Mike Nolen, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiated. Burial took place in Swiss Cemetery.\u00a0\u00a0 Mr. Humphreys, 81, died February 18, 2010 at Ft. Walton Beach Medical Center in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.\u00a0 Doug was born in Hohenwald, on October 3, 1928 to the late Honorable Douglas David Humphreys, Jr. and Elise Hinson Humphreys.\u00a0 After serving his country in the United States Army, Doug returned to Nashville, with his wife, the late Patsy Lewis Humphreys, where he attended Peabody\/Vanderbilt University. He completed his Masters Degree in mathematics, and while working on his Doctorate took a teaching job with McCallie private boys school in Chattanooga.\u00a0 His daughter, Teresa Humphreys Holden, was born. Doug was then offered a teaching position with the prestigious Indian Springs private school near Birmingham, Alabama, where he taught math, directed the glee club, and designed a student convocation building for the school.\u00a0 Two more daughters, Janet Humphreys and Nancy Humphreys Jones, were born. Wanting to always provide the best for his family and seeing an opportunity to use his math skills in the new space program and the developing computer age, he made a career change and moved the family to Huntsville, Alabama.\u00a0 In Huntsville, he helped develop the first mainframe computers for NASA, helped to return the Apollo 13 astronauts to earth, and worked on the Strategic Defense Initiative or \u201cStar Wars\u201d program.\u00a0 In Huntsville, a son was born, David Douglas Humphreys IV. Working on many government contracts led him eventually to the Florida gulf coast area of Destin\/Fort Walton Beach, Florida.\u00a0 After retiring in 1994, he could be found in his short pants and Birkenstock sandals year round.\u00a0 Doug leaves behind daughters; Teresa Holden and her husband, Graham, , Janet Humphreys and her husband, Mark Izard, and Nancy Jones and her husband, Jericho, a son, David Douglas Humphreys IV and wife, Leslie; granddaughters, Shanna, Rhiannon, and Madison; great-granddaughter, Lily; and his dear friend of almost thirty years, Gene Jorgenson.\u00a0 He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas David Humphreys Jr., his mother, Elise Hinson Humphreys, his wife, Patsy Lewis Humphreys, his bother, Boyd Humphreys, and his sister, Andeline Humphreys.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Douglas David Humphreys, III,\u00a0\u00a0 Services for Douglas David Humphreys, III were held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 22, 2010 at McDonald Funeral Home.
