Thompson<\/strong> was born in Carroll County, December 2, 1834, and is the<br \/>\nfourth child of a family of two sons and six daughters born to Samuel W. and<br \/>\nMatilda P. (Copeland) Thompson, and is of Irish descent. His father was born<br \/>\nin East Tennessee, and came with his parents to the western part of the state<br \/>\nwhen eighteen years of age. He was married in Maury County, Tenn., and<br \/>\nsettled in Carroll County, living there until 1842, when he moved to Giles<br \/>\nCounty, where he died in 1845. The mother was born in Maury County, Tenn.,<br \/>\nMay 23, 1808, and was the first female white child born south of Duck River.<br \/>\nShe died at Campbellsville, Giles County, July 16, 1884. Our subject was<br \/>\npartly raised on the farm, received a good education, and has made saw-milling<br \/>\nhis chief business. Mr. Thompson enlisted in the Confederate Army, and<br \/>\nbelonged to Company B, Third Tennessee Infantry, under Col. Harvey Walker, and<br \/>\nwas at the engagements at Vicksburg, the bombardment of Port Hudson, and the<br \/>\nbattle of Raymond, Miss. After a year&#8217;s service he was released on account of<br \/>\ndisability. Mr. Thompson was married in Giles County, April 27, 1854, to Miss<br \/>\nLucy A. Harris, a daughter of George B. Harris, a prominent farmer. She was<br \/>\nborn in Maury County, Tenn., June 17, 1833. Three sons and four daughters<br \/>\nwere born to them &#8212; six are living: George S., William W., Albert N., Fannie<br \/>\nI., Susie and Rosalie. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson and two daughters are members of<br \/>\nthe Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He is a Democrat, strongly advocating<br \/>\ntemperance.
