Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ellen Malugin Amacher; two daughters, Jan (Randy) Curtis of Panama City, FL and Lisa (Randall) Morrison of Tullahoma; two sisters, Sara Peery of Hohenwald and Mary Ruth Melton of Johnson City; grandchildren, Amy (Casey) Hagee, Kaysville, UT, Michael (Misty) Curtis of Youngstown, FL, Kelly Morrison of Murfreesboro and Hayley Morrison of Tullahoma. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Madison and Emma Hagee of Kaysville, UT. MC DONALD FUNERAL HOME in charge of arrangements.<\/p>\n

Former Mayor of Hohenwald, devoted husband for 71 years and respected Attorney for more than six decades, on Friday, March 25, 2005 in Maury Regional Hospital at age 91. Born July 21, 1913 in Milan TN to John J. and Hattie Capelle Keaton. Attended Vanderbilt University and remained a lifelong, loyal fan of the Commodores. Married the former Lillian Stephens on August 18, 1933. Worked for the Tennessee Highway Department in the 1930’s. Earned his law degree through night classes at the Nashville School of Law and was admitted to the Tennessee bar in 1940. Practiced law in Milan for several years in the firm of Rhoades and Keaton. Enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served as a Sergeant with the Signal Corps in the Philippines. Settled in Hohenwald after the war and opened a law office on the second floor of the First National Bank building. Also owned Keaton Insurance Agency for many years. Practiced law into his late 80’s, arguing a case before the Court of Appeals of Tennessee in 2000. Mayor of Hohenwald from 1951 to 1967. Named Tennessee Mayor of the Year in 1958 by the Tennessee Municipal League of which he served as President. He was on the executive committee of the National League of Cities. From 1959 to 1971 he was Vice Vhairman of the State Board of Equalization and from 1975 to 1996 he served on the Assessment Appeal Commission. He was a Founding Member of the local Five County Bar and was a fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation. He was a Member of the Tennessee Bar Association Board of Governors and the American Judicare Society. He also served as a Member Judge of the Court of the Judiciary for eight years. Received the Civic Heritage Award from the Hohenwald Chamber of Commerce and was honored as an Outstanding Alumnus of the Nashville College of Law. An avid golfer for many years and a Founding Member of the Hohenwald Golf Club. Long time Member of the Hohenwald United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, LeRoy Keaton. Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Lillian; son, William Capelle Keaton Jr. and daughter in law Belma of Brentwood; daughter, Camille Kelley of Hohenwald; five granddaughters; four great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5 til 8 p.m. on Sunday at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Hohenwald United Methodist Church with the Reverends Chip Hunter and Gary Wedgewood officiating. Burial will follow in the Swiss Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Hohenwald United Methodist Church Endowment Fund.<\/p>\n
