{"id":14617,"date":"2026-05-11T15:07:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T19:07:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/lewis\/?p=14617"},"modified":"2026-05-11T15:07:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T19:07:18","slug":"johnson-gentry-tyrus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/lewis\/johnson-gentry-tyrus\/","title":{"rendered":"Johnson, Gentry Tyrus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Gentry Tyrus Johnson, age 96, of Hohenwald, TN, passed away peacefully at his home on April 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"image-container w100 storyimage_centeralign\">\n<div class=\"imageDiv\">\n<p class=\"caption\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Gentry was born January 13, 1930, in Wayne County to the late May Johnson. He joined the United States Army for two years and, soon after returning home, married Imogean Gilchrist of Collinwood, TN, on December 24, 1952, at the age of 22. Not long after their marriage, he attended trade school in Decatur, AL, where he learned to repair televisions. He later settled in Hohenwald with his family and became co-owner of J &amp; P Furniture.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Gentry was known not only for his work at the furniture store, but also for his hobbies after hours. He loved to fish and had a true passion for it. Some of his happiest moments were spent by the water at his camp on the Tennessee River or along a local creek, with a fishing pole in hand, enjoying the quiet beauty of the outdoors. He also enjoyed hunting, shuffleboard, playing pool, and spending time with the morning Hardee&#8217;s group of friends for many years. He was also a member of Blondy Church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Imogean Johnson; daughter, Wanda Denton of Morganton, NC; son, Dennis Johnson (Janet) of Hohenwald, TN; granddaughters, Amy Vinson of Morganton, NC, Samantha Webb (Andy) of Hohenwald, TN, Chanda Foster (Steve) of Ethridge, TN, and Crystal Johnson of Ethridge, TN; grandson, Stephen Chad Sanders of Centerville, TN; great-grandchildren, Jack Vinson of Asheville, NC, Reagan Webb (Trenton Clayton) of Hohenwald, TN, Casen Sanders of Centerville, TN, and Asher Webb of Hohenwald, TN; great great-grandson, Trace Clayton of Hohenwald, TN; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son, Jeffery &#8220;Piggy&#8221; Johnson of Hohenwald, and his uncle, Covey Johnson of Cypress Inn, who raised him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Visitation with the family was held on Monday, April 6, from 12:00 noon until service time at 3:00 p.m. Burial followed in the Lewis County Memorial Gardens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">McDonald Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Johnson family.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gentry Tyrus Johnson, age 96, of Hohenwald, TN, passed away peacefully at his home on April 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
