M."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>S. M. Roy<\/strong>, a merchant of Henning, Tenn., is the son of Jerome and Mary<br \/>\n(Davenport) Roy. The father was born in Georgia, February 15, 1818, and the<br \/>\nmother in Newbern District, S. C., January 15, 1820. They were married in<br \/>\n1839, and soon afterward moved to Lauderdale County, Tenn. They had three<br \/>\nsons and two daughters; one of each is dead. They are both living in<br \/>\nLauderdale County, where Mr. Roy, Sr., is engaged in farming. In politics he<br \/>\nis a Democrat. Neither of them is connected with any church. Our subject is<br \/>\nof French descent on the father&#8217;s side, and Scotch-Irish on the mother&#8217;s. He<br \/>\nwas born in Choctaw County, Miss., June 1, 1845, and was raised on a farm with<br \/>\nfew educational advantages. In 1863 he enlisted in Company A., Fifteenth<br \/>\nTennessee Cavalry Volunteers, afterward known as Nixon&#8217;s Cavalry, and served<br \/>\nuntil the close of the war, when he returned to Lauderdale County and engaged<br \/>\nin farming and merchandising. January 14, 1868, he was married to Amanda<br \/>\nCobb, who was born in the county September 24, 1850. A son and three<br \/>\ndaughters were born to this marriage; the son died. Mrs. Roy died September<br \/>\n24, 1874, and December 14, 1876, Mr. Roy married Ellen Pipkin, who was born in<br \/>\nMississippi, September 29, 1854, and by this marriage he had six children &#8212;<br \/>\ntwo boys and four girls; one of them died. Mr. and Mrs. Roy are members of<br \/>\nthe Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He is a Mason and belongs, also, to the<br \/>\nK. of H. In politics he is a Democrat.
