Lewis Co TNGenweb: Queries & Look Up Requests
Visit our new TNGenWeb Project Query Boards
What is a Query? Queries are inquiries about surnames or ancestors that are posted on a county site within The USGenWeb Project system. They are designed to be posted online for others researching in the county who may also be interested in the same surnames.
What information should I include in my query? To better ensure responses to your questions, it is usually best to keep queries short and focused. Defining an individual or family by a marriage on a specific date in a particular place gets the best responses to text queries. You should also specify the type of information you have (and will share) or need. For example, if you have descendant information, be sure to tell folks that you are interested in ancestry but will share some of the descendant information. Trading data between like-interested individuals is what can make genealogy on the Internet so rewarding.
How do I post a query? The TNGenWeb Project is rolling out new county query boards for the entire state. You will be able to subscribe to any TN county and post/follow those boards. Please go to the new queries page at http://tngenweb.org/boards to register for your new account and select the boards you wish follow. Anyone can read any board but you must register and be a member to post a query.
Directions Once You Are Registered: Once you have created your account, select the county. This will bring up a page where where you can make a post. If you look all the way to the bottom in the darker blue line, you will see a check mark and “subscribe forum” Click on the check mark and it will go away and you will be subscribed to the forum (you must be logged in to do this). This will let you know when a post has been made to your county.
As always, please consider sending a private thank you note/email if your query results in positive news. Send a follow up message if the information was significant – let the volunteer who provided the information share that feeling of finding important information.
How do I request a lookup? Currently, there are no look up volunteers for Lewis Co but someone out there with county resources may be able to help you. Post a query on the TNGenWeb Project’s Lewis County board or, if you are on Facebook, join the Lewis County Historical Society’s Facebook page. It is very active and the folks there are more than willing to share information.
If you would like to volunteer to do look ups from a Lewis Co resource/s in your possession, please send the county coordinator a message including your name, the email you wish to use and the name of the resource/s. I will add your contact information and the resource you are willing to share to this page.
