Mattie Mae Smith
Mattie Mae Smith;daughter of Henry Smith & Lucy Jane Maxwell.Born
Feb.19,1899 died May 26,1956.Mattie was married to Willie Midyett at a
very young age in 1913.Mother of his children,Lorene Estelle Midyett and
Freeman Odolph Midyett.She was a widow in 1925 at the age of 26 years
with two young children.Mattie married Gus L.Fitzgerald in
Nov.1928.Their only child,Mary Louise Fitzgerald,was born
Apr.11,1931.Mary died of Colitis Aug.17,1932.Another tragedy for a young
woman to deal with.Mattie and Gus took into their home to raise,a 16
month old girl in 1939,Mattie's granddaughter.Again Mattie faced a
painful loss when in 1948,her marriage to Gus ended in divorce.They did
remain friends until her death.Mattie was married to John C. Nelson at
the time of her death.I remember best the smile of the grandmother I
