Eli Zebulon Martin
Eli Zebulon Martin was born in 1851 to Lucinda Shoemake and Zebulon Martin. He was raised by step-father W. A. Mahan after the
death of his father, and mother Lucinda's remarriage, across the river from Lauderdale County, in Mississippi County, Arkansas
before returning to Tennessee as a young man to work and soon marry Ellen Louise Willliams of Ripley. Schooled in business, he
was a haberdasher and dry goods merchant and traveling salesman throughout western Tennessee. He raised plantation ponies
part time on his Henning farm. He was father to four daughters, Beulah, Lillias, Albertha and Juanita and one son, Eli Van Louis
Martin. Another son died in infancy.
He died at Baptist Hospital in Memphis in 1919, and is buried at Maplewood Cemetery in Ripley, Tennessee.© 2001 Cher Haile
