Wright, John Wheeler
John Wheeler Wright, the last surviving child of John Wilson and Wilma Dale (Wheeler) Wright, passed away at the age of 93 following an extended illness.
John was born and grew up in Detroit and attended Mackenzie High School. In 1945 he joined the US Navy where he studied electrical engineering. Most of his professional career was spent with AT&T, but he’d always loved to work with his hands. After retiring from the “phone company” he worked in construction and over the years built several houses – the last of which he finished at the age of 74.
He was a licensed minister and performed numerous wedding ceremonies. Prior to his extended illness he enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. John marched to his own beat. He loved meeting new people and telling stories. As a lifelong vegetarian and self-described “health nut” anyone who knew him would describe him as “a real character.”
John was preceded in death by his son Jack Wright and is survived by his sons John (Virginia) Wright of Dearborn Heights, MI; Joe (Sherry) Wright of Niota, TN; his daughters Crystal (Randolph) Bassett of Snellville, GA; Tarrell Wright of Plainview, NE; Kendall Oliver (Jim) of Asheville, NC; Andrea (Darrial) Marshall of Linden, TN; Peggy (Douglas) Glover of Starke, FL; and Corryn Wright-Stasko (Robert) of Barberton, OH; and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service is planned for the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Adair Funeral & Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements.
