Ellen Louise Williams Martin
Ellen Louise Williams Martin at home in Ripley, Tennessee. Ellen was one of the nine David and Elvyann Williams children, and
was born in 1855. She married Eli Martin in a May Day celebration in 1878. Eventual mother to five children who survived into
adulthood, she spent her time between her home in Ripley (shown here) and her husband's farm in Henning. An avid gardener, she
is often photographed among her gardens. Known universally as Mama and Papa Martin, they were very active in community,
church and social affairs in Lauderdale County. Her brother Robert A. Williams was three times elected Mayor of Ripley. She died
suddenly of a stroke in 1915, and is buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Ripley.© 2001 Cher Haile
