THE LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE, FRIDAY JANUARY 1, 1932

The sudden death of Mrs. Mildred CAMPBELL in Memphis on December 23rd was a shock to her loved ones and friends in Lauderdale County. She was the widow of the late C. M. CAMPBELL, of Dry Hill, and it was in this county that she had spent the greater portion of her long and happy life, and her friends were many. It was not until the death of her husband some three years ago that she moved to Memphis. She was a Virginian by birth, from Richmond, her maiden name was Mildred SAUNDERS. She was only one year old when she came with her parents to Tennessee, and only two sisters are living, both of whom reside in San Antonio, Texas; Mrs. John MOORE and Mrs. Eva KING. On May 4, 1873, she was married to Mr. CAMPBELL and eight children survive: Mrs. Julian SUTTON, and Mrs. E. C. OWEN, both of Curve, Will CAMPBELL, of Dry Hill; Mrs. W. C. DELOACH, of Ripley, Mrs. Will HARTMAN, of Gates, C. E. CAMPBELL, Mrs. W. T. GREEN and Miss Bruce CAMPBELL, all of Memphis. The remains were brought to the home of her daughter in Gates on Wednesday, and the following day; Christmas Eve, were laid to rest in the cemetery at that place.

TWO MEN ARRESTED AS THREE DIE IN FIRE--Excitment ran high Saturday when news spread that the bodies of Mrs. Mary MOORE and her two children by a former marriage, Frances GRIGSBY, 15, and Roy GRIGSBY, 13, were found in the ruins of their modest little home near Curve. Upon investigation by Sheriff COUGHLAN and his deputies, evidence showed that the trio had been brutally murdered and the home set on fire to cover up the diabolical crime. The bodies of all three were badly burned, all showing signs of having received a heavy blow on the head. The mattress of the bed on which Mrs. MOORE slept with her son, was not entirely burned, and it is said to have been soaked with blood. Sheriff COUGHLAN went to work on the case like a veteran detective, and within a few hours, had arrested Jim MOORE, husband of the dead woman, who was at the home of his son, Albert MOORE, and also arrested Albert MOORE and his pal, Harrison YON. Jim MOORE, after being questioned was released, having established his whereabouts Friday night to the satisfaction of the officers. Harrison YON and Albert MOORE, the latter the step-son of the dead woman, were questioned Saturday night by Attorney General George C. WATKINS. MOORE's overalls and jumper had holes burned in them, which he claims were burned while out hunting. There were also stains on the garments which might be blood stains. The garments were sent to Memphis for a chemical test of the stains. MOORE is a man about 35 years of age and the father of children. His home is about 12 miles distant from the burned house. Both the attorney general and sheriff firmly believe that the woman and two children were murdered. Albert Moore is in jail here and YON is held in the Covington jail. Sheriff COUGHLAN said Lloyd MOORE told him that Albert had told him he would get rid of them if he had to burn the bodies. The funeral of the three were held Sunday afternoon at Mary's Chapel, four miles distant from the scene of the tragedy.

This entire section of the county was dreadfully shocked on last Saturday evening, December 26th to learn of the sudden death of Mr. Herbert M. JOHNSTON, which occured on that afternoon at his home six miles east of Woodville. On the morning of his death, Mrs. JOHNSTON and their two daughters went down to Baton Rouge for the day and Mr. JOHNSTON had drove over to Centerville, returning about noon. He complained to a friend that he was not feeling well and so evidently after attending to certain things around the home, he went to bed in the early afternoon. Here he was found when his wife and daughters returned. Physicians were summoned and they pronounced him dead due to natural causes, death having come to him without a struggle. The funeral services, which were held at the home at 4 0'clock and conducted by Rev. M. M. BLANK, of the Woodville Methodist Church, his remains were interred in Evergreen Cemetery at Woodville. Mr. JOHNSTON was born in Ripley, Tenn., on June 22, 1879. After attending schools in that town, he engaged in the mecantile business and in farming for several years. DEATH-- In the afternoon at 2 o'clock on Monday, the auditorium of the Methodist church was taxed to its capacity with friends and loved ones who had gathered to pay a last tribute of respect to the passing of one of Ripley's dearest and sweetest young mothers, Mrs. Mary Virginia Windrow MARKS. Sad indeed, was the untimely death of this good woman. On Thursday afternoon of last week, February 18, she was suddenly stricken just as she arrived home from a meeting of the Parent-Teacher Association, and her attending physicians, realizing the seriousness of her condition, saw that an immediate operation was necessary, if her life was to be saved, and she was carried to the Brownsville Hospital. The husband, T. V. (Jack) MARKS, who was in Birmingham, Ala., was communicated with and at his request Dr. Eugene JOHNSON, of Memphis was called and performed the operation a few hours later, for an internal hemorrhage. The depleted condition of her system from loss of blood, rendered her an easy prey to pneumonia which developed Saturday night, and at 9 o'clock Sunday morning, the hour when she would have been going to the Ripley Methodist Church to teach her Sunday school class, her sweet spirit took its flight to the heavenly home. It was also in this church, on June 7, 1923, that she and Mr. MARKS were married, and how appropriate it was that her remains should be brought back to the place she so loved and where those sacred vows had been pledged. Two bright, beautiful children had blessed union; Mary Jack MARKS, aged seven years and Thomas Windrow MARKS, almost two years. Mrs. MARKS was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Frank WINDROW, and had just passed her 35th birthday, being born February 10, 1897.
