Kenneth Edward “Ken” Clay, 75, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 in a local health care facility. Ken was raised in Old Hickory, and relocated to Chattanooga in 1953 to work at the DuPont plant. He retired as supervisor in 1985 after 31 years of service. Ken was a lifelong fan of the University of Tennessee Volunteers football team and enjoyed tailgating with family and friends before the home games. He also enjoyed planting a vegetable garden each spring and continued to raise tomatoes after moving to Wellington Place in 2006. Ken sold pecans each fall and could be seen delivering pecans to friends in his faithful Old Blue 1963 Chevrolet pickup truck. Ken was an avid golfer and was a member of the Valleybrook and Creeks Bend Golf Courses, and enjoyed many golfing trips with friends through the years. Ken and his wife, Imy, worked as volunteer marshals at many LPGA, PGA, and Senior golf tour events, among them the Sara Lee LPGA Gold Tournament in Hermitage for 11 years and at The Vinny, Vince Gill’s Charity Golf Tournament in Nashville for 14 years. Ken was predeceased by his mother, Lois Harper Clay; father, Raymond (Teenie) Clay; and grandparents, Myrtle Davis Clay, Joseph Ernest Clay, and Geneva Harper. Ken is survived by his wife of 56 years, Imodean H. “Imy” Clay of Hixson; daughter, Kimberly A. Clay of Hixson; sister, Jacklyn Edwards of Old Hickory; brother, Wayne (Dorris Nell) Clay of New Johnsonville; and several nieces and nephews. Special thanks for the loving care of Dorothy Hyder, and much appreciation and thanks to Dr. Steven Dowlen, Dr. Matthew Kodsi, Wellington Place of Hixson, NHC HealthCare and Soddy-Daisy Health Care. Thelma Blocker, Thelma Blocker, age 75, died January 2, 2010 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. January 5, 2010 at McDonald Funeral Home with Bobby Carroll, minister of Pineview Church of Christ, officiating. Burial took place in the Memory Gardens in Centerville. Born October 5, 1934 in Wayne County, she was a daughter of the late Bill Poag and Agnes Nutt Poag. Mrs. Blocker was bookkeeper for Lewis County Manor from 1975 until becoming administrator in 1978 until 1991. “She was a dedicated and loyal employee,” stated Mark Davis, Chief Operations Officer for Tennessee Health Management. She is survived by her husband, James Wiley Blocker; daughter, Celeste Blocker of Hohenwald; sister, Marie Logan of Nashville; granddaughter, Aleczandria Blocker Duncan of Hohenwald; great granddaughter, Trezian Magenta Jagger Blocker Duncan, also of Hohenwald. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Alec Blocker. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Pine-view Church of Christ Benevolence Fund.
Mary Tom Couch Patton, formerly of Hohenwald, died November 4, 2009 in Old Hickory. Mrs. Patton, age 95, was a daughter of the late Charlie and Zora Couch. Funeral services were held November 9, 2009 at Phillips Robinson Funeral Home in Old Hickory. Interment took place in the Oak Grove Davis Cemetery in Hohenwald. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hughie Patton; brothers, Willie, Carl, and Fred Couch; and children, Al and Tommy Patton and Fredda Murphy. She is survived by three daughters, Dorothy and Joann Patton of Hermitage and Connie Patton of Farmersburg, Indiana; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Derrick Allen Staggs Graveside services for Derrick Allen Staggs were held 11 a.m. January 4, 2010 at Swiss Cemetery. Glen Floyd, pastor of Freedom Holy Temple, officiated. Mr. Staggs, age 25, died December 30, 2009. He was born February 22, 1984 in Memphis to Bridgett Shoopman Staggs and the late Henry Staggs. He was a truck driver for JLM Transportation. In addition to his mother, Mr. Staggs is survived by two daughters, Kaylyn and Leah Staggs of North Carolina; one sister, Kandy Clutter of Wilder; one brother, Kirk Staggs of Hohenwald; one half-brother, Steve Staggs of Columbus, Ohio; and paternal grandmother, Mamie Staggs of Hohenwald. He was preceded in death by his father and sister, Shanon Hooks. McDonald Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Michael Lynn Wiss, of Unionville, died January 10, 2010 at Heritage Medical Center in Shelbyville. He was 52. A son of Tommie Jean Seiber Wiss of Hohenwald and the late Paul Franklin Wiss, he was born January 18, 1957 in Hohenwald. He was employed as a construction mechanic. Services were held 1:00 p.m. January 13, 2010 at McDonald Funeral Home with Malcom George, minister of Lomax Church of Christ, officiating. Burial followed in the Edwards Cemetery. In addition to his mother, Mr. Wiss is survived by a son, Michael Franklin Wiss of Columbia; two brothers, Steve Wiss of Meridianville, Alabama and Terry Wiss of Clarksville; and one grandchild.
Jack Odell Lenz, Jack Odell Lenz, of 2250 Gladden Road, Counce, died January 8, 2010 at Jackson Madison County General in Jackson. He was 66. Mr. Lenz was born December 30, 1943 in Dyersburg to the late Lewis Lenz and Marie White Lenz. He was married to Helen Durham Lenz, formerly of Hohenwald. Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. January 11, 2010 at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald with Art McCormick officiating. Burial took place in the Swiss Cemetery. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Jack Lenz, Jr. of Camden; one daughter, Cynthia A. Irvin of Pheonix, Arizona; one step-daughter, Janet Christina Cepallos of Nashville; two brothers, Scot Lenz of LaPorte, Indiana and Richard Lenz of Springfield, Ohio; five sisters, Fay Murrah of Morristown, Beverly Medes of Dyersburg, Joy Daize of Course Gold, California, Helen Gray of Orange City, Florida and Carol Prosser of New Castle, Indiana; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Hazel Brown, Hazel Brown, 84, died January 5, 2010 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. January 7, 2010 at McDonald Funeral Home with Ed Brown and Keith Clark officiating. Burial took place in Downey Cemetery. Mrs. Brown was born April 16, 1925 in Lewis County to the late Wilburn Mash and Lettie Mae McCann Mash. Henry Ford Turnbow Henry Ford Turnbow, 85, died January 18, 2010 at Roane Medical Center in Harriman. Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. January 21, 2010 in the McDonald Funeral Home chapel with Richard Tate officiating. Burial took place in the Swiss Cemetery. Mr. Turnbow, a retired clerical/bookkeeper for the Lewis County Highway Department, was born February 19, 1924 in Lewis County to the late Joe E. Turnbow and Mary Alice Bunch Turnbow. He was married to the late Dorothy Turnbow. Survivors include one son, Craig (Betty) Turnbow of Kingston; two sisters, Zona Edwards of Marietta, Georgia and Vada Williams of Hohenwald; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Turnbow was preceded in death by two sons, Gary and Jimmy Turnbow and a brother, DeFellow Turnbow. Family requests that friends who wish to make memorial donations in lieu of flowers be made to the Hohenwald United Methodist Church.
Hubert Calvin Brewer, Hubert Calvin “Punkin” Brewer of Lawrenceburg died January 19, 2010 at Crockett Hospital. He was 57. Services were held at 1:00 p.m. January 22, 2010 at Freedom Holy Temple Church with Glen Floyd officiating. Burial took place in the Brush Creek Cemetery in Lawrence County. A logger, Mr. Brewer was born February 8, 1952 in Lawrenceburg to Vernie Mitchell Brewer and the late Hubert Brewer. He is survived by, in addition to his mother, one son, Michael Hubert Brewer of Lawrenceburg; one daughter, Brenda Faye Brewer of Hohenwald; two brothers, Hollis Brewer of Hohenwald and Doris Brewer of Lawrenceburg; and eight grandchildren. In addition to his father, Mr. Brewer was preceded in death by a sister, Earline Staggs. McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald was in charge of arrangements.
Juanita Fern Bean, Juanita Fern Bean, 69, died January 22, 2010 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Funeral services will be held at Full Gospel Pentecostal Church today, January 28, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the Deavers Cemetery. A nurse’s technician at Lewis County Health and Rehabilitation Center, Ms. Bean was born June 20, 1940 in Tazewell County, Virginia to the late Maude Keen. Survivors include one son Danny Keen of Duck River; two daughters, Elizabeth Wagner of Hohenwald and Donna Bean of Centerville; three brothers, Junior Kauffer of Aberdeen, Maryland, George Street of Duck River and Tony Keen of Cocnwingo, Maryland; two grandsons, William Ray Frazier and Michael Sharpe, both of Hohenwald. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Miller. McDonald Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Juanita Edwards, Juanita Edwards, 93, died January 24, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. She resided in Colliervillle. Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. January 26, 2010 in the McDonald Funeral Home chapel with Barry Grider officiating. Burial took place in the Swiss Cemetery. A daughter of the late Herman Lee McDonough and Stella Poore McDonough, Mrs. Edwards was born January 18, 1917 in Bolivar. She was married to the late Ivio C. Edwards. Survivors include one son, Johnnie Lee (Lori) Edwards of Collierville; one daughter, Yvonne Neal (John) Blackstone of Nesbit, Mississippi; one step daughter, Judy Edwards (Jerry) Barber of Columbia; one foster sister, Beatrice “Bappy” Gatewood Brown of Gallatin; two step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Edwards was preceded in death by a brother, James Eldon McDonough and granddaughter, Natalie Yvonne Bates.
Tom “Tom Tom” Thompson, age 52, a resident of Dial Hollow Road in Hohenwald, passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Graveside inurnment was Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Polk Memorial Gardens with Rick Points officiating. Williams Funeral Home in Columbia assisted the family with arrangements. The Alexandria, Louisiana native was born October 29, 1957, the son of the late Rap Ropozo and Jane Moore Ropozo. He was the husband of Melinda Lee Arnett Thompson. Tom was a self employed handyman and heavy equipment operator. Survivors in addition to Melinda, his wife, include two sons; Tommy Thompson of Summertown and Reed Dudley of Ethridge; step-children, Brandy Cole of Clinton, Michigan, Tyler Cole of Michigan and Corey Whitaker of Hohenwald; three brothers, Tim Thompson and Robin Ropozo, both of Hohenwald and Randy Ropozo of Miami, Florida; one sister, Beth Ann Pierce of Homestead, Florida; and four grandchildren.
Crowell Allison Rodgers, Funeral services for Crowell Allison Rodgers, age 84, were held at 1:00 p.m. January 27 in the McDonald Funeral Home chapel with Marcus Webb and Malcom George offiiciating. Burial took place in the Warren Cemetery in Lobelville.Mr. Rodgers died January 24, 2010 at ACYVAMC in Murfreesboro. He was born June 30, 1925 in Linden to the late Clyde William Rodgers and Annie Pauline Rodgers. Survivors include one brother, Jellous Rodgers of Hohenwald; three sisters, Elva Sue Rogers of Chicago, Illinois, Dorothy Bell Peters and Wanda Ann Fuller, both of Hohenwald. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Willie Ray Rodgers and Joe Wayne Rodgers and one sister, Alma Marie Smith.
Maison Briley Coker, one month old son of Jesse Johnathan “John” Coker, Sr. and Jennie Ruth Smith Coker, died Saturday, January 23, 2010 at his residence on Clarke School Road in Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Columbia with Pastor Dave Baker officiating. Burial followed in Cross Bridges Cemetery. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors assisted the family with arrangements. In addition to his parents, Maison is survived by one sister, Myla Grace Coker of Mt. Pleasant; one brother, Jesse Johnathan Coker, Jr. of Mt. William Abraham Monroe, William Abraham Monroe, 86, died January 24, 2010 at his home. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. February 1, 2010 in the McDonald Funeral Home chapel with Bobby Carroll, minister of Pineview Church of Christ, officiating. Burial took place February 2, 2010 in the Valhalla Memory Gardens in Huntsville, Alabama. Mr. Monroe was born May 16, 1923 in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky to the late Nathan B. Monroe and Nannie Key Monroe. He was a retired First Sergeant in the United States Army. Survivors include four sons, Michael W. Monroe of Scottsboro, Alabama, Patrick L. Monroe of Peoria, Illinois, Howard E. Monroe of Huntland and Danny L. Monroe of Huntsville, Alabama; one daughter, Linda K. Shirley of Hohenwald; one brother, Nathan Monroe of Carmichael, California; two sisters, Minnie Maurice of Hemet, California and Mary C. Hilberger of Yucaipa, California; 15 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Monroe was preceded in death by a son Ted R. Monroe, his first wife, Elsie Lee Olds Monroe and second wife, Esther Thurlene Biers Monroe.

Burial followed in the Downey Cemetery. Mr. Bell, age 77, died at his home January 28, 2010. He was married to Ellen June York Bell. He was born June 18, 1932 in Maury County to the late Hardy Lee Bell and Bessie B. Church Bell. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, James Edwin Bell of Hohenwald and William Royce Bell of Franklin; two daughters, Connie Sue Garrett, also of Franklin and Debbie Lynn Bell of Bethesda; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Johnny Eugene Bell, a brother, Dennis Franklin Bell and a sister, Annie Catherine Porter.
Addie Jane Rodgers, Addie Jane Rodgers, 88, died February 2, 2010 at her residence in Hohenwald. Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, February 4, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in the McDonald Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry McDonald, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Edwards Cemetery. Born June 2, 1921 at Farmers Exchange, Mrs. Rodgers was a daughter of the late Taylor Edwards and Ora Vaughn Edwards. She was a homemaker and the wife of the late Herbert Hensley Rodgers. Survivors include four sons, Bobby (Carolyn) Rodgers of Hohenwald, Ted (Kay) Rodgers of Tampa, Texas, Keith (Linda) Rodgers of McEwen and Freddy (Jeanne) Rodgers of Summertown; three daughters, Doris (Buddy) Wyatt of Old Hickory, Janice (Gary) Whitehead and Libby (Ronnie) Belew, both of Hohenwald; 22 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren and five great, great grandchildren. Mrs. Rodgers was preceded in death by her husband, father and mother and one grandchild.

Bobby Gene McCann, Bobby Gene McCann, 67, died February 6, 2010 at his home in Hohenwald. Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. February 8, 2010 at McDonald Funeral Home with Jerry McDonald, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, officiating. Burial followed in the Swiss Cemetery. A logger for Tree Frog Logging, Mr. McCann was married to Betty Jean Stout McCann. He was born September 27, 1942 to the late William Bufford McCann and Camilla Stutts McCann. Survivors, in addition to his wife, are one son, Bobby McCann of Hohenwald; one daughter, Judy Johnson of Centerville; four brothers, William McCann, Jerry McCann, Joe McCann and Ed McCann, all of Hohenwald; three sisters, Evelyn Keeton, Mozetta Hinson and Betty Fay Jones, also of Hohenwald; ten grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Billy Joe McCann.
Bryon Russell Brown After a year long battle with cancer, Bryon Russell Brown, age 39, died February 5, 2010 at the home of his parents, Bobby R. and Betty Whitehead Brown. He was born February 8, 1970 in Hohenwald. Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. February 7, 2010 in the McDonald Funeral Home chapel with Rod Littrell officiating. Burial took place in the Whitehead Cemetery in Wayne County. In addition to his parents, Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Terri Woodie Brown; two daughters, Tia Brown and Taylor Brown, both of Hohenwald; one sister, Bobbie Renae Toban of Columbia; one brother, Barry R. Brown of Hohenwald; and maternal grandmother, Louvada Parrish of Murfreesboro. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Elvis Whitehead; maternal grandmother, Earlene Jackson Whitehead; paternal grandfather, Raymond Brown; and paternal grandmother, Bessie Mathis.
Buddy Harder, 73, of Linden, died Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Perry Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Young Funeral Home with Aaron Warnick officiating. Interment took place in the Graves Cemetery. Mr. Harder was born in Lewis County to the late Carlos Harder and Cyrena Hickerson Harder. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and retired from DuPont at New Johnsonville. He was currently a resident of the Perry County Nursing Home. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Harder Castelle, and a brother, Jamie Harder. Survivors include one daughter, Angel (Brian) Moore of Linden; three sons, Barry (Wendy) Harder of Knoxville, Billy (Deborah) Harder of New Johnsonville and Tim Harder of Parsons; two sisters, Sue Hurt of Hohenwald and Imodene Clay of Chattanooga; five grandsons; one great granddaughter and five step grandchildren. Gladys Louise Robb Staggs, age 88, of Summertown, passed away Friday, January 8, 2010, at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services for Mrs. Staggs were conducted Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Neal Funeral Home with Glenn Floyd, pastor of Freedom Holy Temple of Hohenwald, officiating. Interment followed in Summertown Cemetery. Neal Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements. She was a native of Maury County, a homemaker and a member of Summertown Community Church. Her parents were the late John Hugh and Nolie Adams Robb. Mrs. Staggs was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Staggs; one brother, James E. Robb; three sisters, Dewey Cooper, Jewel Sadlow and Dorothy Johnson. She is survived by five daughters, Robbie M. Belew of Columbia, Catherine Kendrick of Clarksville, Jennifer Toungett and Sherry Staggs, both of Summertown, and Shelia F. Carroll of Hohenwald; five sons, Dewey L. Staggs of Columbia, James L. Staggs of Louisiana, Joseph M. Staggs of Summertown, David P. Staggs of Leoma and John R. Staggs of Summertown; one brother, John Ray Robb of Nashville; seventeen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Sarah Peeler Stricklin, of Wilmington, died Friday, December 25, 2009, in Boca Raton, Florida. She was born in Hickman County, the daughter of the late Enos D. Peeler and Celia J. Hinson Peeler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Simpson Stricklin. She attended Lewis County High School in Hohenwald and business college in Nashville. Prior to coming to Wilmington, she and her family resided in Oak Ridge, Huntsville, Alabama, Sidell, Louisana, and San Jose, California. Mrs. Stricklin was a member of Wrightsville Beach Baptist Church. She had worked for the City of Wilmington in Public Utilities division and was a member of Eastern Star #390 in Oak Ridge and a former member of the Marbella American Business Women’s Association. She is survived by her daughter, Susan S. Howard of Boca Raton; her niece, Suva Ann Bastin and husband, Jack, of Clarksville; and several grand nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Andrews Market Street Chapel. Interment followed in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
Audrey Margaret Loveless, 92, passed away February 9, 2010 at Three Rivers Hospital in Waverly. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the McDonald Funeral Home chapel with Richard Tate officiating. Burial will follow in the Swiss Cemetery. A homemaker, Mrs. Loveless was the wife of the late Springer Loveless. She was born September 12, 1917 in Hohenwald to the late Bert Grinder and Sisley Floyd Grinder. Survivors include one son Donald R. Loveless of New Johnsonville; one daughter, Gail Donaldson of Flat Rock, Michigan; two sisters, Mamie Landers and Reba Powers, both of Nashville, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Richard Stanfield Hinson Jr., Richard Stanfield Hinson, Jr., age 80, died February 12, 2010 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. Funeral services were held Sunday, February 14, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of McDonald Funeral Home. Johnny Clayton, minister of Kimmins Church of Christ, officiating. He was born December 4, 1929 to the late Richard Stanfield Hinson, Sr. and Goldie Simmons Hinson. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Marisa (Charles) Durham; one sister, Ermadean Hickerson; and one granddaughter, Kirstie Marie Durham.

Bobby Gene Warren died Tuesday, February 16, 2010 in Hohenwald at the age of 49. Services were held at 3:00 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Home in Waynesboro with Harold Morris officiating. Burial followed in the Highland United Methodist Church Cemetery at Lawrenceburg. He was born December 23, 1960 in Savannah, the son of the late James Bluford and Annie Belle Staggs Warren. Mr. Warren was a maintenance worker at Wayne County Boot Camp and City of Clifton. He had served 17 years in the Tennessee Army National Guard achieving the rank of sergeant. He is survived by his wife, Connie Belle Reynolds Warren; son, Robert Paul Warren; two daughters, Holly Marie Warren and Angel Nicole Warren; one brother, Bluford Warren; two sisters, Debbie Darlene Hobbs and Amanda Sue Wright; and nine grandchildren.
Wilma Helen Spurgeon Wilma Helen Spurgeon, age 80, died February 17, 2010 at her home in Hohenwald. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. February 19, 2010 in the chapel of McDonald Funeral Home. Mrs. Spurgeon was married to the late Claude Ray Spurgeon. She was born February 18, 1930 in Hohenwald to the late Carlos Pope and Rosa Dial Pope. Survivors include two sons, Ray Eugene Spurgeon and Lanny Earl Spurgeon; two daughters, Shirley Spurgeon and Patsy Dash; ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
Freddie William Roth Services for Freddie William Roth, age 81, were held Sunday, February 21, 2010 in the chapel of McDonald Funeral Home. Mr. Roth died February 19, 2010 at Lewis Health Center in Hohenwald. He was born December 12, 1928 in Lewis County to the late Frederick Jacob Roth and Gertrude Wolf Roth. The husband of Georgia Ruth Turnbow Roth, he was an Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was employed as a project manager for Edwin Blocker Paving Company, Brinley Construction Company, Charles Green Construction Company, Wayne County Highway Department, and Jenkins and Jenkins Construction. Mr. Roth was an employee of the Tennessee State Highway Department for 30 years, retiring in 1978. In addition to his wife, Mr. Roth is survived by one son, David Roth; one daughter, Sharon (Phil) Roth-Oliver; two sisters, Wilma Churchwell and Freda Lewis; two granddaughters, Emma and Katie Oliver. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Martha Watson.

Mike Nolen, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiated. Burial took place in Swiss Cemetery. Mr. Humphreys, 81, died February 18, 2010 at Ft. Walton Beach Medical Center in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. Doug was born in Hohenwald, on October 3, 1928 to the late Honorable Douglas David Humphreys, Jr. and Elise Hinson Humphreys. After serving his country in the United States Army, Doug returned to Nashville, with his wife, the late Patsy Lewis Humphreys, where he attended Peabody/Vanderbilt University. He completed his Masters Degree in mathematics, and while working on his Doctorate took a teaching job with McCallie private boys school in Chattanooga. His daughter, Teresa Humphreys Holden, was born. Doug was then offered a teaching position with the prestigious Indian Springs private school near Birmingham, Alabama, where he taught math, directed the glee club, and designed a student convocation building for the school. Two more daughters, Janet Humphreys and Nancy Humphreys Jones, were born. Wanting to always provide the best for his family and seeing an opportunity to use his math skills in the new space program and the developing computer age, he made a career change and moved the family to Huntsville, Alabama. In Huntsville, he helped develop the first mainframe computers for NASA, helped to return the Apollo 13 astronauts to earth, and worked on the Strategic Defense Initiative or “Star Wars” program. In Huntsville, a son was born, David Douglas Humphreys IV. Working on many government contracts led him eventually to the Florida gulf coast area of Destin/Fort Walton Beach, Florida. After retiring in 1994, he could be found in his short pants and Birkenstock sandals year round. Doug leaves behind daughters; Teresa Holden and her husband, Graham, , Janet Humphreys and her husband, Mark Izard, and Nancy Jones and her husband, Jericho, a son, David Douglas Humphreys IV and wife, Leslie; granddaughters, Shanna, Rhiannon, and Madison; great-granddaughter, Lily; and his dear friend of almost thirty years, Gene Jorgenson. He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas David Humphreys Jr., his mother, Elise Hinson Humphreys, his wife, Patsy Lewis Humphreys, his bother, Boyd Humphreys, and his sister, Andeline Humphreys.

Burial followed in Memorial Gardens at Collinwood. Mrs. Smith of Collinwood was born October 29, 1930 in Waynesboro, the daughter of the late Joe Taylor Martin and Mamie Ethel Thompson Martin Melson. She was united in marriage to William Charles (W. C.) Smith on October 17, 1947 and he preceded her in death on October 25, 1995. Mrs. Smith was a beautician, a member of Collinwood Freewill Baptist Church, Collinwood, was secretary of Collinwood FCE, secretary of Collinwood Order of Eastern Star, a former treasurer of Collinwood High School Alumni Assoc., a member of the Wayne County Democratic Women’s Assoc., and was an avid Collinwood High School Trojan fan. She is survived by sons, Dr. William Steven Smith and wife, Morene, Robert Stanley Smith and wife, Lori, Richard Dennis Smith and wife, Janice; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by grandson, Chad Curry Griner; brothers, J. T. Martin, Carlton Martin, and Taylor Martin, Jr.; sisters, Dean Walters, Marie Brown; special niece, Joanne Smith; step-father, Ola (Slim) Melson. Martha Ann Baker, age 78, of Bolivar, Missouri passed away on Tuesday evening, February 23, 2010 at Citizen’s Memorial Hospital in Bolivar, Missouri. She was born April 30, 1931 in Union City, TN. Martha was a Front End Supervisor for the Kroger Grocery for 25 years retiring in 1986. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Bolivar, Missouri. She lived in Nashville before moving to Bolivar, Missouri in 1998. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Edward Baker, Sr. who passed away in 1980. Martha is survived by her three sons, Ed Baker and his wife Mary, Kelly Baker and his wife Gwen, Barry Baker and his wife Terri, and seven grandchildren. A funeral service was held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Butler Funeral Home in Bolivar, Missouri with Bro. Courtney Henderson officiating. Franklin Arthur “Art” Wanserski, age 69, died March 5, 2010 at an Alive Hospice residence in Nashville. A roofer, Mr. Wanserski was born April 5, 1940 in Zainsville, Ohio to the late Arthur Wanserski and Doris Zimmerman Wanserski. He was a United States Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Sharon Wolter Wanserski of Hohenwald; one step-son, Benji Szabrowicz of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; one step-daughter, Sandi Szabrowicz of Waukesha, Wisconsin; and one sister, Patricia Ueberfluss of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Lt. Col. (Retired) James Franklin (Colonel) Kinney, age 89, died March 3, 2010 in Louisville, Tennessee. A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Freedom Holy Temple Church with Glen Floyd officiating. A graveside service will take place 3:00 p.m. at Lewis County Memorial Gardens with military honors. Jim spent 21 years as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force. Fighting in two wars, WWII and Korea. Hhe taught the first jet pilots of King Haile Salassie of Ethiopia and was the flight leader of the last air combat mission of the Korean War. Lt. Col. Kinney was born June 14, 1920 in Alhambra, California to the late Walter James Kinney and Jewel Rankin Kinney. He grew up in Hollywood, California. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Schoolcraft Kinney of Hohenwald; two daughters, Aimee Ruth (Ralph) Tackett of Hohenwald and Marion Jewel (John) Shorrock of Indiana; one son, Richard James (Kim) Kinney of Zephyrhills, Florida; one step-daughter, Sheila Karen (Roger) Majors of Louisville; two step-sons, Herbert Blaine (Virginia) Sapp and Ernest Nathan (Dinah) Sapp, both of Hohenwald; one sister, Blanche Ellen Evans of Duarte, California; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Mary Catherine Achillich.
Silvio Andrews Sciacqua, 76, died March 3, 2010 at the Lewis County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hohenwald. Mr. Sciacqua was born June 29, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Agostino Sciacqua and Delva Pancelli Sciacqua. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a restaurant owner. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Entombment will take place in the Queen of Heaven Cemetery Mausoleum in Hillside, Illinois. Survivors include his wife, Nora Miller Scaicqua of Hohenwald; two daughters, Susan Boyd of Lake Forest, Illinois and Nina Foster of Traverse City, Michigan; one step-son, Danny Thomas of Bowling Brooke, Illinois; one step-daughter, Belinda Murray of Hohenwald; one brother, Guss Sciacqua of Naples, Florida; one sister, Corinne Sciacqua of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Smith was a minister of the Church of Christ, presently with the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ, and a member of the Salem Church of Christ.

Dave “Papa” Duncan of Girard, Georgia, 62, former resident of Hohenwald, died Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia after an extended illness. The Arkansas native retired from BE & K and SW&B Construction Companies after 35 years as a Journeyman Electrician. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Nell Duncan; children, Ben Ivey (Tammie) of Girard, Georgia, William G. Ivey of Tucmubia, Alabama, Sis McDonald (David) and Katrina Ivey, both of Hohenwald; grandchildren, Jacob and Justin Ivey, Amy Moon (Thomas), Stephen McDonald, Blake Ivey, and Bradley Chapman; and one great-grandson, Jordan Anderson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Georgia Duncan, and brother, Jimmy Duncan. Interment followed in the JACONA Cemetery, a family plot on his farm in Pleasantville. Mr. Scaife was born in Helena, Arkansas to the late Gladys and Don Scaife. He was a musician and song writer. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Brenda; three sons, Nathan and wife Tera, Cody and wife Statia, and Jake; three granddaughters, Izzie, Elise and Emma; brother, Alan Scaife; sister, Jane Scaife Thomas; nieces and nephews, Brandi, Kori, Jason, Casey, Benji, Clint and Madison.

She was a resident of Hohenwald until 1999, when she moved to Colorado to live with her daughter and husband, Holly Overbey Cooper and John Cooper. During the past several years she suffered from alzheimer and most recently from physical ailments. She is now comfortable and at peace. Margaret was the daughter of the late Maggie and Mitchell Witherspoon and the widow of Joe Herbert Overbey Jr. She had 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, James, Amos and Elvin Mathis; and two great grandsons, Treyton Isbell and Trenton Devore.

Interment took place November 13, 201 in the Burke Memorial Park in Morganton, North Carolina. Mr. Nichols was born September 11, 1938 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Frank and Adelia May Riesinger Nichols. An Army Veteran serving during Viet Nam with the Special Forces Green Berets, he was a construction inspector and a professional wrestler known as the “Scuffin Hillbilly Vick.” Survivors include his wife, Mary Heavner Nichols of Hohenwald; three sons, Vick Nichols, Jr. of Granite Falls, North Carolina, Dennis Smith of Hickory, North Carolina and Roger Nichols of Ohio; three daughters, Adelia Crowe of Hohenwald, Wanda Hayes of Hickory, North Carolina and Vicky Nichols of Ohio; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Charity Helton.
Terry Wayne Cotham, age 53 of Lawrenceburg, died November 11, 2010 at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 13, 2010 in the McDonald Funeral Home Chapel with Glen Floyd, pastor of Freedom Holy Temple Church, officiating. Interment took place in the Edwards Cemetery. Mr. Cotham was born November 10, 1957 in Hohenwald to the late James W. and Mary Cathrine Jones Cotham. He was a painter for Tri-County Painting Company. Larry T. Potts, 62, of Londonderry, Ohio, died Thursday, October 14, 2010 in the Adena Regional Medical Center unexpectedly. Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Monday, October 18, 2010 in the Ware Funeral Home in Ohio with Pastor Jerry Tackett officiating. Burial followed in Browns Chapel Cemetery, also in Ohio. Larry owned and operated the former South End Market in Circleville, Ohio and Howell’s Market in Londonderry, Ohio. He was born June 26, 1948, in Hohenwald to Junior and Willodean Harris Potts. On June 30, 1966, he married Angela Howell who survives. Also surviving are three children, Tammy Lynn Williams and companion, Rick Adams, of Hillsboro, Ohio and Larry A. (Leann) Potts, of Ray, Ohio; five grandchildren; three brothers, Dennis Potts and Jimmy (Patsy) Potts, both of Tennessee and Tim (Cheryl) Kelly, of Circleville, Ohio; four sisters, Lorene Winfrey, Judy Potts, and Melissa (Ricky) Brown, all of Tennessee and Ann (Charles) Holder of Texas; two sisters-in-law, Peggy (Kallous) Certain and Rene (Bill) Jones, both of Londonderry, Ohio; mother-in-law, Mae Howell, of Londonderry, Ohio; and stepfather, Dave Brilinski, of Clarksburg, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Terry Kelly; and father-in-law, Adrian Howell.

Letitia McClearen Cole, age 83 of Nashville, passed away Wednesday, November 10, 2010 surrounded by family members. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 13, 2010 at Phillips-Robinson Funeral Home, 2707 Gallatin Road in Nashville. Burial took place Sunday, November 114, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Bethel Cemetery in Farmer’s Exchange. She was born in the Topsy Community of Wayne County on March 28, 1927. Letitia pioneered the “Mothers Day Out” program in the early ‘60’s at Inglewood United Methodist Church, which still exists today. Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by parents, James Edgar “Ed” Skelton and Fannie Pebble Edwards Skelton and husband of 30 years, Charles Luther McClearen. She is survived by devoted husband of 22 years, Robert G. Cole; two daughters, Brenda Kay McClearen and husband James Hubbard, and Martha Pebble McClearen; two sisters, Parasada Skelton Riley and Greta Mae Cothran; two grandchildren, Kelly Dawn Reynolds and husband Jake, and Troy Lynn Morris; and great-grandchild, Beckett Troy Reynolds. Joe M. Lynch, age 77 of the Aetna Community in Hickman County, died November 18, 2010. Mr. Lynch was born April 11, 1933 in Aetna to the late William Otto and Sara Lova Brown Lynch. He was a stockman for Sam’s Club, a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of the Aetna Church of Christ. He is survived by his sister, Pearl Jenkins of Centerville; a niece he raised, Patricia Judy Lynch Gately; and several other nieces and nephews.

Ashley Self, age 27, of Lawrenceburg, died Tuesday, November 2, 2010, at Kindred Hospital in Nashville. Graveside service took place at Bumpus Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 5, 2010, with Rev. Dwayne Sparks officiating. Arrangements were made by Neal Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg. A native of Hohenwald, she was born December 23, 1982. She was a CNA and a member of the Pentecostals of Hohenwald. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Wendell Terrell Self and J. B. Stephens. She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Priscilla Stephens Hewgley and Robert Hewgley; father, Wendell Self; one brother, Charles Steven Self (Candace); stepsisters, A.J. Hewgley and Heather Hewgley, all of Lawrenceburg; maternal grandmother, Loudean Stephens of Hohenwald; and paternal grandmother, Adell Self Stephenson, also of Lawrenceburg. Interment followed in the Swiss Cemetery. Mrs. Patton was born February 6, 1920 in Hohenwald to the late Pierce and Lyda Hinson Duncan. She and her husband, Marvin Patton, owned and operated a grocery store in the Riverside community for several years. She is preceded in death by her husband and parents; a daughter, Linda Kummell and a brother, Elvin Duncan. Survivors include her daughter, Brenda Crowell of Hohenwald; brother, Edd Duncan of Asheville, North Carolina; grandchildren, Karen Moon, Gina Edwards, Jacquelin Coble, Scot Dickey, Ken Crowell and Lance Crowell, all of Hohenwald, and Greg Dickey of Nashville; eleven great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren.

Mr. Ward, a self-employed heavy equipment operator and employee of Graham Lumber Company for twenty-five years, was born in Perry County on December 29, 1942 to the late Leonard Brown Ward and Elsie Inman Ward. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints. Survivors include his wife of twenty-four years, Dale Ann Ward of Linden; children, David (Melinda) Ward of Hohenwald, Lisa Hidgon of Linden, Jamie (Jennifer) Ward of Cincinnati, Ohio, Vickie Avrett and Bruce Avrett, both of Scotts Hill; two sisters, Norma (Jackie) Duncan and Christine (John) Broadway, both of Linden; and five grandchildren. He was a self-employed businessman, owning Crossways Trading Post in Centerville, and a member of Knights of Columbus. David Leroy Tucker of Harvest, Alabama passed away Friday, December 10, 2010. He was 72. Mr. Tucker, a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, was a resident of Madison County since the early ‘80s. He was a retired engineer from Kratos and a member of the Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, retiring after serving 21 years of service. He served in Korea, Germany and Hawaii. Matthew Marlin Murphy, age 32, who recently moved to Columbia after having lived many years in College Station, Texas, died December 7, 2010 in Pulaski. Kenneth O. Loveless, 78, of the Brushy Community in Hickman County, died December 17, 2010. Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 19, 2010, with Bill McDonald officiating. Burial followed in the Milan Cemetery. A native of Hickman County, he born April 11, 1932 to the late Jim D. and Wilma Milan Loveless. Mr. Loveless was a US Army veteran serving in Korea, and also served 32 years in the Tennessee Army National Guard. He was a truck driver for Barber Oil Company for many years and a member of the Brushy Church of Christ. He worked in the construction field.
