Horner, Mary Beatrice
Mary Beatrice Chandler Horner was born on August 25, 1932, in the Coble Community of Hickman County and passed away on October 20, 2022, in Centerville. She was 90 years old.
She is the daughter of the late Elmer and Candace Chessor Chandler.
She is also preceded in death by her husband Ralph Harding Horner, sons Don Randy Horner and Eric Dean Horner, brother Wallace Chandler, and sisters Sharon Armstrong and Lucy Fuller.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law Robbie Horner of Centerville. She was “Granny B” to four granddaughters, seven great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. She had many nieces, nephews, and members of the Coble Community that she raised and loved. Along with many other relatives, friends, and loved ones.
She was a member of the Sulphur Creek Church of Christ and attended for as long as her health allowed. She would home-make the communion bread every Sunday.
Beatrice was a farmer all of her life. She grew up “down on the creek” and had cattle, hogs, peacocks, chickens, and ducks. She bailed hay and raised corn as well. She loved her tractors, especially her John Deere. She was tough and strong and was known to outwork any man and then turn around and cook supper for all the men she worked with. She had an incredible work ethic and would not quit until the job was done.
She was an excellent cook. Some of the family’s favorite dishes were her coconut cake, cracklin’ cornbread, squirrel stew, and her deer backstrap that she had mastered getting the gamey taste out of. She loved to go hunting for squirrels for her cooking.
Beatrice was also very creative. She was always making something. She sewed, quilted, and crocheted. Most of the things she made she would give away to others for them to enjoy. She crocheted many strawberries, boots, angels, purses with a penny (So you were never broke), and turtles. She would often search craft books for inspiration and then make the things she found there.
She was simple and lived a simple life. She would help anybody who needed it. She was the Queen of Sulphur and will be deeply missed by her family and by so many friends and neighbors.
