Joe Hackett,
68, retired contractor, drowned Tuesday morning in Open Lake. His boat was discovered in midmorning,
racing in circles and his cap floating nearby. Eleven boats directed by Sheriff Gwinn MATTHEWS,
searched for his body until late afternoon, when it was recovered from water only a few feet
deep, but with a thick layer of soft mud underneath, in which one of his feet was lodged. Services
were Thursday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial in Grace Cemetery. He leaves his son, Joe W. HACKETT,
of Ripley and his daughter, Mrs. Walter FISH, of Henning; and his brother, Will HACKETT, of
Santa Barbara, Calif.

S.S. (Vester) Halfacre arrived in Ripley Wednesday night from Vicksburg, Miss.,
where he died after a brief illness of malaria hematuria. He had been engaged in the timber
business in Alsatia, La. for several years, and was taken ill about a week ago and was carried
to a hospital in Vicksburg. He was 35 years of age and was a son of Mr. J.F. Halfacre of Stonewall.
His brother, Mr. Gus Halfacre, was called to his bedside when he became critically ill and accompanied
the remains here, which were laid to rest in Grace Cemetery Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock

and histology technician, died of complications from septicemia Saturday at a son's home in

She was a member of Rebekah of Ruth Lodge No. 1 in Memphis and a member of Central Assembly
of God Church of Ripley for more than 60 years. Mrs. Haynes, the widow of Floyd G. Koonce and
Leon Haynes, leaves three sons, Dr. Marshall Koonce and Jerry Koonce, both of Memphis, and Frederick
Koonce of Jefferson City, Mo.; a sister, Alma Gitchell Koonce, and a brother, David Gitchell,
