Dorris Carmack Claud, age 85, of Nunnelly, Tennessee, went to his heavenly home on January 4, 2025, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Dorris leaves a legacy defined by humility, hard work, and unwavering commitment to his family and community.

Born on March 3, 1939, to the late Thomas McCoy and Jessie Lee Pruett Claud, Dorris spent his life working the land, cultivating not only crops but also a legacy of integrity and devotion. A proud graduate of Hickman County High School, Dorris valued a good family name and lived his life in a way that honored his roots and strengthened the bonds of those he loved. Dorris married his sweetheart, Marjorie Sue Weatherspoon, and together they built a life centered on faith, love, and family. Sunday mornings were especially meaningful to Dorris, as he cherished the sight of his family filling up the pews at church. A lifelong servant of God, he was a deacon and led singing for over 35 years, at the Nunnelly Church of Christ and later serving at Centerville Church of Christ as a Deacon for several years. His favorite Bible verse, 1 Timothy 6:6: “But godliness with contentment is great gain.”

Dorris believed a good name was the greatest inheritance a man could leave, and he lived each day to honor the Claud Family name. Dorris took pride in teaching his daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren the values of faith, honesty, and perseverance, ensuring they understood that family always comes first. An outdoorsman at heart, Dorris loved tending his garden and working the land. As a farmer and logger, he took pride in his labor and was widely respected for his dedication to raising cattle and registered hogs. His hard work earned him recognition as Tennessee Pork All-American, a testament to his expertise and commitment to excellence. He also served on the Co-op Board of Directors, contributing to the agricultural community with wisdom and integrity.

Dorris found joy in coaching women’s softball for 13 years, and helped with youth softball, where his big-hearted and generous spirit shone as he mentored young athletes. Whether cheering on the Yankees, admiring Derek Jeter’s sportsmanship, or rooting for Vanderbilt basketball, Dorris’s love for competition was matched only by his love for his family. Family gatherings, especially Sunday dinners, were the heart of Dorris’s home. He relished the warmth of his loved ones around the table, particularly enjoying his daughter’s pineapple upside-down cake. Even when unwell, Dorris could always be tempted by a Dr. Pepper and a cookie—a simple pleasure that brought him comfort and joy.

Dorris Claud, fondly called “Daddy” or “Popa” is survived by his devoted daughter, Melody (Danny) Skelton; his loving grandchildren; Matthew (Kim) Skelton, Megan (Ben) Lampley, Ethan (Alisha) Skelton, and great-grandchildren who will carry on his values and traditions; Abbie, Chloe, Kinzie, Cole, Caden, Luke, Sawyer, Emery and another one on the way, Charlie Mack. Sister-in-laws; Peggy Claud of Chapmansboro, Tennessee, Debbie Anderson of Centerville, Tennessee and several special nieces and nephews.

Those who were called to their heavenly reward prior to Dorris were his beautiful wife of 63 years, Marjorie Sue Claud, his parents, brother, Joe Thomas Claud, sister-in-law Diane Hubbs, brother-in-law Barry Anderson, and nephew Brad Anderson.

Humble and kind, Dorris lived a life that reflected his deep love for God, his family, and his community. His legacy will endure in the lives of those he touched, reminding all who knew him of the beauty of a life well-lived and a heart well-loved. A community forever enriched by his presence. May we find peace in the profound example he set for us all.

Visitation with the family will be 8 Jan 2025 from 4:00  – 8:00 PM  and 9 Jan 2025 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at McDonald Funeral Home, Inc. – Hickman County.  Funeral Services will be held 9 Jan 2025 at 11:00 AM at McDonald Funeral Home, Inc. – Hickman County with burial to follow at Pruett Cemetery, 801 Bucksnort Rd, Only, TN.
