On the morning of Friday, April 23, 2021, James Richard “Jimmy” Hurt, age 89, gained his heavenly wings. He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Sue (Harder) Hurt, daughter; Kellie (Hurt) Spitzer; beloved twin grandsons, Christopher Michael and Hadley James Spitzer; sister-in-law, Imodean “Imy” Clay; and niece, Kimberly Clay. Jimmy was predeceased by his son, James Christopher Hurt; father, Dr. I.G. Hurt, Jr.; mother, Rachel Black Hurt; and twin brother, Bobby E. Hurt.

Isham and Rachel Hurt were blessed with twin boys, Jimmy and Bobby, on January 4, 1932, and they were the first set of twins born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1932. The family moved to Trezevant, Tennessee, soon after their birth, then relocated to Hohenwald in 1939.

Jimmy graduated from Lewis County High School in 1951. After graduation, he spent four years in the United States Air Force. While stationed in England, during his time off, he enjoyed traveling in Europe. Upon finishing his tour of duty in the Air Force, Jimmy returned home to Tennessee, attended the University of Tennessee, and graduated with a Doctorate in Pharmacy. After graduation, Jimmy returned to Hohenwald to work as the pharmacist at his father’s drug store, B & O Pharmacy. Upon his father’s retirement, Jimmy became the sole owner of B & O Pharmacy. He was also a consultant pharmacist at Lewis County Hospital for many years, and became a full-time pharmacist at Lewis County Hospital after the sale of B&O Pharmacy. Jimmy retired from the hospital in 1994. He also served on the board of the Housing Authority for 30 years.

Jimmy married Sue Harder Hurt in 1962, and this past March, they celebrated 59 years of marriage. They were proud parents of two children, Chris and Kellie. The day their daughter, Kellie, made them grandparents was such a special day, and their twin grandsons, Christopher and Hadley, have been the light of their lives.

Jimmy was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hohenwald for over 60 years and served in different capacities over the years. His church and church family meant the world to him.

Jimmy’s hobbies were traveling, oil painting, arts and crafts, spending time on his computer, as well as his love for working in his yard and planting flowers around his home. He enjoyed visiting with his friends and sharing emails. He loved spending time with his precious grandsons, especially special memories made with them at the beach in Florida each summer, taking them on a Disney cruise, and visiting the water park in Pigeon Forge. The last few years, Jimmy generously gifted them with special trips to Walt Disney World, New York City, and Washington, D.C., and enjoyed seeing their photos and hearing stories of their experiences.

Jimmy was a very special and unique individual, who never met a stranger, and always had a smile on his face. He loved his friends and family, and had a heart of gold. He was the best husband, father, and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at 3:00 PM, at the Hohenwald First United Methodist Church with Tom Gibson officiating.

Visitation with the family will be held from 1:00 PM-3:00 PM on Sunday as well.
