John W. Turner Biography & Photo
John W. Turner (1865-1915)
Publisher of the Hohenwald Star Newspaper
John W. Turner, along with his wife Mollie Gobelet Turner and son Glen Turner, published the Hohenwald Star and Linden Mail newspapers. Having published the Linden Mail nearly twenty years, the Turners moved to Hohenwald and began publishing their second paper. The paper cost $1.00 a year. After living in Hohenwald and publishing the Hohenwald Star around a year, Mr. Turner became ill.
He thought that if the family moved to a dryer climate maybe his health would improve. They intended to go to Oklahoma. But while visiting a brother in Arkansas Mr. Turner was talked into buying a paper there. His health continued to decline until he knew he wouldn’t survive. He told his family he wanted to return to Hohenwald and be buried in Swiss Cemetery as it was well cared for. The family moved back to Hohenwald and Mr. Turner passed away in 1915 and is buried in lot number 10 near the original entrance to the older section of the cemetery. Mollie G., 1873 – 1937, and son Glenn R., 1892 – 1946, are buried beside him.
