\"Location<\/p>\r\n

Lawrence County has a rich history as an early migration point for families and individuals moving Westward.  Lawrence is located in Middle Tennessee, one of the state’s three “grand divisions.”   The county seat is Lawrenceburg, but several other towns developed as a result of railroad, industry, and river transportation.<\/p>\r\n

Lawrence County was named in honor of Captain James Lawrence (1781-1813), commander of the USS Chesapeake<\/em> in a battle with the British Royal Navy frigate HMS Shannon<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n

Lawrence County was formed October 21, 1817, from Hickman and Maury Counties and ceded territory from the Treaty of 1816<\/a> with the Chickasaw.  Neighboring Tennessee counties are Giles<\/a>, Lewis<\/a>, Maury<\/a>, and Wayne<\/a>.  Neighboring Alabama counties are Lauderdale and Limestone.<\/p>\r\n
