Page 1; HIT AND RUN DRIVER Brownsville,November 5–A Circuit Court Jury here
Wednesday,found John CRIBBS,of Dyersburg,46-year-old TBI agent,guilty of
leaving a scene of an accident.His penalty was fixed at 11 months,29 days in
jail,and a $2,500 fine.Mr.CRIBBS was charged with fleeing the scene where
Arthur J.WALTON,70 year old Forked Farmer,was struck by a car near the Forked
Deer School about sundown Sept.4,1957.The elderly man’s leg was so badly
crushed,it had to be amputed.CRIBBS denied being in the vicinity at the time
of the mishap.
CRASH FATAL FOR MRS.WANDLER Mrs.Zelma Mae WANDLER,of Curve,died Sunday in
Campbell’s Clinic,Memphis,Memphis,a week after being injured in a three way
crash on Highway 51.Services were held Monday at Curve Baptist Church,burial
in Oldfield Cemetery in Crockett County.A native of Crockett County,she had
resided in Lauderdale County 25 years.She leaves her husband;one son,David
H.FUSSELL,of Bells; two brothers,Dan VIA,of Bells,and Reddick VIA,of Gleason.
DEATH Services for S.A.(Cap) THOMPSON,farmer of Hurricane Hill,were held
Sunday at Hurricane Hill Methodist Church,burial in Mt.Pleasant
Cemetery.Mr.THOMPSON,70,died Saturday at Lauderdale County Hospital.He leaves
his wife,Mrs.Lelia CHANDLER THOMPSON; two sons,Jesse THOMPSON of Memphis and
Richard A.THOMPSON,of Calera,AL;one daughter,Mrs.Homer STEELMAN,Jr.,of Halls;
six brothers,Wilson THOMPSON,Cliff THOMPSON, Paul THOMPSON and Neal
THOMPSON,all of Ripley;Hugh THOMPSON and Albert THOMPSON,both of Memphis; two
sisters,Mrs.E.C.JOHNSTON and Mrs.Laura REECE,both of Ripley.
NEW YORK WRECK Funeral services mourning Airman Third Class Larry Wayne
COLLINS,Air Force Institute of Technology student at Syracuse,N.Y.,who met
death in an auto accident there Friday night,were held Wednesday at
Mt.Pleasant Methodist Church,burial in church Cemetery.Airman COLLINS,18,was
born in Brownsville and graduated from Ripley High School last spring.In the
class portrait,his photograph was side by side with that of Donald CROOK,son
of Mr.& Mrs.Alvis CROOK,of Lightfoot,who was killed a week before Airman
COLLINS,when his truck overturned near Gates.Airman COLLINS leaves his
mother,Mrs.Willie Mae WIMBERLY,of Ripley.

loved one,Mrs.Cassie Wilson HARGETT,quietly passed away on Nov.1,1958,just
four days before her 79th birthday.The fact that her family,her home,her
relatives,her friends,and her church where she served as Sunday school teacher
for many years made up her whole world,is a glowing tribute to the life she
lived.She leaves her companion,E.D.HARGETT; two daughters,and a son-in-
law,Velora HARGETT, Cleo and Paul McBRIDE; two granddaughters,Mrs.Evelyn
McBRIDE STEWART,of Jackson and Mrs.Martha McBRIDE CORLEW of Nashville; three
great-grandsons; one brother,A.A.WILSON. George,Arthur,Leon,and Lynn
HARGETT,Woodrow WILSON and Leslie HAMBY served as active pallbearers.Honorary
pallbearers were N.N. CALDWELL, E.R. UNDERWOOD, J.E.COOK, Capt.Alex RANNY,
L.A.McBRIDE and Paul WILLIAMS.Her pastor,the Rev.Pittman MARBURY,held memorial
services at New Hope Methodist Church.Interment was in Grace Cemetery. End

Page 1; KILLED BY TRACTOR. The first fatality on a Memphis Expressway project
occurred Tuesday,when an 18-year-old stickpicker,whose parents are Lauderdale
Countians,was run over by a tractor on Highway 51 South at Carleton Road.
Billy Noble GRIGGS was dead when the ambulance arrived with his body at
Methodist Hospital.The driver of the tractor,James R.MASON,43,said he saw the
youth climb on the tractor when he stopped for water. When he started the
machine again,the youth had moved,the driver’s vision was blocked by a raised
shovel.A witness,Don MONTAGUE,51,said the worker was thrown to the ground and
run over.No charges were placed.He leaves his parents,Mr.& Mrs.John GRIGGS of
Fort Pillow; 2 brothers,Jimmy GRIGGS of Memphis and Michael GRIGGS of Fort
Pillow.one sister,Miss Shirley GRIGGS of Fort Pillow.

Friday of last week at Luckett Methodist Church,of which she was a
member,burial in Asbury Cemetery.She was 77 years,died Wednesday in Lauderdale
County Hospital.Her husband,George GUILTNER,died many years ago.She leaves a
son,Franklin GUILTNER of Jonesboro,AR ;two daughters,Mrs.Alice RIGGS of
Yakima,WA and Mrs.Carl Conrad of Luckett; one half-brother,Thomas DUKE of
Ripley;and one half-sister,Mrs.Talmadge CHISHOLM of Arp.

of Jeff WARDLAW,39,negro widower,of College Street,Ripley,Friday of last
week,in the Rodgers Hotel.WARDLAW,employed by Mrs.W.G.CROCKETT for many
years,was shot with a shotgun as he entered a room upstairs.He fell dead on
the stairs.

preparing to request the commitment of James M.CAPES,42-year-old former
Riplian,to Nashville’s Hospital for the Criminal Insane.CAPES,former guard at
Fort Pillow,who with his wife,a beautician,and their four children,aged 7 to
14 years,moved to Memphis from Ripley last summer–has been in Gailor
Psychiatric Hospital since he introduced himself into the investigation of the
October 14th murder of bachelor veterinarian,Dr.Gaynor HENRY.Dr.James A.
TAYLOR,the psychiatric hospital’s superintendent,has reported to Atty.Gen.Phil
Canale that CAPES is insane with a schizophrenic reaction of paranoid type.
