Hinson, Shirley Ann
Shirley Ann Hinson (née Garrette), age 89, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Born on January 25, 1936, in Aetna, Tennessee, Shirley lived a life rooted in faith, family, and service to others.
A devoted Christian and longtime member of Kimmins Church of Christ, Shirley’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. She spent 62 years living in Kimmins, where she was an active part of her church community and cherished the fellowship she found there. Her love for her church family remained strong even after moving to Knoxville later in life.
Shirley was a loving wife to her late husband Richard Hinson. Together they built a life filled with love and shared experiences. One of their most treasured traditions was taking yearly vacation trips with their daughter Marisa, granddaughter Kirstie, and other beloved family members including Ashley and Mandy. After Richard’s retirement, the couple embarked on a memorable month-long journey out west, exploring national parks and monuments—a testament to their adventurous spirit and deep bond.
She is survived by and was a dedicated mother to Marisa Durham and mother-in-law to Michael Durham. Her role as grandmother to Kirstie Durham brought her immense joy. Shirley also held close relationships with her sisters Minnie Barber (and husband Clyde), Kathy Rice, and brother-in-law Carl Daughetry. Her extended family included many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were touched by her warmth and generosity.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband Richard Hinson; her parents Elva Devore and Roy Garrette; sisters Margie Willis (and husband Leon) and Nancy Daugherty; brothers Billy Garrette (and wife Betty) and Bobby Garrette (and wife Joyce), and others, all of whom she missed dearly.
A woman of many talents, Shirley had a special gift for sewing. She was an accomplished seamstress who lovingly crafted wedding dresses for several family members and friends. She also found great joy in tending to her yard and growing beautiful flowers that brightened both her home and the lives of those around her.
Her legacy is one of unwavering faith, quiet strength, creativity, and enduring love for those she held dear. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
Visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at McDonald Funeral Home – Lewis County with funeral services to immediately follow beginning at 1:00 pm with Johnny Clayton officiating. Burial will then follow in the O’Guin Cemetery, Hohenwald, TN.
