a son, William C. Morton
2. Rachel Roberts, b 1812, married John C. Gilbert, and had a daughter, Sarah (Gilbert) Morton
3. Lucretia Roberts, b 1820, married D.A. Gilbert, brother of John C. Gilbert
I descend from all three of the daughters.
