–HENNING–Mr.J.H.POSTON passed away at his home here Tuesday morning,ahortly
after midnight.His death was due to an acute heart attack,which he suffered Saturday
morning,later developing pneumonia.
–SOUTH COAL CREEK–Mrs.Jim LATHAM was taken to Western State Hospital
Saturday.
–ELLIS SCHOOLHOUSE–Mr.Bob ESCUE and family and Mr.& Mrs.Raymond
SAVELY attended the burial of Mrs.Press CALDWELL at Concord Monday.
–MACK–Mr.Norvell JENKINS arm was broken Saturday while trying to crank a tractor.
–MARY’S CHAPEL–Mr.D.A.KLUTTS has returned from a visit with his
daughter,Mrs.M.E.MATTHEWS in Finley.
–LOCAL & PERSONAL–United States Marshel Arthur ROGERS and Deputy Marshel
A.TARWATER and their wives of Memphis,were in Ripley afternoon attending the
funeral services of Mr.J.H.POSTON of Henning.
–KNOB CREEK–An invalid child of Mr.& Mrs.Alec HALL happened to a very painful
accident Sunday,sticking a nail in its head,and is reported in a serious condition.
–CONCORD– Sunday morning at 2 o’clock,death came into the home of
Mr.P.O.GARRETT and claimed for its victim,his wife,Mrs.Irean COFFMAN
GARRETT,and her infant,only just a few hours old.She was 32 years of age and we will
all miss her.She leaves a husband and four children;four brothers; two half-brothers; two
half sisters; and a dear old father.She was laid to rest Monday.
–GATES–Messrs.S.M.COFFMAN, Wesley COFFMAN, T.B.,and A.A. COFFMAN, all
of Memphis,were called here by the death of their sister,Mrs.P.O.GARRETT.
–CONNER–Mrs.Sallie May DUNAVANT is spending this week in Memphis with
Mrs.Ealey MURLEY.

–Mrs.Mary Ann BARFIELD died at her home near Henning Monday at the ripe age of 80
years,She was the widow of the late Frederick BARFIELD.

–LOCAL & PERSONAL–Mr.Dan A.KLUTTS left last week for Detroit,Mich.,to accept
a position.
Mrs.Harris BROWN,of Jackson,has been a guest of Ripley relatives the past week.
Dr.Gaston HARRISON,of Dallas,Texas,arrived Wednesday morning having been called
home by the serious illness of his mother,Mrs.Julia HARRISON,who suffered a third
stroke of paralysis Monday night.Mrs.HARRISON passed away Wednesday
afternoon.Interment was in Grace Cemetery Thursday afternoon,the services being held in
Grace Church at 3 p.m.Mrs.HARRISON was 64 years of age and is survived by two
sons,Floyd HARRISON,of Central,and Dr.Gaston HARRISON,of Dallas;also one
brother,Hon.W.R.MILLER,of Ripley.
Frances,8-year-old daughter of Joe M.TUCKER,had her collar bone broken and also a
small fracture in her right foot at the ankle,and perhaps sustained other injuries Wednesday
morning when she was struck by a Ford car driven by Will LUCAS.The child was playing
behind an ice wagon and ran out in front of the passing car.For fear on internal injuries,the
child was taken to Dr.Campbell’s Clinic in Memphis.
–JUSTICE GREEN’S COURT–Odell HUTCHERSON;public drunkeness,$14.00 and
bound over to Circuit Court under charge of transporting-Bondfixed at $250.
–IN CITY COURT,MAYOR GREEN’S DOCKETT-Odel HUTCHERSON;disorderly
conduct and loitering on streets;fined $31.00. Irene KLUTTS;disorderly conduct and
loitering on streets;fine $15.25.
–KNOB CREEK–Vitilias HUTCHERSON is attending school at Jackson.
Mr.Milton MIDYETT,from near Nankipoo,spent Saturday in the A.J. HUTCHERSON
home.
Mrs.Annie HUTCHERSON was in Dyersburg Tuesday.
–NANKIPOO–Clifford HUTCHERSON,of Union University,has returned home.
Mr.& Mrs.HURD and daughter,Mrs.Louise OLDS and Miss Elsie HUTCHERSON
spent Sunday with Mr.& Mrs.Clyde TILLMAN.
–HENNING–Mr.& Mrs.M.F.SHELTON,of Danville,Ky.,were called here last week by
the death of her grandfather,Mr.J.H.POSTON
(Mr.POSTON was taken ill on Saturday,May 18th,his 71st birthday.He was born in
Brownsville in 1858,the son of the J.L.POSTONs’.In 1878,he married Miss Mary
WILLIAMS of Nut Bush.His children; Mrs.S.H.JOHNSON and
Mrs.R.L.BRANDON,both of Henning;Henry POSTON,of Ashville,NC; Clarence
POSTON,of Jacksonville,Fla.;Lester POSTON,of Troy,TN; and Miss Effie POSTON,of
Cleveland,Ohio.He was Henning Post Master.Burial in Maplewood Cemetery in Ripley.
–WOODVILLE–Mr.Tom SMITH,who lived near Toulon,was struck bt lightening
Saturday while plowing and died Sunday night.His remains were buried Tuesday in
Woodville Cemetery.He was about 50 years of age,and is survived by widow,several
children,his mother,sisters and brothers ,one of which is Carl SMITH,of Ripley.
–FLIPPEN–Mrs.Odell HUTCHERSON was in Ripley Monday.(to get the old fool out of
jail I guess)
–SUNNY LANE–Mr.& Mrs.John WALDING and two daughters,of Memphis;
Mrs.Addie MIDYETT and children,of Henning Farm,were Sunday guests in the
G.A.CHANDLER home.
–CENTRAL–Mr.J.O.COX and family spent Friday in Memphis.
The Bob NEWMANS’ and the Dewey NEWMANS’,of Memphis,spent Sunday here
with parents.
Mr.R.R.VOSS died at his home last Friday night and was buried at Grace Cemetery
Saturday afternoon.He leaves his wife and seven children.
–DEATH–The Death Angel visited the home of Mr.& Mrs.HENSON at Pleasant Hill last
Friday night,taking one of the most lovable characters in the community.Miss Kittie B.
ALLISON had suffered long from a serious malady.Just six weeks ago,her brother
preceded her to the grave.Her mother and sisters are left to mourn her loss.Her remains
were laid to rest at Poplar Grove Cemetery Saturday afternoon.Born October
17th,1902,died May 23rd,1929.Rev.Jesse A.CROUCH,pastor.
–GOLDDUST–Mr.Walter MUELLER made a business trip to Blytheville,Ark.,one day
last week.
Mrs.Walter MUELLER and children are visiting her parents,Mr.& Mrs.Will NELSON in
Luckett.

–DEATH–Born in Caroline County,Virginia,September 28th,1863,Mrs.Julia Worthum
HARRISON moved to Lauderdale County,Tennessee in 1872.On January 5th,1881,she
was married to William Thomas HARRISON.To this union was born seven children.Her
husband and two children had already gone before her to the Great Beyond.Surviving her
are her brother,W.R.MILLER,of Ripley; five children, Mrs.G.C.WEAVER,
W.F.HARRISON, Mes.Mamie WEBB and Mrs.N.N.CALDWELL,all of Ripley, and
Dr.Gaston HARRISON,of Dallas,Texas.Her body was laid to rest in Grace Cemetery.
–LOCAL & PERSONAL–A son was born Tuesday to Mr.& Mrs.F.L.LEVERETTE and
has been named Flint L. LEVERETTE,Jr.
Mrs.W.D.MEADOWS and son,Verne,after a visit to Mrs.J.W.RAINEY,left for their
home in Paragould,Ark.
Mr.Paul SAVAGE left last Friday night for Chicago,to attend the Radio Manufactures
Association in session there all this week.
–DEATH–In an automobile accident one mile south of Henning Wednesday about 10
o’clock,Mr.Walter LACEY was so badly injured that he died enroute to Memphis.Mr.Will
GARRETT was with Mr.LACEY and was the driver of the Star car which ran off the Jeff
Davis Highway.Mr.GARRETT was arrested and brought to Ripley,charged with driving a
car while intoxicated,and when the trial came up before Justice T.H.GREEN in the
afternoon,asked for a postponement until June 14th,which was granted and his bond was
place at $500.00.Both LACEY and GARRETT formerly resided at Edith in this
county,before moving to Memphis.LACEY is survived by a wife and two children.
–CENTRAL–J.O.COX and family spent Saturday night and Sunday with J.R.COX and
family near Humboldt.
–ASBURY–Mrs.N.J.HENDERSON spent Thursday in Ripley in the home of Mrs.Emma
KLUTTS.
Mesdames Ben McMAHAN and Will BURNS and little son,spent Friday afternoon at
Lightfoot,guests of Mrs.Dupree NELSON.
–ELLIS SCHOOLHOUSE–Mr.MIDYETT and family,of Arp,were Sunday guests in the
Frank SMITH home.
–MACK–The Death Angel visited Mr.Bun MOORE’s home Saturday night and took
away his beloved wife,who had been sick for two weeks.She was buried Sunday afternoon
in Green’s Chapel Cemetery,the services being conducted by Rev.J.A. COUCH.

Ripley,burial in Maplewood Cemetery,last Friday.
–DEATH–Mr.John P.GAUSE died suddenly Tuesday morning at his home in
Mercedes,Texas.He was a native of Lauderdale County,a son of Mr.&
Mrs.T.G.GAUSE,deceased.He resided and practiced law here until 20 years ago.The
remains were laid to rest in Mercedes,Texas.
–ASBURY–Mrs.Tom KLUTTS and little son,Tommy,of Ripley, were guests of the G.W.
BILLINGS’,Monday.
–GOLDDUST–Miss Brooksie METER is on the sick list.
Mr.Robert METER has returned home after two weeks stay at Edith.
–NANKIPOO–Twin sons were born Wednesday to Mr.& Mrs.Robert ETHERIDGE.One
weighed 3 1/2 pounds and the other one weighed 7 pounds.They have been named Eli and
Levi.
–FLIPPEN–Mr.DeWitt KELLEY,33,farmer,who resided near Flippen,while riding a mule
from the field to his noon lunch Monday,was thrown and became entangled in the gear
and was dragged nearly a mile.He died a few hours later.He was unmarried and was living
with his mother,Mrs.Joe F.KELLEY.He leaves two sisters and three brothers.He was
working for Oscar LANGLEY.The remains were laid to rest in Grace Cemetery Tuesday.

week.

home Wednesday afternoon,and the remains were laid to rest in Cross Roads Cemetery.

Edwin, Eugene, and William BOONE,all of Fulton.Ky.,were called here Monday by the
death of their grandfather,Mr.N.L.ROBERTSON.
Mr.N.L. ROBERTSON died suddenly Monday morning at the residence of his
daughter,Mrs.R.W.GHOLSON,with whom he made his home.He was 78 years old the
day before he died.He is survived by his wife,three daughters,Mrs.P.L.STRICKLAND,and
Mrs.Ellis ROUT(?),both of Columbus,Ohio and the above named .Other grandsons
were;Robert Lewis,Cecil and William GRAMMER.Interment was in Gates Cemetery.
–DEATH–Mr.James A.JOHNSON died Tuesday,June 25th,1929.He was a son of the
A.A.JOHNSONS’.He was born at Nut Bush June 24th,1869.He was a member of Ripley
Methodist Church.He married Miss Ida SUMROW 34 years ago,to this union two
children,Mrs.Oma(Elbert) REAMS,of Rosedale,Miss.,and Mr.William JOHNSON,of
Memphis,were born.Also surviving him are five brothers and four sisters;Ben,Earnest,and
Sidney,of Ripley, Ed,of Memphis, And Henry,of Ft.Worth,Texas; Miss Fannie
JOHNSON,of Ripley,Mrs.Sam PUGH,of Memphis, Mrs.James FONDREN,of Forest
City,Ark., and Mrs.Edwin TAYLOR,of Jackson.Interment was in Trinity Cemetery at Nut
Bush.
–BALD KNOB–H.C.WEAVER spent Saturday night with his aunt,Mrs.Mamie

–DEATH–Stricken with appendicitis late Sunday,James Robert
GREGORY,60,prominent lumberman of the tristates,died at 8:45 Wednesday night at the
Methodist Hospital,Memphis>he is survived by his widow,Isella PAYNE GREGORY;
two daughters, Mrs.J.P.SIMS and Miss Marie GREGORY; two sisters,
Mrs.J.D.TARRANT and Miss Fannie GREGORY,all of Memphis.
–DEATH–Mrs.Maggie JACKSON died suddenly Saturday afternoon at the home of
Mrs.J.N.SAMUEL,with whom she lived,her demise being due to a heart attack.For the
past three years,she had resided in Ripley,moving here from the Conner community,where
she spent the greater part of her life.She was a member of the Mary’s Chapel church,and
her remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at that place.Funeral services were held in the
SAMUEL’s home,conducted by Rev.Olin GREEN,pastor Of The Ripley Baptist
Church.Mrs.JACKSON was 51 years of age and is survived by four sons,John, Jake, and
Tom KLUTTS,all of Ripley and Julius KLUTTS,of Vicksburg,Miss.;two brothers,Eugene
and Tom SMITH,of this county; one sister, Mrs.Ed HEATHCOCK,of
Throgmorton,Texas.
–LOCALS & PERSONALS–A son was born July 2nd to the Max DURHAMS’,the news
being received by wire from Hammond,Ind.
Mayor T.H.GREEN and son.Adolphus and Mr.& Mrs.Ophal GREEN attended the
funeral of Mr.N.E.McDEARMAN in Halls Monday.
–HENNING–Mr.& Mrs.W.C.HAYNES were called to Ridgely Monday by the death of
Mr.H.C.HAYNES,father of W.C.,which occurred at the Baptist Hospital in Memphis
Monday morning,where he had been a patient for the past ten days.
–BALD KNOB–Mr.& Mrs.Floyd HERRON,of the Bluff,were Sunday guests of Mr.&
Mrs.George WEAVER.
–DEATH–On the 12th day of June,the Death Angel visited in our home and took away
our darling husband and father,I.W.HAYNES.He was born December 3rd,1869.He leaves
to mourn his departure,his wife and eight children,five girls and three boys.Burial in Enon
Cemetery.
–GATES–A daughter was born June 27th to Mr.& Mrs.A.B.GREEN.She has been
named Betty Lee.

–ADDITIONAL LOCALS–A baby girl,only two or three days old,was found in a briar
thicket about one and one half miles east of Ripley last Friday morning by some persons
picking blackberries.The child was wrapped in an old gunny sack,without any clothing on
it,and bran was all over the little body.No medical attention had been given its advent into
the world,and it was just like it came.It was a normal child and weighed about 8 i/2
pounds,and was cared for by the finders until Saturday when it was brought to the home
of Mr.Beryl GLIMP in Ripley,where she died Monday,and the remains were laid to rest in
the cemetery at the county farm.It is to be hoped that the guilty persons will be
apprehended,and made to pay the penalty of such a diabolical crime.
–DEATH–Mr.Russell KOONCE,who was carried to Memphis Wednesday of last week
for an operation for appendicitis,died at an early hour Monday morning,and the remains
were brought here and later carried to Enon Cemetery near Nankipoo for interment.He
was 27 years of age and had been married seven years.He and his wife were married
through their college years,both were teachers.
–JUDGE GREEN’S COURT–Robert METER,unregistered auto; $9.00.
–GATES–Mr.& Mrs.A.M.SAVAGE and son,A.M.Jr.,of Memphis,were guests of
parents,Mr.& Mrs. M.W.SAVAGE on the 4th.A.M.Jr.,remained for the rest of the
summer.
–HENNING–Mr.Jim ADAMS,of Halls,whose death occurred at Methodist
Hospital,Memphis,on Wednesday of last week,was buried at Poplar Grove Cemetery
Thursday afternoon.Besides his widow and one daughter,he leaves his father,
C.C.ADAMS; two sisters, Mrs.Tom CHEAIRS,of Memphis and Mrs.S.L.THUM,of this
place.

–DEATH–The passing away of Mrs.Maggie A.MOORE on Monday at the home of her
daughter,Mrs.B.P. BLACK in Hichman,Ky.,occasioned muach sadness.She had lived two
years previously with her daughter,Mrs.J.D.McLEOD in Ripley.The remains were brought
to Ripley ,arriving here about 2:15 p.m. and from here carried to Holmes graveyard near
Durhamville and laid to rest by her beloved husband,George A.MOORE,who passed away
28 years ago.She was born 24th November 1848,in Ky.,the daughter of Henry & Mary
POTTER.
–MARY’S CHAPEL–Mr.John E.CRAIG and family of Ripley,were in the H.J.MANESS
home Sunday afternoon.
Mrs.James KLUTTS and daughter,spent Thursday of last week with Mrs.Charles CRAIG
in Ripley.
Herbert,little son of Mr.& Mrs.R.C.CRINER died at his home near Flippen Friday
morning and the remains were brought here and laid to rest.Funeral services were
conducted by Rev.M.F.SAVAGE of Ripley.
–CROSS ROADS–Mrs.COX was called to Flippen by the death of her father,Mr.Lonnie
WHITE.
–CEDAR GROVE–Those on the sick list are;Mr.C.C.HUTCHERSON, Miss Effie
HOEFT, and little Frances Deloach.
Mr.John SAVAGE visited his sister,Mrs.Manson MILLS,near Conner Saturday night
and Sunday.
Mrs.Mary JONES,who has been attending the bedside of her
brother,C.C.HUTCHERSON,whose condition is no better,returned to her home in
Fulton,Ky.,Thursday.
–HALESPOINT–Many friends were saddened by the death of Mrs.Raymond
WOODARD,which occurred Sunday night.The remains were laid to rest Monday
afternoon at Edith.
–WHITEFIELD–Alittle child of Mr.& Mrs.Bob CRINER,died last Friday and was buried
at Mary’s Chapel.
–ELLIS SCHOOLHOUSE–Little Charlie Frank SMITH and Wesley LEGGETTE,Jr.,are
seriously ill with colitis.

Mr.H.C.POINDEXTER,66 years of age,died at his home near Ripley Tuesday
night.After funeral services at the residence Wednesday afternoon,conducted by
Rev.M.F.SAVAGE,the remains were laid to rest in Mary’s Chapel Cemetery.

–IN MEMORIAM–Lucy Quarles ESTES,born July 16th,1845,was the daughter of
Moreau Pinkney ESTES and Mary NOEL,whose parents were of Virginia ancestors.They
moved to Haywood County in 1822.At the close of the Civil War,she was married to her
childhood lover,the gallant young Confederate soldier,C.S.O.RICE,of SC ancestry,the son
of Shadrach RICE and Louisa LINERIEUX RICE. Twelve children were born to C.S.O.
and Lucie RICE in the home they established sixty-four years ago.On July 22nd,1929,after
the celebration of her 84th birthday,she was buried in St.Paul Cemetery.
–HENNING–Mr.C.D. SMITH oassed away at 2:30 p.m. Monday at his home about two
miles east of Henning,after an illness of two weeks.Interment was Tuesday in Bethlehem
Cemetery,a widow;three married daughters and two sons are left to greive.
–IN MEMORY–Little Corras Odeen MATHIS was born July 23rd,1928 and departed
this life July 16th,1929–Rest in perfect peace and Grandma, Mother and Daddy will meet
you in the sweet bye and bye.

months,and twenty-five days old.

–LOCAL 7 PERSONAL–Mr.C.M.METER had his first and third fingers on his right
hand cut off between the tip and the first joint Wednesday by a circular saw in the
C.C.ANDERSON mill at Ashport.
–MACK–Major Mark WALKER,of Covington,attended the funeral of little Mamie
REED Sunday.The child went in the Hatchie River,bathing Saturday afternoon and was
drowned about 5 o’clock.The remains were laid to rest in Green’s Chapel
Cemetery.Rev.J.A.CROUCH conducted services.
–DEATH–Many hearts were saddened on Thursday afternoon of last week when the
announcement was made that Rev.W.F.BARRIER had passed away at his home in
Ripley.Rev.BARRIER was born in Madison County,near Denmark,Tennessee
Oct.?,1848.He was married to Miss Emma Alice EDWARDS on May 23,1873.To this
union five children were born,one son,who was preparing for the ministry,preceded him in
death several years ago.He is survived by his wife and four children, Dr.W.F.
BARRIER,Jr.,of Malvern,Ark.,Mrs.Rufus BRANCH,of Pecan Point,Ark.,Mrs.Frank
REAVES,of Hornbeak,Tenn.,and Mrs.J.A.HUTCHESON,of Ripley.Interment was in
Maplewood Cemetery.

her neice,Mrs.Myrtle ALLEN MINTER,at her home in St.Louis.
–DEATH OF A LITTLE CHILD–Monday,August 12th,just as the sun was sinking in the
far off West,the spirit of little Georgie Lee HUTCHERSON took its homeward flight to
the great beyond.He had been sick the past eight weeks and on Sunday night,developed
pneumonis,which hastened the end.
He was the son of Mr.& Mrs.Odell HUTCHERSON,and besides his parents;leaves to
mourn his going away,two sisters and two brothers.He will be greatly missedin the home
here,but he has gone to the home not made by hands.We must not think of him as
dead,but only sleeping. Georgie Lee was born March 22nd.1928.His remains were laid to
rest in Prospect Cemetery,funeral services conducted by Rev.M.F.SAVAGE,of Ripley.

–DEATH–The death of Calvin CONNER Sr.,at his home in Memphis on Friday evening
at 7 o’clock,brought sadness to many homes in Lauderdale County.The remains were
brought to Ripley Friday night by Burgess & Peters and lay in state in their funeral parlor
until 3 p.m. Sunday.Mr.CONNER was a son of the late John CONNER Sr.,and was born
May 24,1872 at Ashport.Surviving are his widow,Helen OLDHAM CONNER;
sons,Calvin,Jr.,Gerald and James Oldman CONNER.He was a brother to John Verser
CONNER,of Russellville,Ky.,and Mrs.W.H.WHITE of Ripley.
–DEATH–Mr.W.M.MORRIS died Saturday at his home near Arp,and the funeral
services were held Sunday morning.He was born December 1st,1851.His first wife was
Fannie A. BIBB,of Osceola,Ark.,the daughter of Rev.George J.BIBB.They were married
Nov.2,1876 and had seven children,surviving are Mrs.J.H.LEWIS and Mrs
A.E.GRAMMER,of Memphis;Mrs.Vera HALE,of Center,Texas; Mrs.Otie HAMBY and
John M.MORRIS,of Ripley;George J.MORRIS died Nov.12,1886 and Wm.H.MORRIS
died Jan.20,1904.His second wife was Ida EVANS,he married her May 22,1907.Their one
child,James Lee was born Sept.18,1908 and died Feb.27,1910.On August 5,1910,he was
married to Mollie BENNETT,of Humboldt,who survives him.

Rev.W.E.HUGHES.She was in her 61st year.
Mr.Owen DAVIS was called to Winona,Miss.,Wednesday by the death of his
nephew,Mr.James OLIVER.Mr.OLIVER was well known in Ripley,having been
connected with the Jefferson Davis Hotel for sometime.
Mr.DAVIS was accompanied home by his sister,Miss Ada DAVIS.
Mrs.W.W.CRAIG attended the funeral of Mary Elizabeth THOMAS in Galloway Friday
afternoon.She was the daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Frank THOMAS,Mrs.THOMAS being the
former Miss Jama DUNCAN,teacher of music in Ripley High School several years ago.
Burgess & Peters,local undertakers,were called to Dyersburg Monday to convey the
remains of Miss Adelle LACY to Memphis.The little girl,who was 13 years of age,fell
from the running board of a car at Fowkles Sunday afternoon and died in Dyersburg
hospital Monday.She was the daughter of Mrs.Walter LACY.It will be remembered her
father was killed last June in an automobile wreck a few miles south of Henning.
Mrs.Ora ROBERTS,wife of Mr.Will ROBERTS,who resided near Woodville,was
carried to Baptist Hospital,Memphis,in a Burgess & Peters ambulance.She died the
followind afternoon and her remains were carried to Palestine in Dyer County and interred
Sunday.She was 42 years of age and is survived by her husband and four children.

Mississippi bottom,was killed by a falling tree Friday and was buried in Mt.Pleasant
Cemetery Saturday afternoon.He was 23 years of age.
Mr.J.M.STEVENS died of heart failure Monday at his home in Ripley and after funeral
services in the home Tuesday morning,the remains were taken to Jackson for interment.He
was 49 years of age and is survived by his wife and a married daughter.He was employed
in the Ripley Post Office.

Mr.& Mrs.W.J.TRIPPE and claimed for his own,their little grandson,Roy Franklin
SMITH.Little Roy was born in the home of Mr.& Mrs.Joe M.SMITH on September
2nd,1928 and on September 11th,1928,God came to their home and claimed his mother
and carried her to her heavenly home.little Roy was carried to the home of his

durhamville by two heavily laden gravel trucks early Monday
night,Mr.BACHELOR,35,and Mr.SANDERS,29,were sent to Baptist Hospital in
Memphis.Mr.BACHELOR’s left foot was so badly crushed that doctors were forced to
remove it.He also received internal injuries.
–CEDAR GROVE–Mrs.C.C.HUTCHERSON and children spent Sunday with her
daughter,Mrs.Ernest ROBBINS,of Coal Creek.
–MARY’S CHAPEL–Little Val Craig MANESS was quite sick several days last week.

in Memphis Tuesday night from a fall at Horn Lake,Miss.,nine days ago.Mr.JOHNSON
was in Horn Lake assisting Rev.Wes STOKES of Curve,Tenn.,in a revival meeting.His hip
was broken when he fell off a porch at the Horn Lake Church.Mr.JOHNSON had been a
resident of Brownsville for a number of years.Survived by his wife,Mollie JOHNSON;
son,Colon JOHNSON,of Cookville and Mrs.N.DANIEL,of Brownsville.Burial in Concord
Cemetery.
–DEATH–Joseph H.MARTIN,53,son of Rev.George H.MARTIN,pastor of the First
Methodist Church in Memphis,died at Baptist Hospital shortly before midnight Sunday
from injuries received a few hours earlier in a crash between his car and one driven by

skull,internal injuries and a fractured arm.He was thrown from his car when sideswiped by
young OVERTON. MARTINhad been a Memphis resident for 27 years.He leaves his
parents; five brothers, H.W.,T.H.,A.M.,G.B.,and R.M.MARTIN,all of Memphis and one
sister,Mrs.T.S.McFERRIN,also of Memphis.
–DEATH–Mr.B.S.MORRIS died at his home on Ashport Street,September
12th,1929.He was born in Darlington,S.C. on November 23rd,1857.He was a son of
Lieut.J.M.& Rebecca MORRIS.He lost his father early in the Civil War,and whose
remains were laid to rest in the Confederate Cemetery in Richmond,VA.After his father’s
death,his mother moved to Lauderdale County,Tenn.;where her father,S.D.JENKINS was
residing.Mr.MORRIS was married to Miss Sarah E.WEBB on DEcember 4th,1879.To
this union were born nine children,five of whom preceded him in death.He leaves his
wife,three daughters and one son;Mrs.C.T.AUSTIN,Mrs.J.B.HUNTER and
J.S.MORRIS,all of Ripley and Mrs.H.C.D.MORRIS,of Timmonsville,S.C. Also a
brother,J.G.MORRIS of Ripley.
–GOLDDUST–Mr.Robert METER,of Blytheville,Ark.,spent the week-end here with
homefolks.
–KNOB CREEK–Miss Bertha Vay HUTCHERSON visited her brother in Memphis
several days last week.
Mrs.Lester BURKS of Memphis,spent Saturday night with her parents,Mr.&
Mrs.A.J.HUTCHERSON and was accompanied home by her mother and brother
Hannah,who were going doen for a treatment at a hospital.
–CURVE–The funeral of R.J.SUTTON,who died Monday in a Memphis Hospital,was
held in the Christian Church here Tuesday afternoon.He was 56 years of age and is
survived by his widow and the following children;Mrs.Russell ROSE, and Mr.Edwin
SUTTON,both of Ripley, Harry SUTTON,of Nashville, Misses Eddie Mae SUTTON and
Juanita SUTTON.The remaions were laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery.

–KILLED–The news of the sad accident causing the death of Thomas ADDISON,68
years,a well known sawmill man,at 8 a.m.this morning.He was engaged in his daily duties
at his sawmill on Cane Creek in Lauderdale Couty,near Pilljerk,when he was struck by a
plank from the saw.This threw him against the drive wheel and his skull was
crushed.Death was instantaneous.He is survived by his wife,Fannie ADDISON; sons,Artie
and W.T.ADDISON; daughters. Mrs.S.E.BRINGLE and Mrs.A.B.TORRENCE,the latter
of Indianapolis,Ind.Burial was in Covington

Tuesday night and was buried Wednesday at Arp.

Ashport Bluff,died Monday and was buried Tuesday at Cross Roads.He was 55 years of
age.
John KLUTTS attended the World Series in Chicago Tuesday and Wednesday.The
Philadelphia Athletics won both games from the Chicago Cubs;3-1, and 9-3.
Mr.& Mrs.Henry LUTON now have rooms with Mrs.Octavia SAMUEL and the

–CURVE–The body of Mr.Eldred MEACHAM was brought from Ashport Bluff
Tuesday and buried in Cross Roads Cemetery.He leaves a wife and several children,his

After months of intense suffering,Mr.Clode THOMPSON died Saturday morning and
was laid to rest Sunday in Grace Cemetery.Mr.THOMPSON was about 60 years of age
and had seen most of his life here.he leaves a wife; sons, Horace, Oakley, and John; a
daughter,Mrs.Andrew Manning; all of Curve,to mourn his passing.Also his two

WEdnesday afternoon,the services being held in Woodville Church.
–JOHN E.CRAIG PASSES AWAY–He was the son of Ed & Piercy CRAIG.he served in
WWI,spending two years in France.In 1921 he was married to Miss Hilda MAJORS,and is
survived by his widow and two children,John Edward,Jr.,and Frances.He is also survived
by his mother; sisters, Mrs.H.J.MANESS and Mrs.James KLUTTS; and brothers,Charles
R.CRAIG and James Porter CRAIG,all from here except the latter,he is living in
Mobile,Ala.He was born December 5,1892,he died October 8th,after having been stricken
at his place of business.he underwent an operation for constricted gall bladder due to
adhesion.He seemed to be recovering but his condition became worse and he past
away.Interment in Maplewood Cemetery.
–TRIBUTE TO ROBERT JOSEPH SUTTON–He was the son of Logan & Mary
WILLIAMS SUTTON.He was born October 12th,1873,he was married to Lois Mary
GRIFFEN on November 14th,1894 and to this union were born seven children;Lyda
Lee(Mrs.THOMPSON) and Utran,the oldest children,departed from this life shortly after
reaching adulthood.His widow;and children, Mrs.Lena(Robert)ROSE, Harry, Edward,
Mary, and Juanita SUTTON; sisters, Mrs.R.H.FERGUSON, Mrs.John SPEIGH,
Mrs.Spencer Tree WALLER; and his brother.C.W.SUTTON,survive him.The remains
were laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery.

illness of several months.she was 69 years of age.besides her husband,she is survived by

–ASBURY–The entire community was saddened Monday by the death of Miss Lillie
BRADEN,who had been sick only a few days with a complication of diseases.She was laid

his home for two weeks with a sore limb.

home the past two weeks because of illness.
Mrs.Clifton WOOD has the sympathy of many friends in the death of her

–DEATH–Mrs.Ella PIERSON,after an illness of only two weeks of typhoid fever
pneumonia and complications,passed away at the home of her daughter,Mrs.Sanford
DRAKE shortly after noon Monday.Her maiden name was Miss Ella JONES,born in this
county on August 9,1857.she was married in 1880 to Hon.Blair PIERSON,who presided
her in death some 21 years.The remains were laid to rest in Maplewood Cem. Six children
survive:J.E.PIERSON, Mrs.Sanford DRAKE and Mrs.B.C.DURHAM Jr.,all of Ripley,
Mrs.Lucy P.EWING and J.B.PIERSON,both of Memphis,and Mrs.Fay TUCKER,of New
York City.
–LOCAL AND PERSONAL–A son was born November 29th to the
J.A.McMAHANS.He was christened Milton Fredrick McMAHAN.
Frances Louise CROWDER,age 13 months,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Monroe CROWDER
died Tuesday night of spinal miningitis,following two weeks illness with the flu.The
remains were laid to rest in Mary’s Chapel Cemetery Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs.H.F. ROSS died at her home near Ripley Tuesday of apoplexy.The remains were
carried to Newbern for interment.Mrs ROSS had lived near Ripley several years,her
husband having charge of the singal service on the I.C.Railroad before moving to his farm
near Ripley She was in her 55th year.
–LUCKETT–Misses Margaret and Emily NELSON and Mr.William NELSON spent
Saturday night with their sister,Mrs.Dee YOCKUM,of Golddust.

–SON KILLED FATHER–Early Tuesday night,Odell ARNOLD shot and killed his
father,Harden ARNOLD,at the farm home near Millington.Young ARNOLD was arrested
and placed in the Shelby County jail.While admitting that he and his father quarreled,yet he
claims the killing was accidental.ARNOLD is survived by his wife and eight children.They
formerly lived near Ripley,having moved to Millington two years ago.The remains of the
deceased were buried Wednesday in Henning.
–CENTRAL–Mrs.James COX and family and Mr.& Mrs.James Cox,Jr.,of
Memphis,visited relatives here Sunday.
