Dr. G. W. Lee died at his residence in the 11th District [of Haywood County] in his 80th year on November 29. He left a widow and numerous grown children. In 1861 he married Miss Julia De La Plas, daughter of the well-known Mons. De La Pas, a music teacher. Before the war he was quite well-to-do, but the war ruined him and for some years he was very poor. Of late he has been more prosperous. He was the father of Mrs. Sid Evans of Ripley. Additional information from submitter: He is buried in Concord Cemetery east of Gates; his tombstone states that he was born in Caswell Co., NC in 1821, and died in Haywood Co., TN in 1900, and bears the image of a cotton ball and bloom with the inscription "His favorite flower." - BBD |
