James Wallace (Jimmy) Mathis, age 96, of Tottys Bend departed his earthly home on Christmas Eve, his favorite holiday, surrounded by his family at Maury Regional Hospital. Jimmy was born in Tottys Bend, TN, on December 20, 1927. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 70 years, Wilma Mathis. He was the son of the late Grady and Mamie Coleman Mathis and the brother of the late Billy Mathis, Danny Mathis, Betty Lou Orton, Georgia Heffington, and Celia Yates. He is survived by his sons, Gary (Gayle) Mathis and Tim Mathis, grandchildren, Amanda Mathis and James (Chelsea) Mathis, and great grandsons, Britton James Mathis and Wiley Mathis.
A lifelong farmer, Mr. Mathis owned and operated Mathis Angus Farms with his sons. He was the owner of three TN Century Farms. He was long time member of the American Angus Association and Tennessee Cattleman’s Association, and his farm is recognized as an American Angus Association Historic Angus Herd and is in the Tennessee Top ten American Angus Association registered calves. He had served on various farm boards: vice president and board member of the Hickman County Farm Bureau; chair and board member of Hickman Farmers Cooperative; chair and board member of Hickman County Agricultural Extension; and board member of TN Pork Producers. He received the 2010 Cattle Producer of the Year from the TN Cattleman’s Association. Magazines TN Farmer, Farm Progress, TN Pork Producer Journal, and TN Farmers Cooperator have featured articles about him. He served as an elder at Twomey Church of Christ. Faith, Farm, Family and Friends centered his life.
Pallbearers will be James Mathis, John Mathis, John Heffington, Dwayne Mathis, Chris Neely, Mike Orton, Steve Hoover, and Bennet Graham. Honorary Pallbearers will be Britton Mathis, Wiley Mathis, the men of Twomey Church of Christ and the men of the Totty’s Bend Community,
Those who wish to make donations in memory of Jimmy may do so to the Tottys Bend Cemetery upkeep fund or to the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort.
Visitation with the family will be 29 Dec 2023 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM and 30 Dec 2023 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at McDonald Funeral Home – Hickman County. Funeral Services will be 30 Dec 2023 at 1:00 PM at McDonald Funeral Home – Hickman County with Burial to follow at Totty’s Bend Cemetery, Duck River, TN.
