Adolphus E. Deason died in Selma, Josephine Co., Oregon, near Grant’s Pass, in 1954 (per his death certificate). Although he is traceable in the censuses, he remains, to a large degree, a mystery. He was certainly unconventional, but a talented man, to say the least. He was a stonecutter, monument dealer, post office employee, wood cutter, gold miner, hardware salesman and piano tuner. He had at least one US patent issued to him just after leaving Tennessee for Poteau, Oklahoma, in 1908. This was for an adjustable wrench very much like the ones we use today. (US patent No. 877,763.) He had a second patent issued for a bank safety check draft cutter in 1913, while still residing in Poteau. (US patent No. 1,069,534.) It is said he had a third patent for a rural mailbox. That patent has not been found by this writer.
