Food Market, Trucking Firm owner was community minded
One of the founders of a trucking company in Taylor (MI) and an owner of a former food market, Mrs. Mary Lou Carroll, 91, died Sunday, June 2, 2002. Mrs. Carroll was born Mary Lou Lynch on Aug. 21, 1911 in Hohenwald, TN. Mrs. Carroll graduated as valedictorian of her high school class and taught school before marrying Russell Carroll of Hohenwald. The Carrolls moved to Taylor in 1934, where they built, owned and operated Carroll’s Market at the intersection of Allen and Northline roads, where Burger King stands now. Together, they established Russ Carroll and Sons Trucking. Mr. Carroll died in 1994 Respected and admired for their honesty and hard work, Mr. and Mrs. Carroll were known for building their friendships and business on a handshake you could count on, said their oldest granddaughter, Sue Carroll. The two were known for their love of friends and family and for their service to the community, she said. The Carrolls were active members of Sunset Church of Christ in Taylor. They had threes sons. Charles Douglas died in 1970 and James Russell died in 1996. In addition to her granddaughter, Mrs. Carroll is survived by a third son, William Carroll; one brother Earl Turley Lynch of Chicago; 14 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Martenson Funeral Home in Allen Park (MI) . Interment was at Michigan Memorial Park in Huron Township. Nancy was a wonderful person and during her career as a guidance counselor and teacher she touched the lives of many young people. She taught at Joelton Elementary (2 years), Maplewood (4 years), Stratford (21 years), and McGavock (4 years). After retiring from the Metro School system, she worked an additional seven years at the Lewis County Elementary and Middle schools. She was the daughter of the late Wilma and Ed Houchin. Survivors include her husband, William Crowell of Hohenwald; daughter, Brandi (Richard) Carroll and granddaughter, Sydney Carroll of Hermitage; sister, Marlene (Tony) Butts of Hartsville; brothers, Ken and Tony Houchin, both of Madison as well as several nieces and nephews.<\/p>\n
