Downey, Carlos Eugene
Carlos Eugene Downey passed away peacefully on May 11, 2025, in Hartsville, TN, at the age of 83, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 26, 1942, in Perry County, TN, to the late Burton and Zula Downey, and lived a life marked by devotion to his loved ones and a passion for the simple joys of life.
He was a faithful, caring, and loving husband to his wife of 61 years, Carolyn Joyce Nutt Downey, a loving father to his daughter Carla (Wayne) Downey Clifford, and daughter-in-law Joy Downey, and a guiding light to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Although he was predeceased by his son, Jeffery Downey, and siblings Patricia Johnson, Paul Downey, and Cullen Downey, Carlos’s memory lives through his family.
In his professional life, Carlos dedicated many years to the state highway department, where his strong work ethic made him well-respected among his colleagues.
Carlos’s interests painted a picture of a man deeply connected to the natural world and his community. He was an avid fisherman, taking great pleasure in the tranquility of the outdoors. His love for his farm was evident to all who knew him, as he could often be found working in his shop, riding his tractor, and simply enjoying the beauty of the land he cherished.
Above all, Carlos adored his family. Watching his grandbabies play the sports they loved brought considerable joy to his heart, and he never missed an opportunity to be there for them, cheering them on from the sidelines. His grandchildren, Chaz (Haley) Downey, Daytona (Katelyn) Wallace, Saleen Wallace, McLaren (Heather) Wallace, Halston Downey, and Brooklyn Downey, and great-grandchildren, Layton Downey, Hudson Downey, Grayson Downey, Indy Wallace, and Kennedy Dowell, were the light of his life. The anticipation of another little one on the way filled him with delight. Known affectionately as “Pa” by his grandbabies, Carlos’s ice cream dates with his granddaughter were treasured moments, filled with laughter.
Carlos was a wonderful man whose faithfulness and kindness never wavered. Those who knew him would describe him as loving and kind. His love for his family was his compass, guiding him through life’s many seasons.
