E. R. ANTHONY Dead---The sudden death of E. R. Anthony, which occurred at his home near Durhamville,
Wednesday morning, brought great sorrow to his numerous friends. Mr. Anthony had just returned
from one of his farms and upon arriving home, complained of being sick. He was placed on his
bed and medical aid summoned. Death came within 30 minutes after the heart attack. Deceased
was owner of the firm of E. R. Anthony at Durhamville, where for 35 or 40 years, he had been
engaged in the mercantile business. He owned several large tracts of land and was one of Lauderdale's
largest planters. He was born in 1854 and had lived in Lauderdale County all his life. He was
married in 1886 to Miss Eddie Jones, and to this union six children were born, five of whom
survive; Dr. D. H. Anthony of Memphis, Mrs. Alex Williamson of Memphis, Mrs. Dick Smith of Jackson,
Mrs. Norma Fisher of Durhamville and Mr. E. T. Anthony of Ripley. He is also survived by his
wife and three brothers; Gus Anthony of Orysa, A. S. Anthony of Ripley, and Chas. Anthony of
Henning: and one sister, Mrs. L. C. Moorer of Jackson, MS. The funeral will be held this afternoon
at 2 o'clock at St. Paul's Cemetery.

Sidney Carns Anthony, Jr., 87, of Ripley,
died Thursday of last week in Baptist Hospital Lauderdale. Masonic rites were Monday in the
cemetery of St. Paul United Methodist Church at Durhamville, Gardner Funeral Home, of Sharon,
in charge. He was a 50-year member of Ripley’s Masonic Lodge. He was born at Orysa, Dec.
15, 1919, to the late Sidney and Miriam Turner Anthony. The family moved to Henning in 1929.
“Tony” was graduated from Ripley High School in 1938. He worked for Stratton-Warren
in Memphis before joining the Army in 1939. He retired from the Air Corps as a chief warrant
officer, after six years of service in Florida, the Philippines, and New Guinea, where he met
his bride, Maunena Zimmerman. After military service, they resided briefly in Henning, before
moving to Olympia, Wash., where Mr. Anthony was employed by Weyhauser and, later, by the state
highway department, from which he retired in 1970. He also taught welding and mechanics in the
Olympia Community College. Maunera died in 1992. In 1993, he married Kathryn Estes Nix and moved
to Ripley. He leaves his wife; sons, Michael, of Anchorage, Alaska, and William, of Arlington,
Va.; a brother, Robert Pickett Anthony, of Panama City, Fla.; and a grandson.

The remains of Mrs. Lennie R. Blackwell, wife of A.P. Blackwell, arrived in Ripley Wednesday
from Durant, Okla., where she passed away on August 10th. She was laid to rest in St. Paul cemetery
near Durhamville Wednesday afternoon. Her husband accompanied the remains here, they were met
in Memphis by several relatives. Deceased was a daughter of the late C.S.0. Rice, of Orysa,
and was born and reared in that community, where she was held in high esteem and loved by all
who knew her. She had been living in Oklahoma the past few years.

RIPLEY - Dr. Arden J. Butler Jr., 66, physician,
died of cancer Friday at his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Paul Methodist Church
of Ripley, where he was a member, with burial in the church cemetery. Garner Funeral Home here
has charge. He graduated from Byars Hall High School in Covington in 1949 and University of
Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1951, and received his medical degree from University of Tennessee
College for the Health Sciences in 1954. He had served in the Navy and was a member of Alpha
Tau Omega fraternity and Phi Chi medical fraternity. He was in private medical practice in Ripley
from 1958-1996. He was medical director at Cold Creek and West Tennessee High Security Facilities
and at Lauderdale County Justice Center. He also was a member of Northwest Tennessee Medical
Association, American Medical Association, and of Tennessee Medical Association, where he was
past chairman of the board of trustees. He was a member of Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians,
where he was past president in 1982, Physician of the Year in 1988, and had served on numerous
committees. He also was a member of and board certified with the American Acadmey of Family
Physicians. He was the Lauderdale County Jaycees Man of the Year in 1965 and a member of Lauderdale
County Election Commission. He was on the board of trustees of St. Paul Methodist Church, and
was chairman of the building committee there and at First United Methodist Church of Ripley.
Mr. Butler, the husband of Candy Moran Butler, also leaves two daughters, Debbie Cherry of Ripley
and Lou Anne White of Union City; a son, Arden J. Butler III, and a stepson, Tom Patterson,
both of Memphis, and five grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Marion Potter, who lived near Asbury, suffered the loss of their darling baby,
Chas. Monroe Vernon Potter, who was born May 4, 1925 and died Sept. 21, 1926. He suffered only
a few days with colitis. Everything was done that loving hands could do, yet God saw best to
take him. He is survived by his mother, father, three brothers, eight sisters and a host of

Linerieux RICE, a prominent West Tennessee family of pioneer days, was born March 9, 1847 at
"Clifton Hall, "the old ancestral home near Orysa. He had lived in this vicinity all
his life and died April 6, 1932. He was the last member of a family of twelve children. When
the war broke out between the States, he joined the Confederate army at age 16, enlisting in
Co. M, 7th Tenn., Regiment, Forrest's Calvary. He was under age and could have returned home
at the reorganization, but felt it was his duty to fight for his country. At the close of the
war he was paroled at Gainsville, Ala., May 11, 1865. On August 19, 1869, he was married to
Miss Sarah Elizabeth BORUM, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James H. BORUM of Durhamville. They were
the parents of three children, Effie Eloise, who died in infancy, Elmer T. RICE, who died October
15, 1907, and the surviving daughter, Miss Minnie RICE. Mrs. RICE, the devoted wife and mother
passed away January 14, 1923, burial in St. Paul Cemetery. The pallbearers were his nephews.

The remains of MRS. SCOTT, wife of Rev. J. M. Scott, was brought to Ripley From Fulton, KY.,
Monday, and laid to rest in St. Paul's Cemetery in Durhamville.
MARCH 18th, 1898
Mr. J. M. Scott, editor of Ridgely Banner, died very
suddenly Sunday afternoon near Wynnburg, 5 miles north of Ridgely. Mr. Scott, accompanied by
Prof. Brewer, of Ridgely, was driving after a shower of rain and the car slipped into a ditch.
Parties came and assisted them in pushing the car out of the ditch and as Mr. Scott was getting
into the car, he fell over the steering wheel and died instantly. He is survived by one sister,
Mrs. Lillian Martin, of Memphis. His remains were shipped to Ripley on the 3 o’clock train
and were laid to rest in the St. Paul cemetery Tuesday morning after a brief service at the
grave conducted by Rev. G. Harris.
Mr. Scott was a son of Rev. J.M. Scott, who was pastor of the Ripley Methodist Church several
years a third of a century ago, and those of the family who have passed away sleep in the cemetery
near Durhamville where his body now reposes.

Sidney Samuel Scott of Fulton, KY., died from heart disease at the home of his sister, Mrs.
Lillian Scott Martin of Normal, TN., He became ill several weeks ago in Fulton, KY., but he
gained strength and was sufficiently recovered to visit his sister about a week ago. Soon after
his arrival in Memphis, he was forced to return to bed. He was in the printing business in Fulton
at the time of his death. Prior to that he was a newspaperman working with the Fulton Dailey
Leader, and the Princeton, KY., Leader. He was 62 years of age at the time of his death. He
was born in Durhamville, TN. He was a resident of Fulton for 20 years. He leaves besides his
sister, two brothers; James K. Scott of Ripley and Lucian H. Scott of Pueblo, Colo. The remains
were brought to Ripley Saturday morning and laid to rest in St. Paul Cemetery after funeral

of Joplin, Mo.; two sisters, Lucille Nolan of Carlisle, Ill., and Mary Ann Nolan of St. Louis,
12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
