KILLED BY DAUGHTER’S SUITOR–Because Sam TURNER, 47, residing in the Conner community, east of Ripley, objected to Marks HIGHTOWER,19, going with his daughter, Margaret, 16, the two men became involved in a fight in the road near the Frank HOLCOMB home Sunday afternoon. Gus SPILLER and Aaron KIRBY, neighbors, separated them. TURNER, it is said returned to his home and according to a statement by HIGHTOWER, procured a shotgun and came to the home of Frank HOLCOMB where HIGHTOWER had stopped, approaching from the rear of the house and opening fire, discharging five loads at HIGHTOWER, one peppering his arm and one taking effect in the right foot. He is not seriously injured. After TURNER had emptied the gun of five charges, HIGHTOWER wrenched the gun from his assailant, striking TURNER on the back of the head, breaking his neck, producing almost instant death. HIGHTOWER was brought to Ripley by Sheriff J.T. COUGHLAN; Deputies C.A. BORDERS and Blake ACUFF and placed in jail. At the hearing Tuesday before Justice F.A. HENRY, HIGHTOWER was released. J.E. STEWART, J.E. HOLCOMB, Wilbur HOLCOMB, Robert KIRKESS and Gus SPILLER are said to have been eye witnesses to the killing.
