Mathis, Danny Lee
Danny Lee Mathis, age 76 of the Totty’s Bend community in Hickman County, Tennessee, passed away on May 14, 2023 at his home in Duck River, Tennessee. Danny was born on April 10, 1947 in Nashville, Tennessee to the late Grady & Mamie Coleman Mathis.
Danny grew up in Totty’s Bend on the family farm. He called Totty’s Bend “The Hub of The World”. Danny graduated from Hickman County High School in 1965. A few years later he joined the U.S. Army from January 22, 1969 until October 7, 1970. After his discharge from the Army Danny worked at Tencon until the plant moved to east Tennessee in 1993. He was there for 25 years. Danny then worked as a trucking broker for the remainder of his career. He often answered the phone “dispatch” to other truckers carrying loads and ended with his own solo.
Danny was devoted to many organizations in his community. He served as Hickman County Commissioner from 1982-1990. Danny was always proud of the plaque the county awarded him for his years of service and it remains on display at the Hickman County Middle School. He volunteered as a 4H leader through the 90’s, and later served as road commissioner from 2010-2022.
After retirement, Danny enjoyed picking kids up from Day School and Grade School. They looked forward to riding on the 4-wheeler around the farm to check on the cows, and helping to cut, rake and bale hay. Danny always had the best herd of cattle and enjoyed managing and improving his herd. He enjoyed showing cattle and teaching his kids and grandkids about cattle, and the love of growing and feeding beef cattle.
Danny was known for being the life of the party and fun to be around. He loved all his nieces, nephews, and kids dearly. He is survived by his two children, Dwayne Alan Mathis (Misty) and Kimberley Ann “Bebo” Jenkins (Jonathan). His stepchildren include Jamie (Neely) Johnston and Chris Neely. Two Step-Grandchildren are Blake Johnston and Chase Johnston. Paternal Grandchildren include Peyton Mathis, Kara Mathis, Kilee Mathis, Anna Kate Jenkins, Bryson Mathis and Jase Jenkins.
Visitation with the family will be 16 May 2023 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM and 17 May 2023 from 12:00 – 2:00 PM at McDonald Funeral Home – Hickman County. Funeral Services will be 17 May 2023 at 2:00 PM at McDonald Funeral Home – Hickman County with burial to follow at Totty’s Bend Cemetery, Duck River, TN.
