List of Delinquent Poll Tax in 1842 for Lawrence County, Tennessee, presented by John Fondren, Sheriff, for the January term of Court in 1843. Copies can be ordered from the Lawrence County Archives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

[Note<\/b>: A poll tax was levied on every male person in a household of legal voting age of 21.\u00a0 If the poll tax was not paid, then the person could not vote.\u00a0 In many areas, the money generated from this was used for school funds. Order of information listed is name, status, number of people, amount of tax.\u00a0 Most of the status info in parenthesis is easily understood, but incase you are not familiar with words used in old documents, Do means ditto.]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
