Cook, James Thomas
James Thomas Cook, known as Tom, of Hohenwald, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on August 3, 1945, in El Paso, Texas, to the late James and Marie Cook, Tom lived a life filled with faith, family, and service to others.
A man who put God and family at the center of everything he did, Tom was known for his generous heart and steady presence. He spent more than 40 years working for Dana Corporation, where his dedication and work ethic left a lasting mark on everyone he met. Even after retirement, Tom continued to serve his community as a transportation driver for SCAT, always eager to lend a helping hand and brighten someone’s day.
Tom married the love of his life, Peggy O’Neal Cook, with whom he shared a lifetime of laughter, love, and partnership. Their enduring love story spanned 60 remarkable years. Together they raised two children, Selena Maurer (married to Bryan) and Steven Cook (married to Janet), who carry forward his legacy of kindness and integrity. He was a proud grandfather to Ciara Priest (married to Matthew), Colton Cook, Macy Maurer, and a doting great-grandfather to Jagger and Palmer Priest — his greatest joys.
Tom was a central figure in his extended family, sharing strong bonds with his siblings, including Joe Cook, Lynda Hinson, Betty (married to J.W.). Glass, Mollie Cook, and Martha (married to the late Wayne) Qualls. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Ronald Walker and David Larry Cook, but his memory will be held dear by his host of nieces and nephews, each of whom found a special place in his generous heart.
When Tom wasn’t spending time with his family, you could find him tending to his garden, a space he cared for daily and where he found peace and purpose. He had a passion for sports, especially baseball, and spent years coaching and encouraging young athletes. His enthusiasm for the game and his love for his players reflected the same devotion he gave to all aspects of his life. Above all, Tom cherished the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Each moment with them was precious, filled with laughter and stories.
Tom will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his compassion for others, and the simple, joyful way he lived each day.
Tom’s life will be celebrated during visitation with family and friends in the chapel of Adair Funeral & Cremation Services on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Funeral Services will begin at Noon on Thursday, November 6, 2025, with Rick Brown, Mike Hinson, David Lowery, and Joshua Adair officiating.
