Dorothy Jane “Dot” Moore, age 57, of Hohenwald died Saturday, December 26, 2009, at Lewis County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was a native of Lawrence County.  Funeral services were conducted at Neal Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009 with Art McCormick officiating. Interment took place at Lawrence County Memorial Gardens.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Naley Orbin and Annie Mae Ashmore Moore and two brothers, Melvin Moore and Troy Moore.  She is survived by two sisters, Mary Evelyn Longshore (Doyce) of Ethridge and Iva Lou Moore of Hohenwald; three brothers, Paris Moore (Leda) of Hohenwald, Carl Moore (Marilyn) of Sun City, Arizona, and Lloyd Moore of Bayfield, Colorado.

Samuel Jackson Johnson, age 70 of Arrington passed away December 27, 2009.  Born in Williamson County to the late Bernice Rauleigh and Josie Price Johnson.  Funeral services were conducted 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home with Elder Clifton Johnson officiating. Burial followed at Johnson Hollow Cemetery.  He is survived by wife, Nell H. Johnson; two sons, Danny (Mandy) Weigel of Hohenwald and Price (Andrea) Johnson of College Grove; daughter, Kathy (Joe) Vick of Bell Buckle; two brothers, B. Carroll (Betsy) Johnson of College Grove and Kenneth (Wanda) Johnson of Smyrna; two sisters, Mattie Sue Johnson of Arrington and Lavene (George) Neal of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.  Memorials may be made to Leipers Fork Primitive Baptist Church. 

Perry Ray Carroll, age 53, passed away December 25, 2009 at his residence in Hohenwald.   Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. December 27, 2009 with Glen Floyd officiating. Burial took place in the Twin Oaks Cemetery.  Mr. Carroll was born April 29, 1956 in Trenton, Michigan to the late Leonard Ray Carroll and Darlene Nancy Mae Williams Carroll. He was a laborer with Durham Construction.  Survivors include two daughters, Penny Allison Carroll of San Fransico, California, and Elizabeth Amber Carroll of Hohenwald; two brothers, Todd Richard Carroll and Randy Clark Carroll, both of Hohenwald; one sister, Debbie Darlene Spurgeon, also of Hohenwald; and two grandchildren.

Sharon Mae Russell, 63, passed away December 21, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia.   Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. December 23, 2009 at New Hope Baptist Church with Jerry McDonald officiating. Burial followed in the New Hope Cemetery. McDonald Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  A homemaker, Mrs. Russell was born September 17, 1946 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to the late George Bennett Sr. and Hazel Mae Cummings Bennett.  Survivors include her husband, Ellis Dean Russell of Hohenwald; two sons, Samuel Marsh, Jr. of San Diego, California and William Evan Marsh of Brownsburg, Indiana; one daughter, Nancy Beckelheimer of Hohenwald; four step-sons, Tracy and Danny Russell, both of Springfield, Missouri, Randall Russell of Farmington, Missouri, and Josh Donofrio of Knoxville; two step-daughters, Teresa Brennamon of Springfield, Missouri and Summer Donofrio of Knoxville; one brother, George Bennett, Jr. of Cherryville, North Carolina; one sister, Nancy Bennett, also of Cherryville; twenty-one grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Becky Russell.

Christy Lynn Webb, age 35, passed away Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Perry Community Hospital in Linden.   Funeral services were held Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the McDonald Funeral Home Chapel with Artie Collins and Mark McDonald, ministers of Springer Church of Christ, officiating. Burial took place in the Springer Cemetery.  Christy was born January 10, 1974 in Hohenwald to Dwight and Joyce Stubblefield Webb.  In addition to her parents, she is survived by paternal grandmother, Bessie Webb of Hohenwald and maternal grandparents, Joella and Jerry Hensley of Linden.

Annie Bell Whitworth, 83, died December 15, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia.  A memorial service was held 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 18, 2009 at the Grinders Creek Church of Christ with Elton Jackson and Scott Holt officiating. McDonald Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  Mrs. Whitworth was a daughter of the late Samuel David Edwards and Maudie Mae Adams Edwards. A retired employee of Dana Corporation, she was born January 29, 1926 in Birchwood.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hershel Whitworth.  Survivors include one son, Billy Whitworth of Columbia; three daughters, Beverly Whitworth of Hohenwald, Gwenda Hall of Culleoka, and Linda Fronczak of Green Cove Springs, Florida; seven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and five great, great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Susie Jane Sims, 83, died December 16, 2009 at Lewis County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  Funeral services were held at McDonald Funeral Home December 17, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. with Dwayne Sparks officiating. Burial took place in the Deavers Cemetery in Hohenwald.  Born March 2, 1926, Mrs. Sims was a daughter of the late Jones Hensley and Lula Flippo Hensley. She was a homemaker.  Survivors include two brothers, Leslie Hensley and Billy Joe Hensley, both of Hohenwald; one sister, Pearl Uno, also of Hohenwald; several nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sims was preceded in death by her first husband, Wilson Lawson, and second husband, Roy Sims.

Sylvia Lois Hinson, age 75, died December 14, 2009 at her residence in Hohenwald.  Graveside services were held 11 a.m. December 15, 2009 at the Deavers Cemetery with Mark Harper and Sam Livingston officiating. McDonald Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  Mrs. Hinson, a self-employed merchant, was born September 29, 1934 in Perry County to the late Orice Allen and Lockie Bell Luttrell Tillman. She was married to the late Alvis Hinson. 

Donalie Ann (Owens) Stormes, 45, lost her battle with breast cancer December 8, 2009, at her home in Vichy, Missouri.   Funeral services were held at the Highway E Church of Christ in Rolla, Missouri at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 12, 2009 with George Hewlett officiating. Null and Son Funeral Home of Rolla was in charge of arrangements.  She was an accomplished educator earning her Bachelor of Science from David Lipscomb University in English Education. She taught in Paragould, Arkansas and Vienna, Missouri before moving to the Rolla School district.  While at the Rolla High School, she taught English, worked with the Student Council, Link Crew and the Student 2 Student Program. She attained the honor of being named Educator of the Year for the Rolla School System in 2009.  Mrs. Stormes was also a member of Chapter EM of PEO. She served on the Little Prairie Bible Camp board and was a member of Highway E Church of Christ in Rolla.  Donalie was born October 14, 1964 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Donald Lee Owens and Dianna Jean (Gordon) Owens. She was married to Russell Andrew (Andy) Stormes and had two children: Margaret (Maggie) Ann Stormes and Russell Isaac Stormes of Vichy.  In addition to her husband, children and mother, she is survived by a sister, Deena Rae Owens Reeves of Hohenwald; a brother, Darren Lee Owens, also of Hohenwald; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Sue Stormes of Rolla, Missouri.  Her father, Donald Lee Owens, preceded her in death.  A scholarship fund has been established in Donalie’s name for students to attend Missouri Association of Student Council Summer Leadership Camp. Memorial contributions are suggested to C.O.R.E./Donalie Stormes Memorial Scholarship, P.O. Box 1204, Rolla, Missouri 65402 or Phelps Regional Hospice.

Randy Wayne Cooper     Funeral services were held December 16, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. for Randy Wayne Cooper.   Mr. Cooper, age 59, died December 14, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia after suffering with cancer.  David Carroll officiated with burial in the Lewis County Memorial Gardens. McDonald Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  An Engineer Tech for the State of Tennessee, Mr. Cooper was born July 18, 1950 to the late William Robert Himes and Tommye Cooper Himes.  Survivors include his wife, Judy Elaine Peery Cooper; one daughter, Katria (Rodney) Smith of Lawrenceburg; two sisters, Clara (George) Grover of Crossville and Susie Brown of Hohenwald; three grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Plummer Harrison Vaughn  Local businessman Plummer Harrison, age 87, passed away peacefully at his home on December 9, 2009.   Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. December 11, 2009 in the McDonald Funeral Home Chapel with Malcom George, minister of Lomax Church of Christ, officiating. Interment followed in the Swiss Cemetery Mausoleum.  Mr. Vaughan was born May 11, 1922 in Big Rock, Tennessee to the late Plummer Harrison Vaughan Sr. and Effie Laura Stimpson Vaughan. He and his wife of 63 years, Martha Elizabeth Ellis Vaughan, moved to Hohenwald in 1959 to establish V & W Ready Mix Concrete Company.  In addition to his wife, Mr. Vaughan is survived by a son, Johnny R. Vaughan of Hohenwald; two daughters, Gypsy Jo (Gary) Schwendimann and Scarlette Woodall, both of Hohenwald; one sister, Nell Moore of Hopkinsville, Kentucky; five granddaughters, Elizabeth Marie Vaughan of Hohenwald, Heidi (Russell) Cothran of Columbia, Kathryn “Cassi” Lark (Eric) Parsons of Nashville, Poppy (Perry) Bass of Bremen, Georgia, and Jade Woodall of Nashville; one grandson, Noah Vaughan Woodall of Hohenwald; one great granddaughter, Paisley Burklow of Carrollton, Georgia; and one great grandson, Harrison Cothran of Columbia.  In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 73, at Citizens Bank in Hohenwald, to be used for their Needy Children’s Christmas Fund.

Tawny Betz, daughter of James and Rose Betz of Hohenwald, died Friday, December 4, 2009 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. Tawny was 38.  She has been a resident of the Perry County Nursing Home for the past several years.  She is also survived by her sister, Christina R. Runions and grandmother, Ethel Earhart of Dickson.

Thomas Alvin Curtis, age 69, died December 1, 2009 at his residence.   Funeral services were held Saturday, December 5, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home with Richard Tate officiating.  Mr. Curtis was born July 1, 1940 to the late Leonard Franklin Curtis and Edith Nevada Haygood Curtis.  Survivors include two sons, Alvin (Lynda) Curtis of Holland, Michigan and Ronnie (Shawna) Curtis of Stephenville, Texas; one daughter, Candy (John) May of Mineral Bluff, Georgia; three brothers, Bruce and Joe Curtis, both of Hohenwald, and Donnie Curtis of Centerville; three sisters, Jane Runions, Carolyn Haymons and Lynda Devore, all of Hohenwald; two granddaughters, Kailyn and Sara May, both of Mineral Bluff, Georgia; a special friend, Margaret Scott of Mt. Pleasant.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Curtis was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Frances Scott Curtis; a step-son, James Anthony LaRue; four brothers, James, Frank, Loyd and Stanley Curtis; and one sister, Ruby Barnett.

Kirby McMunn, age 89, a resident of Union Place in Columbia, passed away on Friday, December 4, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center.  Funeral services for Mr. McMunn were conducted Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Mark Whitt officiating. Burial followed in the Athens City Cemetery in Athens, Alabama at 3:30 p.m. with military honors provided by the United States Navy.  Born June 11, 1920 in Limestone County, Alabama, he was the son of the late Walter and Ellen Byram McMunn and the husband of the late Irene McMahan McMunn. He retired from Monsanto as a heavy equipment operator. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was of the Baptist faith.  Mr. McMunn is survived by two daughters: Patricia (Tommy) Dooley of Columbia and Elaine (Billy) Runions of Hohenwald; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by five sisters and six brothers. 

Harold Allen Dyer of Holiday, 72, died December 5, 2009.   Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald. Interment followed in the Memorial Gardens.  Born February 11, 1936, Mr. Dyer served in the United States Army and worked as a forklift mechanic in Nashville.  Harold and his wife, Valley Juanita Stephens Dyer, were married for 45 years and worked to raise their children. After retirement, they moved to the Tennessee River, a lifelong dream. His hobbies included building and flying model airplanes, working on cars, having fun and loving his family.  Survivors include his wife, Juanita of Holiday; one son, William Smith of Hohenwald; two daughters, Helen Quillen and Carrie Tatum, both of Hohenwald; two grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and one great-great grandson; two brothers, Glenn Dyer of Garner, North Carolina; and Randel Dyer of Hendersonville; three sisters, Mary Jane Crotzer of Whitehouse, Judy Ragland of Bethpage, and Peggy Pennington of Portland; lots of nieces, nephews, and friends.  Mr. Dyer was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce; mother and father, Earl and Mary Ellen Townes Dyer; two brothers and two sisters.

Jessie Lee Mayberry, age 92, died December 6, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia.  Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2009 in the chapel of McDonald Funeral Home with Malcom George, minister of Lomax Church of Christ, officiating. Burial followed in the Charles L. Nickell Memorial Park in Centerville.  Mrs. Mayberry was born May 22, 1917 in Hickman County to the late Osber and Dillie Pevahouse Loveless. She was a homemaker.  Survivors include one son, David (Hattie) Mayberry of Centerville; two daughters, Wilma Harris and Barbara (Jerry) Carroll of Hohenwald; ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and eleven great-great grandchildren.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mayberry was preceded in death by her husband, James D. Mayberry and son-in-law, Frank Harris

John E. Black, age 63, a resident of Big Swan Road in Hohenwald, passed away on Tuesday, December 2, at the Alvin C. York Medical Center in Murfreesboro.  A graveside inurnment was conducted Monday, December 7, 2009 at Polk Memorial Gardens with Bro. Kenneth Jenkins and Bro. Rick Points officiating. Military honors was provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19.  Williams Funeral Home in Columbia was in charge of the arrangements. The Athens, AL, native was born January 5, 1946. He was the son of the late Will Black and Myra Wales Black. John served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He was retired after many years of service with Lasko Metal Products. John had also worked as a security guard for Wal-Mart.  Survivors include his son: Steve Black of Columbia; daughters: Felicia Morris, Tasha Cash and Jacqueline Kincaid, all of Columbia; one brother: James “Jack” (Carol) Black of Columbia; one sister: Leslie Stockard of Columbia; grandchildren: Julie Black, Jenie Black, Hannah Cash, Star Liggons, Ethan Smith, Abby Smith and David Cole Kincaid, all of Columbia; nephews and nieces: Jimmy (Dee) Tennyson of Columbia, Bobby (Beverly) Tennyson of Culleoka, Barbara (Donald) Potts of Santa Fe, Sandra (Alfred) Ervin of Santa Fe, Janice (Darrel) Teeples of Columbia, Becky (David) Ring of Columbia, Elizabeth (Taz) Barnes of Mt. Richard E. “Dick” Nelson, 81, formerly of Hohenwald, died Friday, November 27, 2009 in Vero Beach, Florida.  Arrangements were under the direction of Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach, Florida.  He was born May 29, 1928 in Yakima, Washington and lived in Short Hills and Livingston, New Jersey before moving to Vero Beach in 1965 with his family. He moved to Hohenwald in 2006.  Before retirement, he was a stock broker in New York City and later in Vero Beach. He also operated the Riviera Restaurant in Vero Beach. He belonged to St. Helen Catholic Church and later to Holy Cross Catholic Church.  He is survived by his wife, Gloria Nelson of Hohenwald; three sons, Rick Nelson of Bald Head Island, North Carolina, Dan and Tom Nelson of Vero Beach; two daughters, Megan Nelson of Vero Beach, and Courtney Keeton off Hohenwald; three brothers, Bob Nelson of Texas, Bill and Tom Nelson of Denver, Colorado; three sisters, Mary Ann Bogan and Betty Jane Nelson, both of Denver, Colorado, and Pat Shiels of St. Augustine, Florida; and eight grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Celine Nelson.  At the request of the family, no services were planned other than a private family service to be held at a later date.  Donations may be made to VNA Hospice, 901 37th Street, Vero Beach, Florida 32960

Mary Ruth Melton, 84, died November 24, 2009 at NHC Health Care in Johnson City.  Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. November 29, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald. Malcom George, minister of Lomax Church of Christ, officiated. Interment took place in the Swiss Cemetery.  Born February 25, 1925 in Dover, Ohio, Mrs. Melton was a daughter of the late Walter Christopher Amacher and Vivian Sisco Amacher.  Survivors include a son John W. (Carol) Melton of Johnson City; one granddaughter, Ashley (David) Blevins of Montgomery, Alabama; two grandsons, Dr. Casey (Amy) Melton of Mobile, Alabama, and Scotty (Hope) Melton of Montgomery, Alabama; seven great grandchildren, Cooper, Collier, Chapman and Crawford Blevins and Caroline Melton, all of Montgomery, Alabama, Kayla and Laney Melton of Mobile, Alabama.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Melton was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Wilson Melton; one brother, Buddy Amacher; and one sister, Sarah Jane Peery.

James Ross Holden, age 81, a resident of Mt. Joy Road in Mt. Pleasant, passed away Monday, November 30, 2009 at NHC Columbia.  Graveside services for Mr. Holden will be conducted today, Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Polk Memorial Gardens with Rev. Rock Jaggers officiating.  Born on August 14, 1928 in Hampshire, Mr. Holden was the son of the late William and Lillie B. Rochelle Holden. He worked as a school bus driver and carpenter. A member of Cedar Hill Church of Christ, Mr. Holden was an avid fisherman and hunter.  Survivors include one daughter: Glenda Holden of Hampshire; two sisters; Alice Garner and Susie Church, of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by three brothers: Dude Holden, Hughes Holden, William Holden; one sister: Elease Holden.

William Oliver Hess, age 77, died at his home November 22, 2009 after a brief illness with cancer.   Mr. Hess was born in Momence, Illinois and moved to Lewis County from Richmond, Virginia. He was a veteran of the Korean War and cum laude graduate of the University of Illinois, Champaign Urbana. He was a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church in Columbia, a member of the Lewis County Lions Club and a 16 plus gallon blood donor for the American Red Cross.  Mr. Hess, a Certified Public Accountant, opened an accounting office in Lewis County in 1978 in the Cordell Hul Building and retired in 1999.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmond and Mary Baker Hess; a brother, Edmond Jr. “Tinker”.   Those surviving include his wife of 53 years, Catharine Mapp Hess; his children, Pamela Lynn Hess of Ft. Pierce, Florida, Gregory Edward Hess and Patrick William Hess of Port St. Lucie, Florida, and Dolores Hess Hinson of Hohenwald; ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and one brother, Charles Elihu Hess of Armona Park, Illinois.  Memorials may be made to the St. Peters Episcopal Church Outreach Committee in Columbia or to the American Red Cross.

Rickey Adam Seagraves, age 23, a resident of Trousdale Lane in Columbia, passed away on Sunday, November 29, at Vanderbilt Medical Center.  Funeral services for Adam was conducted Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Rick Points officiating. Burial will follow in the Polk Memorial Gardens.  Born July 14, 1986 in Maury County, Adam was the son of Rickey and Leta Deavers Seagraves. He worked in the shipping department of Southeastern Shirt Factory and as a cashier and bagger for Food Lion. Adam loved wrestling, auto racing and monster trucks.  Survivors in addition to his parents, include: his grandparents: Eugene and Marie Seagraves of Columbia; aunts and uncles: Sherry Dale, Billy Seagraves, and Charles McCoy, all of Columbia, Wanda Walton of Pulaski, Ronnie Seagraves of Lewisburg, Terry Seagraves of Williamsport, Darla Blackwell of Hohenwald; his faithful dog, Phoebe; numerous cousins.  He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Willene Defoe.

James Thomas “Jimmy” Brooks, Jr. of Lyles, formerly of Hampshire, died November 25, 2009.   Funeral services were held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 28, 2009 in the chapel of McDonald Funeral Home in Centerville with Stan Butt, Matthew Kincade, and Bill McDonald officiating. Interment was in Little Lot Cemetery in Hickman County.  Mr. Brooks, age 67, was born November 9, 1942 in Hampshire to the late James Thomas Brooks, Sr. and Mary Cleo Shannon Brooks.  A 1960 graduate of Lewis County High School, he was an employee of Trigreen Implement Co. in Columbia and was an elder of the Anderson Bend Church of Christ.  He is survived by his wife, Edith Mae Mobley Brooks of Lyles; daughters, Deborah Joyce “Debbie” (Stephen) Mencer of Centerville and Kristie Lea (Richie) Turnbo of Columbia; two grandchildren; two brothers, Billy Brooks of Columbia and Sammy Brooks of Cross Bridges; three sisters, Alice Faye Hines of Columbia, Betsy Tiller of Hohenwald, and Marie Smith of Kentucky.

Deborah Karen Sharp Whidby of Nashville, formerly of Hohenwald, died October 14, 2009 at Baptist Hospital.   Mrs. Whidby, 55, was born December 12, 1953 to Donald Earl Sharp and Eunice French Howell.  Graveside services will be held Sunday, November 29, 2009 at Palestine Cemetery in Lewis County.   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, William Lee Whidby and a daughter, Helen Louise Whidby.  Mrs. Whidby is survived by a son, Chris McWherter of Nashville and five grandchildren, Brittney Anderson, Nathan Leonard, Dakota Miller, Alex Sood, and Johnathan Sood.

Freddie Fay Mathis, age 69, died November 19, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia.   Funeral services were held November 21, 2009, 1 p.m., at McDonald Funeral Home with Jimmy Garner officiating. Burial followed in Swiss Cemetery.  Mrs. Mathis was born September 8, 1940 to the late Luther D. Stowe and Hettie Crowell.  Survivors include her husband Claude Mathis of Hohenwald; a son, Bobby Joe Smith of Nashville; two step-daughters, Karen (Kenny) Prentice of Hohenwald, and Karrie (Ed) Gallaga of Napierville, Illinois; one brother, Chuck Stowe of Hohenwald; two sisters, Billie Ruth Hopkins of Oak Grove, Louisiana and JoAnn Rasbury of Waynesboro, and eight grandchildren.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Stowe.

William Earl Carroll, 77, of Linden, passed away at his home on November 10, 2009. Funeral services were held Friday, November 13, 2009 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Young Funeral Home with Hoyt Kirk officiating. Burial followed in the Dean Cemetery.  Mr. Carroll was the retired owner of Shell Service Station in Linden. He was born July 5, 1932 to the late Ed Carroll and Gladys Horner Carroll.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Danny Earl Carroll, a brother, Hubert Carroll, and two sisters, Elizabeth Hickerson and Eula Belcher.  Survivors include his wife, Betty June Carroll of Linden; daughter Dena (David) Irwin, also of Linden; daughter-in-law, Debbie Pace Carroll of Hohenwald; and grandchildren, Dustin and Danielle Carroll, and Dedra and Drew Irwin.

Jeffrey Trent Cross, age 47, died November 13, 2009 at his home.  Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 14, 2009 in the McDonald Funeral Home Chapel. Horace Farr officiated.  Born October 5, 1962 in Nashville, Mr. Cross was a son of Ludene Seiber Carroll and the late Atlas Cross of Hohenwald.  In addition to his mother, Mr. Cross is survived by his wife, Victoria Hinson Cross; daughter Lois Curtis of Michigan; sister, Patty Robertson of Hohenwald; step-father, Lonnie Carroll of Hohenwald; step-sister Diane Cohen of Center, Alabama; half-sister, Melinda Sanders of Hohenwald; and two grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by, in addition to his father, a brother, Bruce Cross, and a sister, Peggy Carroll.

David Randall “Randy” Jones, age 51, died November 8, 2009 at his residence in Hohenwald.   Funeral services were held November 10, 2:00 p.m., at Blondy Church of God with Marcus Webb and Bill Webb officiating. McDonald Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  Married to Nicole Rene Gandy Jones, Mr. Jones was employed as a pipe fitter with Local 572. He was born October 26, 1958 to Dorothy Frances Schachte Jones and the late Robert William Jones II.  Survivors, in addition to his wife and mother, are three daughters, Laneia Murray of Phoenix, Arizona, Leah Jones and Abby Jones, both of Hohenwald; three brothers, Larry F. Jones of Dalton, Georgia, Terry Alan Jones of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and Charles Richard Jones of Lawrenceburg; two sisters, Betty Ann Holt and Lori Lynn Brewer, both of Hohenwald; two grandsons, Slade and Eli Murray, both of Phoenix, Arizona.  In addition to his father, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by a brother, Robert “Bobby” William Jones III. Jamie Wayne Harder     Services for Jamie Wayne Harder, age 65, of Waynesboro, were held Friday, November 6, 2009, 1:00 p.m., at Shackelford Funeral Chapel in Waynesboro. Greg Eaton officiated with burial in Throgmorton Cemetery in Wayne County.   Born April 22, 1944 in Hohenwald, Mr. Harder died Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham. He was a son of the late Carlos James and Cyrena Hickerson Harder of Hohenwald.  Mr. Harder was a Vietnam veteran serving in the United States Army from 1965-1967 and the Tennessee Army National Guard from 1981-2002. He was employed at Wayne Medical Center as a medical laboratory manager and was a member of the American Legion.  He is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Shirley Walker Harder; a son, Brett Harder and wife Patsy, all of Waynesboro; daughter, Natasha Harder of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; two grandchildren; a brother, Buddy Harder of Linden; and two sisters, Imodean Clay of Chattanooga, and Sue Hurt of Hohenwald.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Harder was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Casteel.

Connie Lee Prince,  age 49, died November 7, 2009 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.  Funeral services were held November 9, 2009, 11 a.m., at Freedom Holy Temple Church with Glen Floyd and Michael Davis officiating. Interment followed in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Iron City with McDonald Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.   Born June 5, 1960 in Peoria, Illinois, Mrs. Prince was the daughter of Shelby Woodham Taylor and the late Frank Donald Taylor of Hohenwald. She and her husband, David Prince, resided in Iron City.  Survivors in addition to her husband and mother are a son, David Lee Prince, Jr. of Iron City; five brothers, Terry Taylor of Little Rock, Arkansas, Tommy, Tim, Earl, and Allen Taylor, all of Hohenwald; three sisters, Angie Quillen, Mary Hankins, and Kim Holloway, also of Hohenwald and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to her father, Mrs. Prince was preceded in death by three brothers, Bobby, Frankie, and Wade Taylor, and sister, Pam Sanders.

Robert Alan Layne, age 33, died November 5, 2009 after an extended illness.   A conductor for CXS Railroad, Mr. Layne was born June 30, 1976 in Florence, Alabama. He was married to Tanonni Cothran Layne of Hohenwald.  Mr. Layne was a member of the Salem Church of Christ. He served in capacities throughout his adult life in Churches of Christ, as youth minister, teacher, preacher, and deacon.  Services were held at 1:00 p.m. November 7, 2009 at Hohenwald Church of Christ. David Kersey, Artie Collins and Mark McDonald officiated with McDonald Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial followed in the Jimmy Cothran’s Family Cemetery.  In addition to his wife, Mr. Layne is survived by his parents, Robert (Bob) Layne and Alishia Carol McGuyer Layne of Gurley, Alama; daughter, Alishia Fayth Layne of Hohenwald; one sister, Alishia Michelle Isbell of Killen, Alabama; and grandmother, Frances Layne of Gurley, Alabama.  A trust fund has been set up at Regions Bank for his daughter, Fayth.

Ferrell Deason “Dee” Loveless, 91, passed away peacefully at his home on Danbury Drive in Columbia November 7, 2009 following a brief illness. During the last weeks of his life, he was surrounded by numerous family members and friends who loved and cherished him.   Deason was a retired electrician from Monsanto Company and a well known and highly respected sports official. He was known for singing to the ladies and making dollar bill rings for servers at restaurants.  Funeral services were conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Graymere Church of Christ in Columbia where he and his wife of 63 years, Oneita, were charter members. Officiating were John Vaughan, Wendell Robinson, and Kirk Brothers. Burial followed in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors assisted the family with arrangements.  The family requests to honor “Dee’s” memory, that you give to help someone else. Born March 24, 1918 in Lewis County, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Mavis Poore Loveless and W. H. Loveless. He was a 1936 graduate of Lewis County High School where he excelled in basketball, football, and American Legion baseball. He was the football captain and quarterback the year he was a senior (1935-36). During the three years he played, this football team lost one game, tied two, and won all the others. No opponent scored on them in the ’35 season.  Sports always has been a part of Deason’s life. He played semi-pro baseball for the Chattanooga Lookouts and pro-ball two years with Thomasville, Georgia in 1940 and Selma, Alabama in 1941.  He went into the United States Army on January 14, 1942 and served in the cavalry in the Southwest Pacific. He was wounded at New Britain on January 4, 1944 and received the Purple Heart. His aspirations of playing professional baseball ended when he was wounded in the arm and neck during the war. While working with Monsanto, he had a 12 year baseball career with the nationally known semi-pro Monsanto Maulers. He served as manager of this team in 1953 and 1954.  For 42 years Deason was a member of the TSSAA, having been a charter member of this organization. Before the TSSAA was created he was a member of the Tennessee Approved Official’s Conference, the forerunner of TSSAA. He officiated football for 42 years and basketball for 20 years and 9 years officiated baseball and softball as well as working Pop Warner games. He was once described as one of the most experienced officials in the state, and noted as the “dean of TSSAA Football officials in the midstate.” Numerous officials have been trained by him through the years.  He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Old Timer’s Baseball Association in Nashville, as Prep Official of the Year by the Quarterback Club of Lawrenceburg, and was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. In later years he was a member of the Senior Tennessee Golf Association and participated in the Senior Olympics. He played golf with the “Seniors” as well as worked out at the YMCA until October of this year.  Deason served as a deacon at Graymere Church of Christ for 29 years and a Sunday school teacher. He also enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels to shut-ins from the church and giving away produce from his garden. For many years he was a volunteer at Columbia Academy and believed in donating blood to the Red Cross. He is a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19, VFW, and Disabled Veterans of America. 
     He is survived by the love of his life for 63 years, Oneita Graves Loveless, whom he married May 4, 1946. He is the father of Terri (Jim) Baker and Larry (Gail) Loveless, all of Columbia. Grandchildren are Beth (Matt) Bogosian of Nashville, Jeff (Kelley) Loveless, Jake Loveless, Lajuana Baker, and Mark (Michelle) Baker all of Columbia. Great-grandchildren are: Olivia Anne Loveless, Lillie Kathryn Baker, and Kaelyn Wilson. He is also survived by a brother, Johnny (Judy) Loveless and a sister, Ann (Guy) Rochelle, all of Nashville, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Eddie and Dottie Baker of Columbia, Dick and Faye Willis of Anderson, SC, Margorie Graves, Joyce Hinson, Harville Griner, all of Hohenwald, Shirley Graves of Livingston, Elton Graves of Brentwood, Wanda Loveless of Arlington, TX, and Audrey Loveless of Nashville.  All his nieces and nephews were very precious to him, with Lynn (Richard) Walton, Mark (Debbie) Loveless, Ken (Deanna) Loveless and their children being his other set of children and grandchildren.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Claigett Loveless, Bauman Loveless, Springer Loveless, Billy Loveless, Jack Loveless, and sisters, Eloise Carroll, Sannie Odil, and Betty Simpson.  Active pallbearers were Jeff Loveless, Jake Loveless, Mark Baker, Mark Loveless, Ken Loveless, Chad Loveless, Broc Loveless, Greg Baker, and David Walton.  Honorary pallbearers include his special nieces and nephews, Eddie Baker, Buddy Martin, Jim Carrigan, Gerald Martin, Ben White, Jerry Colley, Ramona Smith, Mattie Lee Shannon, elders, deacons, and ministers of Graymere Church of Christ, Monsanto retirees, sports officials he has worked with and/or trained, golfers from the Senior Tennessee Golf Association, and residents of his senior community Wyndam Park.  The family would like to thank his long time doctors, Dr. Steve Simmons, Dr. Craig Ferrell, and Dr. Jon Freels as well as the compassionate caregivers of Caris Hospice and Debra Cathey.

Howard Wilson Crowell, 88, died Monday, October 19, 2009, at Wayne Care Nursing Home in Waynesboro.  Services were held 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at Neal Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg with Ron Jones officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Lawrence County with full military honors.  He was a native of Hohenwald, an army veteran of World War II, was retired from Murray Inc., and was a Methodist.  He was preceded in death by parents Jim and Ollie Pollock Crowell and wife Pauline Lyell Crowell.  Survivors include daughter Juanita Staggs of Waynesboro, son David Crowell of Lawrenceburg, sisters Florence Rameriz and Roxie Davis of Hohenwald, brother Boyce Crowell of Batesville, Mississippi; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Willie Paul Layton, 64, died October 29, 2009 at his residence in Waynesboro.  Graveside service was held November 2, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the Swiss Cemetery with L. B. Bromley officiating.  Mr. Layton was born June 14, 1945 in Tampa, Florida to the late George W. Layton and Clara Shepherd Layton. He was an employee of Mulberry Phosphorus Mines.  Survivors include one son Tracy Layton of Lakeland, Florida; two daughters, Tammy Westfall and Heather McCarter, also of Lakeland, Florida; one brother, Don Layton of Highland City, Florida; three sisters, Bonnie Craig of Waynesboro, Wynell Alderman of Mulberry, Florida, and Vondeen Kiger of Stanleyville, North Carolina; and five grandchildren.

Oklie Eloid “Cot” Brock, age 82, of Summertown died Monday, October 26, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center.  Mr. Brock was a native of Lawrence County, retired from Stauffer Chemical Company after 43 years and was a member of the AFL-CIO Local 912. He was an usher and member of the Panoramic Full Gospel Church.  Funeral services will be conducted today, Thursday, October 29, 2009, 1:00 p.m. at the Panoramic Full Gospel Church with Jimmy Turnbow officiating. Interment will follow at Napier Cemetery in Lewis County. Neal Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg was in charge of arrangements.  He is survived by his wife, Lillian Allene Wix Brock of Summertown; one daughter, Rhonda Gail Spears and husband, Everett of Summertown; two sons, Tony Loid Brock and wife, Ruth, of Summertown, Christopher Lynn Brock and wife, Kathy, of Williamsport; three sisters, Vera Corter and husband, Bob, of Lavergne, Lillian Patterson of Ethridge, Inez Brown and husband, Bennie, of Summertown; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, and five step-great grandchildren.  Mr. Brock was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Wesley Brock and Tennessee Wilson Staggs Brock, two sisters, Lavada (Walter) Ray, and Edna May (Lawrence) Jackson; three brothers, Ivan (Alma) Brock, Nolan (Evagene) Brock, and Eugene Brock; one brother-in-law, Joy Patterson

Nancy Pace O’Guin Durham, a lifelong resident of Hickman County, died October 20 in Hohenwald following a lengthy illness. She was 88. Born in the Cane Creek community on January 29, 1921, Mrs. Durham was a beloved member of the Centerville Church of Christ where she and her late husband, Jack, served tirelessly in the church bus and Outreach Center ministries.  As a young lady during World War II, Nancy worked in Willow Run, Michigan where she helped build and inspect B-24 bombers, and in Milan, Tennessee at the shell-loading plant. In later years, she was associated with the Huddleston Insurance Agency from which she retired in 1985.  Mrs. Durham is preceded in death by her late husband of 47 years, Jack H. Durham, and first husband, Brown Wiley O’Guin, who died in 1957.  She is survived by brother Ernest Pace of Hohenwald, son John Durham and wife Marcille of Brentwood, and granddaughters Meredith Durham of Corvallis, Oregon and Allison Durham of Nashville.  She is also preceded in death by parents John and Viola Pace, brothers Garland, Sam, Homer, Milton, Searcy, Pleasant, Glenn, Jack, Elvis and Chessor Pace and sister Lemma Pace Baker.  The family is grateful for the abundant kindness shown to Mrs. Durham by dear friends Celia Yates, Ruth Staggs, and Owen and Priscilla Barber as well as nieces Becky Whitehead, Linda Craft and Faye Grover, caregiver Melodie Rushton and the staff of Lewis County Manor.  Visitation for Nancy Durham was Tuesday, October 27 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the McDonald Funeral Home in Centerville.  A funeral service was scheduled Wednesday at 11:00 with burial immediately following at Chessor Cemetery. Beloved nephews and friends Don Baker, Harvey Craft, Danny Pace, Roger Pace, Jerry Shepard and Harold Whitehead served as pallbearers. Bryan McAllister, Minister of Centerville Church of Christ officiated.  Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Missions Fund at Centerville Church of Christ, 138 North Central Avenue, Centerville, TN 37033.

Hilda Jean Quillen     Funeral services for Hilda Jean Quillen, age 77, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2009 in the chapel of McDonald Funeral Home in Centerville with Horace Farr officiating. Interment was in Banks Cemetery in Hickman County. Mrs. Quillen died Friday, October 23 at Hickman Community Hospital.   She was born April 23, 1932 in Centerville to the late Johnny and Ima Jean Woods Weatherspoon.  Mrs. Quillen was a member of Brushy Church of Christ and a retired employee of Henry I. Seigel. She is survived by her husband, J. B. Quillen; son, Greg Quillen; and daughter, Gwen Rogers, all of Centerville; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and three sisters, Wanda McFarlin of Centerville, Beth Johns of Columbia, and Gail Quillen of Southgate, Michigan.

Mary Jo Underwood Birdwell, age 75, of Nashville, passed away October 25, 2009.   Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 27, 11 a.m., at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home in Franklin. Calvin Parker officiated.  Mrs. Birdwell was born July 19, 1934 in Lewis County. She was the daughter of he late Charlotte Hinson Mitchell and Claude Mitchell, formerly of Hohenwald.  Mrs. Birdwell was retired from Metro Department of Education where she taught special education at Gower, Cockrill, Harpeth Valley Elementary and Bellevue Middle School. She opened her home up to over 20 homeless and abused children, caring for them as her own. She taught many Sunday school classes at Parkwood, West End and Bellevue Church of Christ.  She is survived by two sons, Jack Gary (Lee Ann) Underwood, Michael Gregory (Melese) Underwood of Franklin; grandchildren, Rachel, Alex, Nicholas, and Alyessa Underwood; aunt, Joanne Hinson Hyatt of Hohenwald, and uncle, Charles Cuthbert Hinson of Columbia.

Kenneth Ray Turnbow, age 68, died October 27, 2009 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.   Mr. Turnbow was born September 27, 1941 to the late Thomas Turnbow, Jr. and Bulah Staggs Turnbow. He was employed by Lewis County Government for many years, serving as County Clerk and County Mayor.  Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 31, 2009, 1:00 p.m., at Blondy Church of God. Interment will take place in the Lewis County Memorial Gardens. McDonald Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  Survivors are his wife, Sue Turnbow, son Duke Turnbow, both of Hohenwald, daughter Duchess Starbuck of Linden; three sisters, Barbara Clayton and Glenda Harris, both of Hohenwald, and Leah Graves of Hampshire; one grandson, Chase Parker, and one granddaughter, Skye Parker, both of Hohenwald.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Turnbow was preceded in death by a sister, Patsy Turnbow.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to McDonald Funeral Home on behalf of the Lewis County Cancer Victims Fund or One by One Ministries, Inc. to aid children in India and Africa.

Adlene Poore, 84, died October 17, 2009 at Briarcliff Health Care Center in Oak Ridge. Graveside service was held October 19 at 1:00 p.m. in the Lewis County Memorial Gardens. Richard Tate officiated with McDonald Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.  Mrs. Poore, a retired employee of Genesco, was the wife of the late William Ellis Poore. She was born July 31, 1925 in Harvest, Alabama to the late Johnnie and Lula (Lewter) Hodges.    Survivors include a daughter Kay (Greg) Hamilton of Oak Ridge; two sisters, Merle Basman of Hendersonville, North Carolina, and Beulah Mae Bookout of Birmingham, Alabama; a sister-in-law, Anita Hodges of Louisville, Kentucky; one granddaughter, Leslie Hamilton of Oak Ridge; and one grandson, Alan Hamilton, also of Oak Ridge.  In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Poore was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Laurie Hamilton.
 
Lawrence Edward Nine, 75, died October 15, 2009 at his home in Hohenwald.  Services were held October 17, 1:00 p.m., at McDonald Funeral Home with Clinton Williams officiating. Burial followed in Lewis County Memorial Gardens.  A son of the late Daniel Edward Nine and Sarah Alma (Stemple) Nine, he was born July 22, 1934 in West Virginia.  Survivors include one son, two daughters, Alma (Tony) Cogdill of Hohenwald, Marlene (Tom) Landini of Taylor, Michigan; one step-son, Tom (Vilma) Smathers of Riverview, Michigan; six granddaughters, Jennifer Rose Cogdill and Victoria (Jason) Cogdill Zimmermann, both of Hohenwald, Danielle Nine, Nicole Landini, and Kelly Landini, of Taylor, Michigan, and April Smathers of Riverview, Michigan; two grandsons, Tommy Landini of Taylor, Michigan and Christopher Smathers of Riverview, Michigan; two great grandsons, Taylor Ray Zimmermann of Hohenwald and Trever Taylor of Riverview, Michigan

James “Jimmy” Henry Simmons.   A graveside service was held Friday, October 16, 2009, 4:30 p.m., for James “Jimmy” Henry Simmons.  Mr. Simmons died October 15 at Lewis County Manor. He was 72 years old.  Interment took place in the Lewis County Memorial Gardens with Darrell Duncan officiating. McDonald Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  A son of the late William Otto and Nancy (Rone) Simmons, he was born May 10, 1937 in Henryville.  Survivors include a brother, Michael (Mary) Simmons of Hohenwald; one niece, Ronda (Gary) Turner of Savannah; one nephew, Randal (Tammy) Simmons of Hohenwald; three nieces, Shay Turner and Shasta Turner of Savannah, Gracie Simmons of Hohenwald; one nephew, Gatlyn Simmons also of Hohenwald.

George Wayne Gatlin     A Celebration of Life service was held Friday, October 9, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. for George Wayne Gatlin, age 66, of the Lakewood Park Community in Beech Grove. The service was held at Doak-Howell Funeral Home.   Mr. Gatlin died Wednesday, October 7, at the Centennial Medical Center in Nashville after a short illness. Per his request, he was cremated.  A native of Polk County, Florida, born November 27, 1942, he was the son of the late George Gatlin and Lula Whittington Gatlin. He was a long-haul truck driver and was of the Baptist faith.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Denise Colon Gatlin.  Survivors are: six daughters, Teresa Peek of Beech Grove, Rachael Hernandez and Angela Strickland, both of Lakeland, Florida, Donna Kay Craig and husband Johnny of Hohenwald, Amanda Sue Gatlin of Auburndale, Florida, Patricia Yorkston of Winterhaven, Florida; four sons, John Stanley of Massachusetts, Timothy Gatlin of Florida, Donald Gatlin and Greg Gatlin, both of Winterhaven, Florida.

Jeanette Quillen, 68, died Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Lewis County Manor.  Funeral services were held October 11, 2:00 p.m., at McDonald Funeral Home with Tom Eddins officiating. Interment followed in the Milan Cemetery in Hickman County.  Daughter of the late James Thurston Fite and Bertha (Bresbois) Fite, Mrs. Quillen was a laborer for DC Apparel. She was born November 21, 1940.  Survivors include a companion, Ray McIntear of Hohenwald, and niece, Sherry Zebarah Zelek of Cary, North Carolina.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Quillen, sisters, Wilma Ruth Zebarah and Mattie Joyce Bastin, brother, Danny Douglas Fite, and nephew, Danny Peter Zebarah.

Carolyn Susan Lowe     Graveside service was held Monday, October 12, 2009, 11 a.m., in the Dabbs Cemetery for Carolyn Susan Lowe of Paris. Richard Tate officiated with McDonald Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.  Mrs. Lowe, 66, died October 10 at Oak Manor Nursing Home in McKenzie.  A daughter of the late Jimmy Lowe and Imogene (Craver) Clay, she was born October 18, 1942 in Kenova, West Virginia.  Survivors include an aunt and uncle, Charles and June Craver of Paris.  She was preceded in death by her parents and step-father, Elvis Clay.

Kenneth Bryan Lane, 85, of Crestwood, Kentucky, died Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at Friendship Manor Nursing Home.  Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Friday, October 9 at Stoess Funeral Home in Crestwood, Kentucky. Burial was at Portland Memorial Gardens in Portland.  Mr. Lane was a distinguished Army veteran of World War II, having earned five bronze campaigne stars, including the Normandy Invasion Campaign. He was the General Chairman of B.R.A.C., and a deacon of Ballardsville Baptist Church.  He is survived by his wife, Winnie Johnson Lane; three sons, Bryan Lane (Julia) of Hohenwald, David Lane (Jan), and Danny Lane (Sharon), both of Louisville, Kentucky; daughter, Ellen Lane Lawson (Jackie) of Columbia; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Lorena Ruth Lawrence Harrod, 75, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, died Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Hospice Center of Southern, Kentucky.  Funeral services were held Monday, October 5 at the J. C. Kirby and Son Broadway Chapel. Burial was in Bowling Green Gardens.  Mrs. Harrod, a retired restaurant manager, was born October 10, 1933 in Bowling Green. She was the daughter of the late Harry Elvin and Lidda Bell Smith Lawrence.  She attended Madison Avenue General Baptist Church. She loved life to its fullest. She loved to play the piano and gospel music was her passion. She would do anything for anyone. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.  Survivors include two daughters, Anna Roll and former husband, Thomas Roll, Irene Garbacz and husband Ted, both of Bowling Green; son, Roy Steven Waters and wife Diane of Bowling Green; four sisters, Estelle Mercer of Hohenwald, Mickey Poteet and husband Edd, Ina Christy and husband Gene, and Suzie Burton, all of Bowling Green; two brothers, Fred Lawrence and wife Charlotte of House Springs, Missouri, and Maxwell Briggs Lawrence and wife Faye of Bowling Green; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Steven Dale Tinsley and Virginia Dare Morris, and sister Flo Wilcox and her husband Calvin Wilcox.

Wilson Sharpe     Funeral service for Wilson Sharpe was held October 3, 2009, 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. Drew Brewer and Chip Hunter officiated with McDonald Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial followed in Swiss Cemetery.  He was a prominent Lewis County business owner for approximately 31 years, owning and operating Sharpe’s Service Center.  Mr. Sharpe, age 86, died September 30, 2009 at Hidden Acres Health Care in Mount Pleasant. He was born May 10, 1923 in Wayne County to the late Crowell S. Sharpe and Pauline Curry Sharpe.  He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Robnett Sharpe; son David (Sharon) Sharpe of Lawrenceburg; daughter Nancy (Dan) Strawbridge of Atlanta, Georgia; and four grandchildren.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Sharpe was preceded in death by two sisters, Eloise Sharpe and Lila Turnbow.

Della Olivia Groom, 92, passed away September 28, 2009, at her home. Funeral services were held October 1, 2009 at Young Funeral Home in Perry County with Carolyn Parnell officiating. Interment followed in the Swiss Cemetery.  Mrs. Groom was born April 2, 1917 to the late Albert Arnold Moore and Julie Edna Moore. She was a retired machine operator for Henry I. Seigel. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Groom; son, Nelson Joe Groom; sisters, Mary Hazel Carter and Ella Izzle Kimble; brothers, John Wilburn Moore and Arnold Oneil Moore.  Survivors include her daughter, Carol (Roger) Barber of Hohenwald; sister Julia Irene Pipkins of Trenton; daughter-in-law Faith Groom of Virginia; grandsons, Nelson Joe Groom, Jr., Jason Barber, and Justin Barber; granddaughters, Kelly (Scott) Dunmire, Sharon Groom and Della Runions; great grandchildren, Natalia Runions, Margaret Runions, Kaitlyn Runions and Alexandra Runions.

Linda Ruth Griner, of 104 Parkwood Lane, died October 4, 2009 at Perry Community Hospital in Linden. She was 58.  A teacher at Maury County Schools, Mrs. Griner was born December 16, 1950 in Gallatin. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Alyne Wheeler.  Funeral service was held October 6, 2009, 1:00 p.m. at McDonald Funeral Home with Steve Reeves officiating. Interment was in Downey Cemetery.  Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Griner of Hohenwald; daughter Jacy (David) White of Clarksville; grand daughter, Bailey White of Clarksville; two cousins, Margaret Templeton of Hohenwald and Gary Templeton of Dallas, Georgia.

Tony Robert “Bones” Hand, of West Nashville, died September 25, 2009. Mr. Hand was 57 years old.   A family graveside service took place at Hand-Thompson Cemetery in Ashland City.  He is survived by two daughters, Krista Hand Bailey of Hohenwald, and Doesha Hand of Portland; two sons, Tony Hand and Jesse Hand both of Portland; two brothers, Charles Hand and Jimmy Hand of Nashville; and seven grandchildren.  Mr. Hand is preceded in death by grandson, Noah Bailey.

Charles Raymond McCalip     Funeral service for Charles Raymond McCalip was held September 28, 2009 at 11 a.m. Mike Nolen officiated with burial in Swiss Cemetery.   Mr. McCalip, age 58, died at his home September 24, 2009. A son of the late Raymond Henry McCalip and Lacigale Mayfield McCalip, he was born December 29, 1950 in Owosso, Michigan.  Mr. McCalip was employed with Sloan Ford as a Warranty Claims Administrator. He was married to Lavonne Reed McCalip.  Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one son, Michael McCalip of Springhill; two daughters, Heather Keeton and Mindy Dillon, both of Hohenwald; three sisters, LaVaughn Lester of Filmore, Indiana, Carolyn Peterson of Hutchinson, Kansas, and Goldie Bray of Cincinnati, Ohio; and four grandchildren.

Lula Mae Burns     Graveside service for Lula Mae Burns, age 84, was held at 2:00 p.m. September 29, 2009. Mrs. Burns died at her residence at 143 Tabor Place in Hohenwald on September 26, 2009.    Born June 15, 1925 in Hickman County, she was a daughter of the late Frank Boyd Quillen and Ola Mae Grimes Quillen. Mrs. Burns was employed many years as Librarian for Lewis County Schools.  Burial took place in Swiss Cemetery with Jerry Durham and L. C. Loveless officiating. McDonald Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  Survivors include one daughter, Jolene Burns Averette of Hohenwald, one brother, Thomas Quillen of Lander, Wyoming and one granddaughter, Allyson Averette of Hohenwald.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Burns is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Neely Burns, and brother, James Quillen.

Betty (Talbert) Hinson passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at Porter Hospital, Valparaiso, Indiana. Betty was born December 13, 1952 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. On March 18, 1972, she married the love of her life, Charles Hinson Sr.  She was preceded in death by her parents Ervin M. Talbert Sr. and Billie S. Talbert, her brother Tom Talbert and father-in-law John D. Hinson.  She is survived by her husband, Charles Sr., son Charles Hinson Jr., both of Hobart, Indiana and faithful dog Moon, sisters, Sandra (Terry) Byrd of Knox, Indiana, Lisa (John) Morey of Portage, Indiana, Juanita (Julio) Cruz, Shirley (Wayne Roberts) Pedalino and Frances Keller of Kenner, Lousiana, brothers, Mitch (Lori) Talbert of Portage, Indiana, and Shawn (Miranda) Talbert of Delphi, Indiana, mother-in-law Virginia Hinson of Hohenwald, sisters-in-law Cherry (Armand) Boltovitz of Hobart, Indiana, Pam Hinson of Hohenwald, and brother-in-law Christopher (Carrie) Hinson of Hohenwald, and many nieces and nephews.  Betty’s wishes were that she be cremated and no funeral services. A celebration of Betty’s life was held on September 26, 2009.   Arrangements were under the directions of White-Love Funeral Home in Chesterton, Indiana.

Iva Jean Whitwell Birchett, age 81, died September 22, 2009, at her residence in Cedar Grove.  Funeral service was held September 26, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. with Charles Grishom officiating. Burial took place in Swiss Cemetery with McDonald Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.  The daughter of the late Henry and Lydia (Casteel) Hardin, Mrs. Birchett was born September 2, 1928 in Hardin County.  Survivors include her husband, Joseph Dalton Birchett of Cedar Grove; three sons, Dan Prater of Cedar Grove, Mike Whitwell and Tim (Vicki) Whitwell, both of Hohenwald, Jeff (Stephanie) Whitwell of Cedar Grove; three step-sons Wendell Birchett and Barry Birchett, both of Cedar Grove, and Brent Birchett of Washington; three step-daughters, Donna Birchett and Patty Birchett, both of Lexington, and Angie Birchett, of Hohenwald; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Birchett was preceded in death by her first husband, Alton “Pete” Whitwell.

Marie Pennington Drake, age 88, died September 26, 2009 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. A daughter of the late Grady Walker Whitwell and Bessie Holt Whitwell, she was born April 16, 1921 in Perry County.   Mrs. Drake was employed several years as a Dietician for Lewis County Schools.  The funeral service was held September 29, 2009, 11 a.m., at McDonald Funeral Home with Drew Brewer and Van Ward officiating. Burial followed in the Napier Cemetery.  Mrs. Drake is survived by two daughters, Alice Pennington of Memphis, and Valerie Pennington of Chester, Georgia; three sisters, Juanita Schwendimann of Hohenwald, Pat Lentz of Columbia, and Mildred Walker of Havanna, Florida; son-in-law Craig Newton of Chester, Georgia; granddaughter Alaina Roberts of Memphis.

Lee Eldon Hinson, age 95, died September 16, 2009 at Lewis County Manor in Hohenwald. Funeral services were held September 20, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home with Leon Mauldon and Richard Tate officiating. Burial followed in the Hinson Goodman Cemetery.   Mr. Hinson, a son of the late John Thomas and Bertha Talley Hinson, was born June 5, 1914 in Texas. He was an electrician for Inland Steel and was married to the late Della Hinson.  Survivors include a son, Joe (Dawn) Hinson of Frederick, Maryland; a daughter, Donna (Ray) Ross of Highland, Indiana; a brother, Buddy Hinson of Hohenwald; a sister, Carlene Davis of Hohenwald; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Jeffery “10-4” Dwight Edwards     Funeral service was held September 22, 11 a.m., for Jeffery “10-4” Dwight Edwards, age 48, who died as a result of a vehicular homocide on September 19.   Jerry McDonald officiated with burial in the Hinson Cemetery located in Perry County. McDonald Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  Mr. Edwards, a son of the late Wayne Edwards and Agnes Hinson Roder, was born May 3, 1961 in Perry County.  Survivors include one brother, Johnny Hinson, and a sister, Kay Barnes, both of Hohenwald; two special friends, Mary Lou Jordan and Lynn Pope, also of Hohenwald.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by his step-father, Kenneth Hinson. 

Roger Washington Bouldin, passed away at his home of 51 years on Thursday, September 17, 2009. He was 92. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, September 21, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Drew Brewer and Mike Spitzer officiating. Burial followed in the Graves Cemetery.   Dr. Bouldin was a graduate of the University of Tennessee Dental School. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Panama Canal Zone from 1941-1945 rising to the rank of Major in the Dental Corps. Dr. Bouldin started private practice in Hohenwald in 1945, where he remained until retirement. He was a member of the United Methodist Church for 85 years, American Legion Post 127, VFW and the Masons. He was active in the sixth district dental society. He served as chairman on the Tennessee State Game and Fish Commission for 12 years, served on the Lewis County Library Board and was a founding member of the Lewis County Historical Society. He was appointed Aide deCamp for Governor Frank Clement Staff, received the Lewis County Legend Award and the Civic Heritage Award. Dr. Bouldin also received the Fellowship Award for Distinguished Service from the Tennessee Dental Association.  Survivors include his wife, Sue Marbet Bouldin of Hohenwald; daughter, Elizabeth “Betty” Gai (Bouldin) Payor of Hohenwald; stepson, Bill Marbet of Columbia; step-daughter, Lynn Tate of Lobelville; grandsons, Louis George Payor III and Jason Bouldin Payor, both of Winter Park, Florida, Jacob and Lee Marbet and Dan McEwen, all of Columbia, and John McEwen of Lobelville; and seven great-grandchildren.  Dr. Bouldin was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Gaither and Floy Hopkins Bouldin of Dickson and a sister Wilmont Lander.

Vivian Ruth Brown, age 79, died September 20 at her home on Chandler Drive.   Funeral service was held today, Thursday, September 24, 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Mike Nolen officiating.  Mrs. Brown, daughter of the late Michael and Christina Kerr Trefero, was born October 28, 1929 in Barnesboro, Pennsylvania. The wife of Ronald Brown, she was employed as a secretary with Bartlett Chevrolet.  Survivors in addition to her husband are a daughter Linda (George) Paulisin of Crossville; step-son Larry Brown of West Palm Beach, Florida; step-daughter, Bonnie (Larry) Issley, also of West Palm Beach; two brothers, Francis Trefero of St. Maries, Idaho, Richard (Susan) Trefero of Egg Harbor, New Jersey; three sisters, Dorothy (Edward) Zavatchan and Janet Trefero, both of Cleveland, Ohio, Joyce Ciolorito of Egg Harbor, New Jersey; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Ruth McFall, age 69, died September 18, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Graveside services were held September 19, 2009 in the Lewis County Memorial Gardens with Paul Inman officiating.   Mrs. McFall, a daughter of the late Jones and Lula Flippo Hensley, was born July 27, 1940 in Hohenwald. She was a homemaker.  Survivors include two sons, Brian Napier and Bill Corture, both of Hohenwald; four daughters, Melissa Quillen, Glenda Pitts, Carol Bradley and Becky Vandusen, all of Hohenwald; two brothers, Leslie Hensley and Billy Joe Hensley, both of Hohenwald; two sisters, Pearl Uno and Susie Sims, both of Hohenwald; ten grandchildren, Nickie Quillen, Austin Pitts, Dakota Stephens, Leighton Stephens, Zach Vandusen, Tony Vandusen, Heather Lee and Allie Vandusen, all of Hohenwald, Crystal Odom of Japan and Crystal Vandusen of Erie, Pennsylvania; and three great-grandchildren, Landon Odom of Japan, Jadin Couture of Hohenwald and Jayden Drayer of Erie, Pennsylvania.

Daniel Patrick Fuchs, age 49, died September 19, 2009, at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. He is the son of the late Alfred and Elizabeth Fuchs. Mr. Fuchs was born March 7, 1960 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He was a musician, a longtime EMT and later a Nurses Aide at the Lewis County Manor. Mr. Fuchs was also a Sargent in the United States Army. Survivors include a brother, Walter Fuchs of Stewartsville, New Jersey, a sister Teresa Roseman of Hohenwald and four nieces, Nicole Roseman and Melody Bruno, both of Hohenwald, and Elizabeth and Megan Fuchs of Smartsville, New Jersey. In addition to his parents Mr Fuchs was preceded in death by a brother, Timothy Fuchs.

Mary Corilla Bumgarner, age 75, died September 12, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Funeral services were held September 15, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with Rex Reed officiating. Burial followed in the Lewis County Memorial Gardens.   Mrs. Bumgarner, a daughter of the late Miles Carr and Connie Mae Winkler Alexander, was born April 8, 1934 in Hickory, North Carolina. She was a homemaker.  Survivors include two sons, James Corey Bumgarner of Hohenwald and James Colin Bumgarner of Pulaski; five daughters, Scarlet Lee Bumgarner, Sandra R. Parlier and Shannon Miller, all of Hohenwald, Sheila Elaine Pharis of Lakeland, Florida and Robin R. Alexander of Tallahassee, Florida; 23 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bumgarner was preceded in death by two brothers, Elbert and Aaron Alexander, two sisters, Naomi Cook and Mariam Meromey and a grandson, Daniel Ray Pharis. 

Jesse Elvin Cotham, age 88, of Portland, TN, died Monday, August 31, 2009. John Andrew Holloway, age 78, died September 12, 2009 at Perry Community Hospital in Linden. Graveside services were held September 15, 2009 in the Kittrell Cemetery in Hampshire with Jamie English Sr.   Mr. Holloway, a son of the late Andy and Ruth Sims Holloway, was born September 22, 1930 in Hohenwald. He was a laborer at Woodall Excavating and Grading.   Survivors include three sons, Mike Holloway of Moultrie, Georgia, Eddie Holloway of Ashland City and Eric Calvin of Hohenwald; two daughters, Debbie Devore of Hohenwald and Brenda Crossland of Arkansas; two sisters, Florene Holloway and Annette Calvin, both of Hohenwald; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Martha Jo Scott, age 64, died September 11, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Funeral services were held September 13, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with Art McComick officiating. Burial followed in the Downey Cemetery.  Mrs. Scott was born September 10, 1945 in Mary County, a daughter of the late H. F. and Ruthie Lee Runions York. She was a property manager with Arvin Properties and was married to the late Robert Scott Sr.  Survivors include two sons, Robert (Donice) Scott Jr. and Dave (Brannon) Brooks Scott, all of Lexington; four brothers, Freddy Earl York and William Ernest York, both of Scottsville, Kentucky and Tony Ray York and Bobby Dale York, both of Hohenwald; four sisters, Ellen June Bell, Jackie Marie Barber and Sandra Gail Moon, all of Hohenwald and Margie Louise Ray of Grand Prarie, Texas; three grandsons, Alexander Scott, Devion Hager and Christopher Hager, all of Lexington, Kentukcy; and two granddaughters, Jessica Scott and Marissa Hager, both of Lexington, Kentucky;   In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Lee York.

Frances Barrow, 88, died September 1, 2009 at Brunswick Community Hospital in Supply, North Carolina. Funeral services were held September 5, 2009 at First United Methodist Church with Drew Brewer officiating. Burial followed in the Lewis County Memorial Gardens.  Mrs. Barrow, a daughter of the late E. Ray Lumm and Sarah Albright Lumm, was born October 26, 1920 in Memphis. She was a homemaker and was married to the late Curtis Barrow.   Survivors include two daughters, Mary Louise Barrow-Gossett of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and Patricia Leete of Shallotte, North Carolina; four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

John Thomas “J.T.” Barber, 88, of Centerville, died August 4, 2009 at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. Funeral services were held August 7, 2009 at the Centerville Church of Christ with Bryan McAlister, Matthew Dotson, Jerrie Barber and Jerri Wayne Barber II officiating. Burial followed in the Charles L. Nickell Memorial Park in Centerville. McDonald Funeral Home of Centerville was in charge of arrangements.   Mr. Barber was a native of Lobelville and the son of Omar and Nannie Weatherspoon Barber. He was a member of the Centerville Church of Christ.   Survivors include his wife, Annette Duncan Barber of Centerville; son, Jerrie W. Barber of Nashville; five sisters, Annie Lee Whitwell, Clara French and Ester Johnston, all of Centerville, Sue Jones of Lewisburg and Lucille Reeves of Hohenwald; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Thelma Louise Walker, age 90, died August 20, 2009 at Life Care in Centerville. Funeral services were held August 22, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with Van Ward officiating. Burial followed in the Lawrence County Memorial Gardens in Lawrenceburg.   Mrs. Walker was born April 20, 1919 in Lawrence County, a daughter of the late John Shubel and Marietta Staggs Hoffman. She was a cashier at Hyatt Regency.

Herbert W. Zarle, 68, died August 19, 2009 after his battle with cancer.   He is survived by his mother, Rosemary Zarle of Orlando FL; one sister, Diane (John) Webb of Savannah; two brothers, Pat (Anne) Zarle of Hohenwald, Mike (Sheila) Zarle of Orlando, FL; three daughters, Dawn (Wayne) Morton of Columbia, Kelly (James) Armstrong of Spring Hill and Kim (Allen) Stewart of Hohenwald; one son, Mark (Sherry) Zarle of Columbia; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Cheryl Ann Hill, 53, died August 18, 2009 at her residence in Hohenwald. A memorial service was held Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the United Methodist Church with Drew Brewer officiating. McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald was in charge of the arrangements.   Mrs. Hill, a daughter of the late Rolland and Earleene Isabell Young Clock, was born May 7, 1956 in Monroe County, Michigan. She worked in customer service at Dollar General Store.

Ozella Hensley Foley, age 88, of Wyandotte, Michigan, died Monday, August 10, 2009 after a long illness. A celebration of her life was held on Thursday, August 13, 2009.   Mrs. Foley was born in Hohenwald in 1921, a daughter of the late Lula Flippo and Jones Hensley. She collected antiques and was a business woman in Wyandotte, Michigan for many years, retiring at the age of 82.   Survivors include two daughters, Norma Creamer (Arthur) Roden and Juanita (Paul) Scafuri; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three sisters, Pearl Uno, Susie Sims and Mary Ruth McFall and two brothers, Leslie Hensley and Billy Hensley, all of Hohenwald;   In addition to her parents, Mrs. Foley was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert, Bernice and Eugene Hensley.

John D. Leary, 81, died at Maury Regional Hospital oncology department on August 5, 2009 of acute myeloid leukemia. By his wishes, his body was donated to Vanderbilt Medical Center for study.   Survivors include his wife, Margaret Leary; a daughter, Judi Steele of West Virginia; a brother, Bill Leary, of West Virginia; a niece and nephew of West Virginia; five step children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Travis and Ernie McKissack.

Myrtle Louise Williams, 88, died August 6, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Funeral services were held August 8, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home with Malcom George and Davis Salisbury officiating. Burial followed in the Lomax Crossroads Cemetery in Hohenwald.  Mrs. Williams, a daughter of the late Jim and Callie Hinson, was born July 30, 1921 in Lewis County. She was a machine operator at H.I.S. and was married to the late Jack Harold Williams.

Billy Joe Barber, 69, died August 8, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Funeral services were held August 10, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with Elton Jackson officiating. Burial followed in the Springer Cemetery in Hohenwald.   Mr. Barber, a son of the late Luther and Irene Trull Barber, was born August 18, 1939 in Lewis County. He was a maintenance worker for the City of Hohenwald and was married to the late Jo Nell Qualls Barber.   Survivors include a daughter Debbie (Greg) Kimble, a brother, Ernest Barber, a sister Early Mae Jackson, and a grandson, Jessie Kimble, all of Linden.   In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Barber was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Barber and two sisters, Wilma Barber and Johnnie Ruth Trull.

Johnnie Maye Barber, age 73, died August 6, 2009 at her residence in Hohenwald. Funeral services were held August 9, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with Jack Tharp, Darrell Barber and Marcus Webb officiating. Burial followed in the Lewis County Memorial Gardens.   Mrs. Barber was born February 21, 1936 in Hohenwald, a daughter of the late John Will and Bonnie Lucille Duncan Hankins. She was a cook at McKnight Market and was married to Donald Lee Barber.   In addition to her husband, Mrs. Barber is survived by three sons, Darrell Lee Barber of Lexington and Dennis Wayne Barber and Darren Keith Barber, both of Hohenwald; three daughters, Debbie Durham, Donna Sue Harlow and Dana Jo Barber, all of Hohenwald; two brothers, J. W. Hankins and Randy Hankins of Hohenwald; a sister, Bobbie True of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Lucy Lee Lyell Greer, 78, died August 1, 2009 at Waterford Assisted Living in Bellevue. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Taylor’s Funeral Home in Dickson. Burial followed in the Scotts Cemetery in Kingston Springs.   Mrs. Greer was a native of Lewis County and the daughter of the late Everette and Emma Voorhies Lyell.

Wilma Massey, 77, of Tullahoma, died Sunday, August 2, 2009 in Bedford County from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the Church of Christ at Cedar Lane with Brother Pat Allison and Brother Byron Lawrence officiating. Burial followed in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Tullahoma Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.   Mrs. Massey was a native of Gordonsburg and was the daughter of the late J. K. and Pearl Brown.

Charlotte Brooks Lentz, 64, formerly of Summertown and a resident of Maple Court in Columbia, died Sunday, August 2, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Heritage Funeral Home in Columbia with Everett Campbell officiating. Burial followed in the Polk Memorial Gardens.

Jerry Lee Hanback, age 66, died July 30, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald is in charged of arrangements.  Mr. Hanback was born May 23, 1943 in Hohenwald, a son of the late Joel T. and Clara Mae Anderson Hanback. He was a maintenance supervisor for Off Shore Oil Rig.

Ovie Travis Pennington, 84, of Hampshire, died Thursday, July 30, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held August 3, 2009 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Hampshire with Bishop Ray Pennington officiating. Burial followed in the Greenfield Bend Cemetery.

Ann Guzy, 83, died July 30, 2009 at her residence in Hohenwald. Funeral services were held August 5, 2009 at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Danbury, Connecticut with Luke Mihaly officiating. Burial followed in the St. Platon cemetery in Danbury, Connecticut.   Mrs. Guzy, a daughter of the late George and Mary Sonskij Dirga, was born January 31, 1926 in Granville, New York. She was an electronic assembler at Graphic Sciences and was married to the late Lawrence Guzy.

Geri Lynn Williams Pishner, age 42, of Sheffield Lake, Ohio, died Saturday, July 18, 209 at St. John West Shore Hospital, Westlake, from natural causes. Dovin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, where funeral services were held Thursday, July 23, 2009 with Elder Larry Newsome, pastor of Pleasantview Old Regular Baptist Church, officiating. Burial followed in the Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon, Ohio.

Beverly Jo Mitrano, 62, died July 11, 2009 at her residence in Hohenwald.    B. J. was born and lived most of her life in Brockport, New York. Her varied careers included cook, cowgirl, quality control technician, over-the-road truck driver, bartender, foreman and Irish Wolfhound breeder.  Memorials may be made to cancer research or Hospice Compassus of Columbia.

Ronnie Dale Cagle, 59, died July 24, 2009 at Perry Community Hospital in Linden. Funeral services were held July 26, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home with Glen Floyd officiating. Burial followed in the Downey Cemetery in Hohenwald.   Mr. Cagle was born Junuary 2, 1950 in Hickman County, a son of Mattie Barber Cagle and the late Charles J. Cagle. He was a laborer at Fischer Body.

Monnie Reeves, 87, died July 21, 2009 at her residence in Summertown. Graveside services were held July 24, 2009 in the Barber Family Cemetery with Coy Reeves officiating.   Mrs. Reeves, a daughter of the late Gillespie Wilson and Ozetta Elizabeth Baker Barber, was born August 28, 1921 in Linden. She was a seamstress.

Hector Marquez Ramos, 60, a truck driver and resident of Santa Ana, California, died July 18, 2009. Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 10 a.m. in St. Anne Church in Santa Ana, California. Burial will follow in the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange, California.

Melvin Edward Roberson, 76, died July 9, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Funeral services were held July 12, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohewnald with Johnny Clayton officiating. Burial followed in the Swiss Cemetery in Hohenwald.

Robert Earl Keeton, 56, of Clanton, died Monday, June 29, 2009 at his residence. Funeral services were held Friday, July 3, 2009 at Martin Funeral Home in Clanton, Alabama with burial following in the Union Grove Community Cemetery in Jemsion, Alabama.   Mr. Keeton was born January 20, 1953 in Mobile, Alabama, a son of the late Earl Keeton and the late Mamie Creekmore Keeton. He was a welder and was married to Sherry Keeton of Clanton.

Bernice “Bill” Virginia Dabbs, age 81, died July 11, 2009 at her residence in Hohenwald. Funeral services were held July 12, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home with Jerry Durham and Drew Brewer officiating and special music by Judy Stilwell. Burial followed in the Swiss Cemetery in Hohenwald.

Anna Lee Wright, 68, died July 7, 2009 at her residence in Hohenwald. Graveside services will be held today, Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 11 a.m. with David Deckard officiating in the Whitehead Cemetery in Waynesboro. McDonald Funeral Home of Hohenwald is in charge of the arrangements.  Mrs. Wright, a daughter of the late Jesse James and Edna Lou Riley Whitehead, was born May 21, 1941 in Waynesboro. She was a youth care worker at Natchez Trace Youth Academy.   Survivors include two sons, Tim Wright of Lawrenceburg and Adam Wright of Hohenwald; two daughters, Robin Shirley of Roswell, Georgia and Vickie Wright of Lawrenceburg; two brothers, Paul Whitehead and David Whitehead, both of Hohenwald; a sister, Ruby Nell Skelton of Waynesboro; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.


Elizabeth Deanne Seaton died June 30, 2009 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. Services were held Friday, July 3, 2009 at the Lomax Church of Christ with Chad Loveless and Malcom George officiating. Burial followed at Lomax Crossroads Cemetery.  Ms. Seaton was the daughter of Wayne and Janice Goodman Seaton of Hohenwald, born September 17, 1972 in Centerville. She was a nanny for Dr. Mardon Day.  In addition to her parents, Ms. Seaton is survived by her sisters, Karrie Seaton and Katlin (Dennis) Seaton-Vega, all of Murfreesboro.

Macy Brooke Bastin, age 18, died June 30, 2009 at Wayne Medical Center in Waynesboro from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral services were held July 3, 2009 at Blondy Church of God in Hohenwald with Bill Webb and Marcus Webb officiating. Burial followed in the Lewis County Memorial Gardens.   Ms. Bastin was the daughter of Timothy K. and Sharon Garrison Bastin, born March 6, 1991. She was a waitress at Pizza Hut.

Jimmy C. Monroe. 65, of Decaturville, TN passed away June 23, 2009 at Alive Hospice at St. Thomas in Nashville, TN. Funeral Services were held Friday June 26, 2009, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Ricky and Johnny Monroe officiating. Burial followed in the Dr. O.A. Kirk Memorial Cemetery.

Berniece Anne Lee Mayberry, 89, died June 26, 2009 at Life Care Center of Centerville. Funeral services were held Sunday June 28, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home with Bill McDonald officiating. Burial followed in the Oakmont Cemetery in Centerville.  Mrs. Mayberry was born October 25, 1919 in Hohenwald to the late Jefferson and Josie (Poore) Pollock. She was a Machine Operator for Genesco and was married to the late William T. “Billy” Mayberry, III. Mrs. Mayberry was also a member of the Centerville United Methodist Church.  Survivors include, a granddaughter, Fran Dile of Lyles, a grandson, Jeffrey Mayberry and three great-grandchildren, Seth, Mason and Cody all of Centerville.  In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Mayberry was preceded in death by a son, William T. “Tommy” Mayberry, IV.

Jacqueline Loveless Davis, 94, died June 28, 2009. She was born on November 29, 1914, a daughter of the late Joe C., Sr. and Lula Hardin Loveless. Funeral services were held Wednesday July 1, 2009 at Old Hickory Church of Christ, where Mrs. Davis was a former member, with Bro. Don Loftis, minister of Old Hickory Church of Christ and Bro. James Norton, minister of Old Hickory United Methodist Church officiating. Burial followed in the Davis-Oak grove Cemetery in Hohenwald with Bro. Jack Tharp officiating.

Loyd Wayne Berry, 66, died Monday, June 22, 2009 at his residence in Houlka Mississippi. He was born June 16, 1943, in Greenville Mississippi to Ruben Loyd and Earlene Parker Berry. He was married to Barbara Marsh and made their home in Houlka Mississippi, where he worked as an agronomist. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran.

Bernard Bruce Cotes, age 67, died Saturday, June 20, 2009 at his residence in Hohenwald. A cremation and a memorial service was Sunday, July 5, 2009 in Rockfalls, Illinois at Berean Baptist Church with Reverend Roger Carlson officiating.   Mr. Cotes was a Detroit, Michigan native and a retired factory worker who was residing in Hohenwald.

Billy Ray Simmons, age 67, died June 18, 2009 at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. Funeral services were held June 21, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Centerville with Bill McDonald officiating. Burial followed in the Campground Cemetery in Centerville.  Mr. Simmons was born December 9, 1941 in Duck River, a son of the late William Garfield and Myrtly Riley Simmons. He was a carpenter and was married to the late Patricia Harris Simmons.

Fredda Louise Brewer, 86, died June 19, 2009 at Lewis County Manor. Funeral services were held June 21, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home with Coy Reeves officiating. Burial followed in the Lewis County Memorial Gardens.  Mrs. Brewer, a daughter of the late James Leo and Jeannie Mae Dishongh Roberts, was born April 23, 1923 in Iron City. She was a homemaker and was married to the late Andy Brewer.

Charline Tribble, 65, died June 15, 2009 at her residence in Hohenwald. Funeral services have not been scheduled.   Mrs. Tribble, a daughter of the late Charles and Ima Frost Addlesee, was born February 11, 1944 in Memphis. She was a housewife.

Gary James Thomas Potts, age 60, died June 13, 2009 at NHC Healthcare in Dickson. Graveside services were held June 15, 2009 at Sante Fe Cemetery in Santa Fe with Bob Leech officiating.   Mr. Potts was born August 17, 1948 in Hohenwald, a son of the late Glenn and Martha Churchwell Potts. He was a laborer at Murray Ohio Company.

George Edgar Clark Lopp, 86, died June 12, 2009 at United Regional Medical Center in Manchester. Graveside services were held June 16, 2009 at 1 p.m. in the Downey Cemetery in Hohenwald with Tommy Russell Underwood officiating.  Mr. Lopp, a son of the late Henley McKinley and Daisy Brewer Lopp, was born July 18, 1922 in Lewis County. He was a laborer for Ford Motor Company and was married to Norma Hinson Lopp.

Andy G. Hinson of Kalamazoo passed away June 8, 2009 at his home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 12, 2009 at the Langeland Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel. Burial will follow at the Ft. Custer National Cemetery with military honors.

Landonia “Donia” Fuqua, age 96 of Adairville, Kentucky, died Sunday, June 7, 2009 at Auburn Health Care. Fuernal services were held Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Sanders Funeral Home, Russellville, Kentucky, with Steve McCarley and Gary Varney will officiating. Burial followed in the Townsend Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Dr. Huel Maurice Culbreath, age 84, passed away June 4, 2009, at Life Care Center in Columbia. A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 13, 2009 at First Baptist Church in Hohenwald at 2:30 p.m. Visitation with the family will be before and after the service.

Wanda Elaine Barber, of Nashville, 61, died June 3, 2009 at Alive Hospice at Saint Thomas in Nashville. Graveside services were held June 5, 2009 at Napier Cemetery in Hohenwald with Bobby Carroll officiating.   Ms. Barber, a daughter of the late Jess Manual Sr. and Lallie Jo Pennington Barber, was born March 23, 1948 in Hohenwald.  Survivors include three brothers, Jimmy Ray Barber Sr., David Aaron Barber and John Robert Barber, all of Hohenwald; two sisters, Rebecca Fay Barber of Murfreesboro and Jessica Ruth Roden of Hohenwald; and her caretaker, Vella Davis of Nashville.   In addition to her parents, Ms. Barber was preceded in death by two brothers, William Albert Barber and Jess Manual Barber Jr. and three sisters, Mary Ann Massey, Lois Kathleen Bailey and Martha Jo Davis.

SkeBonnie Hazel Waters, 82, of Linden, died May 27, 2009 at Perry Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Friday, May 29, 2009 in the chapel of Young Funeral Home with Nathan Thomas officiating. Burial followed in the Waters Cemetery.  Mrs. Waters was born in Perry County, December 24, 1926 to the late Charlie Haynes and Ada Carter Haynes. She worked at Hickory Hills in Clifton for 37 years. Survivors include her daughter, Helen Pevahouse, two sons, Junior Walters and Rusty Waters, two brothers, Roy Haynes and Him Tom Haynes, all of Linden; two sisters, Vannie Kilpatrick of Hohenwald and Nellie Jean Hinson of Linden; and four grandchildren.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Waters was preceded in death by her husband William Arnold Waters, two sons, Larry and Johnny Waters, a grandson, James Waters, a sister, Edna Barnes, a brother, Willard Haynes and a son-in-law, Tommy Pevahouse.

John Paul Talley, 73, died May 30, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Funeral services were held June 1, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with Walter Droke officiating. Burial followed in the Swiss Cemetery.   Mr. Talley, a son of the late Elmer and Rosie Harper Talley, was born May 27, 1936 in Pleasantville. She was communications for the U.S. Army and retired from the Army after serving 20 years.  Survivors include his wife, Scherry Breece Talley of Hohenwald; a daugher, Maria (John) Dampf of McEwen; a stepson, Jeramey (Stacy) Harrington of Lebanon; a brother, Elmer Talley of Linden; a sister, Vera Shepard of Centerline, Michigan; and three grandchildren.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Talley was preceded in death by a brother, Willie Clay Talley and a sister Era Shepard.

Lura Mae Skelton, age 94, died May 31, 2009 at Life Care Center in Columbia. Funeral services were held June 2, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with William B. McDonald officiating. Burial followed in the Swiss Cemetery in Hohenwald.   Mrs. Skelton, a daughter of the late Sam Scott and Ida Virginia McDonald, was born February 28, 1915 in Perry County. She was the office manager at McDonald Funeral Home, Incorporated and was married to the late Thurman Elijah Skelton.   Survivors include a daughter, Freeda (John) Hall of Jackson; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Skelton of Columbia; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.   In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Skelton was preceded in death by a son, Carmack Skelton.

Lorena Gay Nicholas, 87, died May 23, 2009 at Perry Community Hospital in Linden. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 29, 2009 at 3 p.m. at the Parker and Son Funeral Home, 210 Medina Street, Lodi, Ohio. Burial will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Lodi, Ohio.   Mrs. Nicholas was born October 21, 1921 in Enoch, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Emerson and Emma Kyle Nutter. She was a homemaker, had attended Victory Baptist Church in Lodi, Ohio and was married to the late James “Jim” Nicholas.   Survivors include a son, James (Linda) Nicholas of Medina, Ohio; a daughter, Caron (James) Egbert of Hohenwald; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.   In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Nicholas was preceded in death by seven siblings.

Malcolm B. Hensley, age 77, died May 21, 2009 at Lewis County Manor in Hohenwald. Graveside services were held May 22, 2009 in the Grassy Valley Cemetery with L. C. Loveless officiating.   Mr. Hensley, a son of the late Hunt and Allie James Hensley, was born December 8, 1931 in Hohenwald. He was a self-employed farmer.   Survivors include several cousins.

Betty Ann Lyell Willis, of Madison, died May 13, 2009 at Madison Rehabilitation and Nursing Home. Funeral services were held May 15, 2009 with burial following in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Madison.    Mrs. Willis, a native of Lewis County, was a daughter of the late Everette and Emma Voorhies Lyell.

Ruthie Allen Loving, 83, died May 17, 2009 at her residence in Hohenwald. Funeral services were held May 20, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with Bill Webb and Marcus Webb officiating. Burial followed in the Downey Cemetery.

Walter Joseph Hankins, 71, died May 16, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Funeral services were held May 19, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with David Carroll officiating.

Fay Elton Gifford, age 74, of Hohenwald, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Life Care Center of Centerville. There are no local services planned at press time.  Mr. Gifford was the son of the late Frank and Lois Batson Gifford.

Ina Pearl DePriest, 81, of Linden, died May 15, 2009 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 17, 2009 in the chapel of Young Funeral Home with Hoyt Kirk officiating. Burial followed in the Howell-Lineberry Cemetery.   Mrs. DePriest was born April 28, 1928 in Linden, a daughter of the late Fate Bedford “B.C.” Hinson and Ophelia Mathis Hinson.   Survivors include two sisters, Della Baster of Hohenwald and Carlene (Robert) Ruiz of Dearborn Heights, Michigan; one sister-in-law, Sylvia Lois Hinson of Hohenwald; five nephews, eight neices, four great-nephews and five great-nieces.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. DePriest was preceded in death by husbands, Henry Landers, Alma Haynes and Conley DePriest, brothers Alvis Hinson and Hubert Hinson, great-nephew, Patrick Tatum and great-nieces, Kathy, Erika and Lakin Gross.

James Herman Adair, age 86, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Alive Hospice in Nashville. Christopher Shawn Seiber, age 41, of Nolensville, died May 10, 2009 at his residence. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 1 p.m. at McDonald Funeral Home with Paul O’Guin officiating. Burial followed in the Melton Cemetery in Hohenwald.   Mr. Seiber, a son of Carolyn (O’Guin) Seiber and the late Waldon G. Seiber, was born June 24, 1967 in Nashville. He was a construction worker.

Reba Jewel Fain White passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2009, in New Johnsonville surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 9, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home. Burial followed at the Swiss Cemetery.

Frederick Rudolf Knoche, 95, died May 11, 2009 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. Graveside services will be held today, Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 11 a.m. in the Dabbs Cemetery in Hohenwald with Bobby Carroll officiating.

Zeno Hill Jr., 67, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Rosewood Manor in Columbia. Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 1 p.m. at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with Mike Dawson officiating. Burial will follow in the Lewis County Memorial Gardens in Hohenwald.   Mr. Hill was born September 16, 1941 in Madison, Alabama, a son of the late Zeno and Lillie May Tate Hill. He was a laborer at H.I.S.

Mack B. Harris, age 94, of Hohenwald, died Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held May 11, 2009 at Oakes and Nichols Funeral Home with Elton Jackson and Marion West officiating. Burial followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery.   Mr. Harris, a Maury County native, was a son of the late Earl B. Harris and Brownie Burkett Harris. He was a long-time member of Grinder’s Creek Church of Christ and was a retired farmer and logger. He married the former Sara Frances Goslin on November 11, 1945.

Arnold William Drape Jr., 75, died May 5, 2009 at Life Care Center in Columbia. Funeral services have not been scheduled.  Mr. Drape, born August 5, 1933 in New Hampton, Iowa, was a son of the late Arnold William Sr. and Naomi Ruth Bliss Drape. He was an insurance underwriter, a Marine Veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict and was married to the late Jane Lou Whicker Drape.

Christine Crews, 79, long-time resident of the Duck River Community, died Sunday, May 10, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Oakes and Nichols Funeral Home with Joe Rhodes and Glenn Richardson officiating. Burial followed in the Stand Cemetery in the Shady Grove Community.

Delbert Ray Mash Sr., 61, died April 28, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Funeral services were held April 30, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohewald with Johnny Higgason officiating. Burial followed in the Springer Cemetery.   Mr. Mash, born February 19, 1948 in Michigan, was a son of the late Newman and Jennie Carroll Mash. He was a self-employed construction worker.

Sommer Dawn Staggs, 31, died April 28, 2009 at Three Rivers Hospital in Waverly. Funeral services were held May 1, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with Larry Chatman officiating. Burial followed in the Lewis County Memorial Gardens.   Mrs. Staggs, a daughter of Steven Anthony and Linda Williams Anglin, was born December 30, 1977 in Hohenwald. She was a housewife and was married to Virgil Staggs.

Nelson J. Groom, Sr., a native of Linden, died at his home unexpectedly April 28, 2009, at the age of 67. Funeral services were held May 4, 2009 with M. Lloyd Weaver, Jr., Jeffrey A. Deel and Eric Musser officiating. Burial followed in the Warwick River Mennonite Church Cemetery in Newport News, Virginia.  Nelson moved to the Hampton, Virginia area in 1963 and began his career with NASA as an electronic engineer in control systems. He was one of the original developers of the left-ventricular heart pump engineered at University of Pittsburgh, retiring from NASA in 2001.   In addition to his wife, Faith S. Groom, Mr. Groom is survived by two daughters, Kelly G. (Scott) Dumire and Sharon F. Groom; a son, Nelson J. Groom Jr.; his mother, Olivia D. Groom; a sister, Carol G. (Roger) Barber; and a host of friends.  He was preceded in death by his father, William F. Alma Agnes Warren, age 93, died April 27, 2009 at Lewis County Manor. Funeral services were held April 28, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with Bobby Carroll officiating. Burial followed in the Downey Cemetery.   Mrs. Warren, a daughter of the late John and Ethel Downey Ammons, was born December 11, 1915 in Hohenwald. She was a self-employed hair dresser and was married to the late Leland Warren.   Survivors include two daughters, Janice (Ronald) Johnston and Sandra (Robert) Collins, all of Hohenwald; a brother, Glen Ammons of Hohenwald; three sisters, Dorthy Hurt of Atlanta, Georgia, Mary Helen James of Centerville and Madelyn Tharp of Hohenwald; two grandsons, two granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.   In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Warren was preceded in death by three brothers, Leamon, Carlos and Clyde Ammons and three sisters, Ruth Grimes, Roberta Grimes and Willie McNabb.

George Andrew Campbell Jr., 82, died April 23, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Funeral services were held April 26, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with Artie Collins and Mark McDonald officiating. Burial followed in the Swiss Cemetery in Hohenwald.  Mr. Campbell was born July 15, 1926 in Centerville, a son of the late George A. and Verda Breece Campbell. He was a boiler room operator at Dana and was married to Tillie DeVore Campbell.   In addition to his wife, Mr. Campbell is survived by a sister, Freida Holliman of Hohenwald and several nieces and nephews.   In addition to his parents, Mr. Campbell was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Campbell.

Ezra Carmack Skelton, 74, well-known Church of Christ minister, died at his residence Saturday, April 25, 2009. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at Graymere Church of Christ with John Vaughan, James England, Bill McDonald and Dr. Tom Campbell officiating. The Kirk Brothers conducted graveside services at Polk Memorial Gardens. Oakes and Nichols Funeral Directors assisted the family with arrangements.  Mr. Skelton was born in Wayne County on August 29, 1934 and was a graduate of Hickman County High School. He earned degrees at Freed-Hardeman University and Lipscomb University and later did graduate work at Peabody College and Harding University Graduate School.  He was a pulpit minister for 40 years for churches of Christ in Lawrenceburg, Hohenwald, Nashville, Jackson and Chattanooga. For over 12 years he was Associate Minister at Graymere Church of Christ.  From 1956-1962, he was a member of the faculty of Lewis County High School. In addition to preaching, Mr. Skelton was an avid gardener and enjoyed woodworking.  He was preceded in death by his father, Thurman E. Skelton,   Survivors include his mother, Lura Mae McDonald Skelton, a resident of Life Care of Columbia; wife of 46 years, Nancy Hawk Skelton of Columbia; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Dr. Tom Campbell of Franklin; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Misty Skelton of Columbia; six grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Freda and John Hall of Jackson; and three nieces.  Memorials may be made to the Carmack and Nancy Skelton Endowed Scholarship Fund at Freed-Hardeman University, established to train future preachers, c/o Development Office, 158 East Main Street, Henderson, Tennessee 38340.

Martha Francis Gordon, 90, died April 23, 2009 at her residence in Lyles. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 26, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home in Centerville with Mark Walton and Thomas Mayberry officiating. Burial followed in the Campground Cemetery.   Mrs. Gordon, a daughter of the late James Norris and Bessie Annette Arnold Bates, was born October 30, 1918 in Hickman County. She was a cook at Centerville Elementary School and was a member of Fairfield Baptist Church and Senior Citizens.  Survivors include three sons, David Gordon of Williamsport, Gary Gordon of Hohenwald and Larry Gordon of Summertown; four daughters, Jean Travis of Hampshire, Betty Dudley of Nunnelly, Bessie Shepard of Centerville and Reba Barnes of Lyles; a sister, Ruth Owings of California; 25 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren and 41 great-great-grandchildren.   In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gordon was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby and Nickey Gordon, a daughter, Faye Gordon, a brother, John Bates and three sisters, Christine Pollock, Gladys Seebers and Lula Maye Beard.

Ruth Evelyn Carroll, age 89, died April 16, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center at Columbia. Funeral services were held April 18, 2009 at McDonald Funeral Home with Van Ward and L. C. Loveless officiating. Burial followed in the Piney Cemetery.   Mrs. Carroll was born December 7, 1919 in Waynesboro, a daughter of the late Robert and Martha Skelton Whitehead. She was a laborer at Henry I. Siegel and was married to the late Clifford Franklin Carroll.   Survivors include four sons, Clovis (Mary Nell) Carroll, Kenneth Carroll, Donnie (Linda) Carroll and Ted Carroll, all of Hohenwald; a daughter, Wanda (Ronnie) Frazier of Hohenwald; two brothers, James Whitehead of Hohenwald and Carl Whitehead of Waynesboro; four sisters, Annie Frazier of Hohenwald, Nora Graff of Monroe, Michigan and Rebecca Higgins and Fannie Warren, both of Waynesboro; 28 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.   In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Carroll was preceded in death by three sons, Alvin, Rodger and Franklin Clifford Carroll
