Charles Joseph ALLEN, 52, of 933 Jackson Ave., Memphis, brother of Grady ALLEN and Mrs. Ruby NICHOLS, both of Ripley, was dead on arrival at 8:15 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Hospital in Memphis, of an apparant heart attack. Services were Wednesday in Ripley Funeral Home. (no burial place given). Born in Lauderdale County, he moved to Memphis in 1954. He leaves his wife, Marion Elizabeth Kirby ALLEN; son, Charles Lyle ALLEN, of Memphis; daughters, Mrs. Marion Jo KIRK and Mrs. Louise NEAL, both of Lorian, Ohio; another brother, James Willie ALLEN, of Lorain, Ohio; and two other sisters, Mrs. Peggy SHOEMAKE, of Memphis and Mrs. Francis COLEMAN, of Grand Prairie, Texas.

Mrs. Henrietta Poe AMMONS, 75, of Asbury, died at noon Thursday of last week in Lauderdale County Hospital. Services were Saturday at Salem Baptist Church, of which she was a member, burial in Poplar Grove Cemetery. She was the widow of A. D. AMMONS, Asbury farmer, who died in 1961. She leaves three sons, Melvin AMMONS, J. B. AMMONS and Don AMMONS, all of Asbury and a sister, Mrs. Nora AMMONS, of Ripley.

Mrs. Mattie Webb ARMOUR, 89, wife of C. N. ARMOUR, Halls construction firm owner, 89, died at 3:45 a.m. Monday in Lauderdale County Hospital, which she entered April 29th, 1967. Services were Tuesday in Grace Baptist Church, of which she was a member, burial in Lauderdale County Memorial Gardens. Born in Decatur County, she moved to Lauderdale County early in life. She leaves her daughters, Miss Amelia CRIHFIELD, and Mrs. Gladys CARSON, of Halls and Mrs. L. M. VAUGHN, of Central; her brothers, Jeff WEBB and Will WEBB, of Central and Hobe WEBB, of Edith; and sister, Mrs. Oscar SMITH, of Jackson.

Crowell William ARMSTRONG, 87, of Halls, retired building contractor, died at 9 p.m. Thursday of last week Baptist Hospital of Memphis. Services were at Halls Funeral Home, burial in South Fork Cemetery. Born in Suwanne, GA, he lived in Ft. Worth, Texas and Jacksonville, FL., before he moved to Halls in 1948. Relatives said he had been a member of the Texas Rangers and a US Marshal. He leaves his wife, Freddie Olds ARMSTRONG; a daughter, Mrs. J. P. THOMPSON, of West Memphis, AR; his sisters, Mrs. Frank BEARD, Mrs. Virginia CARLISLE, both of Dallas, TX and Mrs. Paul HOWARD of Grand Praire, TX.

Charlie B. BAKER, 95, retired Crockett County farmer & landowner, who had also operated a general store in Halls, died about 4:15 p.m. Sunday in Parkview Hospital in Dyersburg, which he entered Tuesday of last week of uremia. Services were at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Archer's Chapel Methodist Church, of which he was a founder and leader and in which he taught Sunday School for half a century. Burial was in the church cemetery. He was born in Bakersville, where his forefathers had been prominent. His father was a Civil War hero at Shiloh. His family moved to West Tennessee in 1885 by covered wagon. His wife, Mrs. Annie Norman BAKER, died in 1935. He leaves three sons, Shellie BAKER, of near Halls, Cecil BAKER, Mayor of Gates, and Melvin BAKER, of near Gates; and a daughter, Mrs. Cora GILLILAND, of Halls.

William Harvey BANKS, 82, of 331 Stonewall, Memphis, father of Mrs. Joe A. JOHNSTON, of Ripley, died Wednesday of last week in the Medicenter in Memphis. Services were Thursday of last week in Memphis, with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery. Born in Hernando, Miss., he owned land in Miss., & Ark., and was a director of a Hernando Bank. He leaves his wife (unnamed); his sons, Wm. H. BANKS, Jr., of Memphis and Bowdre BANKS, of Caruthersville, Mo.; his daughters, Mrs. J. Stansill COVINGTON, of Memphis and Mrs. Leonard D. WRIGHT, of Byhalia, Miss.

LONG POSTMASTER OF HENNING--George F. BARFIELD, Henning postmaster 31 years, died at 9 p.m. Thursday in Lauderdale County Hospital. Services were Sunday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial in Poplar Grove Cemetery. A lifelong resident of Lauderdale County, he was a veteran of WWI. He was a Methodist. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. J. B. BLACK, of Jefferson City, Mo., and Mrs. W. H. McCLURE, of Vero Beach, Fla.; a brother, Robert L. BARFIELD, of Van Nuys, Calif.

Mrs. Hattie Mae Nelson BARNES, 86, widow of Robert E. BARNES, Lightfoot farmer, died about 9:30 a.m. in Lauderdale County Hospital, which she had entered three weeks earlier. Services were Tuesday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial in Lightfoot Cemetery. Born at Campground, she was a lifelong residence of Lauderdale County and a member of Lightfoot Methodist Church. She leaves three sons; Thomas E. BARNES and Reid BARNES of Ripley and william K. BARNES, of San Bernardino, Calif., a brother, T. L. NELSON and a sister, Mrs. Laura OSTEEN, both of Ripley.

James A. BLAKLEY, one of 22 men fatally injured June 26th when he stepped on a land mine near Thua Thien in Viet Nam, earned the Purple Heart, National Defense, and Viet Nam service medals, which were presented to his parents, Mr. & Mrs. James BLAKLEY, of 209 Front St., Halls.

Clarence L. BRADFORD, 70, of Dyersburg, a retired carpenter, who was a brother of Horace BRADFORD, of Henning, died Wednesday of last week in John Gaston Hospital in Memphis. Services were last week in Curry Funeral Home in Dyersburg, burial in Mount Vernon Cemetery in Unionville. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Annie Mae BRADFORD; daughters, Mrs. Emily LEDFORD, of Memphis, Mrs. Mary Lou COOPER, of Rutherford, Mrs. Barbara MOHR, of Forest Park, Ill., and Mrs. Sue WORLEY, of Torrence, Calif.; his sons, Leon BRADFORD, of Trenton, W. VIET CONG MORTAR WOUNDS--PFC Harmon Wayne (Buzzy) BURKS, 22, son of Mr. & Mrs. Harmon G. BURKS, of Henning, was fatally wounded January 30th in Viet Nam. He received fragmentation wounds to the head and body from hostile mortar fire while in a defensive position near Quang Nam. A 1964 graduate of Ripley High School, and of William R. Moore School of Technology in Memphis, he entered the service November 2, 1966, and had been in Viet Nam since September 1967. He also leaves his sister, Miss Rosalee BURKS, of Booneville, Miss., and his grandmothers, Mrs. J. A. FIELDS and Mrs. Lee H. BURKS, both of Henning.

Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Smith BUTNER, 81, of Woodville, died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday in Layderdale County Hospital, which she had entered Sunday, after long illness. Services were Thursday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial in Woodville Cemetery. Born in Bee Branch, Ark., she moved to Lauderdale County in 1925. A member of Woodville Baptist Church, she was the widow of Lee Ernest BUTNER, who died in 1955. She leaves a son, Robert E. BUTNER, of Ripley.

Mrs. Violet CAGLE, 63, of 116 Northcrest Drive, Ripley, died at 5 p.m. Thursday of last week in Lauderdale County Hospital, which she entered Sunday. Services were Saturday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial was in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Memphis. Born in Haywood County, she moved to Lauderdale County from Memphis last August. She was the widow of Ernest CAGLE and leaves sisters: Mrs. Susie KING, of Dyersburg and Mrs. Irene BAGGETT, of Humboldt.

Samuel Vincent CARMACK, 85, retired landowner, farmer and rural mail carrier of Curve, died about 3:15 p.m. Monday in Lauderdale County Hospital. Services were Wednesday in Curve Church of Christ, burial in Prospect Cemetery. He leaves his sons, Edwin CARMACK, of Halls, Sidney CARMACK, of Ripley, Winston CARMACK, of Gates, and Avery CARMACK, of Evansville, Ind.; his daughters, Mrs. Jewell SUTTON and Mrs. Fay WILLIAMS, both of Ripley, Mrs. Demetra WILLIAMS, of Gates, Mrs. Lyndell MITCHELL, of Memphis, Mrs. Bernice FORESTER, of Oxford, Ala., and Mrs. Vivian WALKER, of Huntsville, Ala.; and his brother, Arthur CARMACK, of Memphis.

Miss Narcissa CHAPMAN, 90, of 1328 Carr, Memphis, former Riplian and sister-in-law of Mrs. Nora CHAPMAN, of Ripley, died at 6:35 a.m. Wednesday in Baptist Hospital in Memphis. Services were Thursday in Memphis Funeral Home, with burial in the Lake Drive Cemetery in Ripley. She leaves two neices; Mrs. M. M. REEVES, of Eufala, Ala., and Mrs. R. B. EMMERSON, of Anniston, Ala., and one nephew, Scott CHAPMAN, of Atlanta, GA.

Robert Roland CHIPMAN, 87, of Halls, a retired farmer, died at 4 p.m. last Friday in Western State Hospital, which he entered a month earlier. Services were Saturday in Halls Funeral Home, burial in Lauderdale County Memorial Gardens. His wife, Mrs. Mamie Summar CHIPMAN died in 1964. He leaves his son, Raymond CHIPMAN, of Halls.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lera CLEMENT and his sons, James H. CLEMENT and Ernest CLEMENT, both of Alamo.

Dr. Eldon D. CONNELL, 71, brother of J. T. CONNELL, of Halls, died at 11 p.m. Tuesday at his home in Memphis. Services were Thursday in First Congregational Church, of which he was a member. A native of Crockett County, Dr. CONNELL practised as a physician in Memphis for 38 years, before he retired three years ago because of ill health. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Ruth L. CONNELL; and his brother Frank CONNELL, of Alamo.

Joseph Littleton COOK, 83, retired farmer of Central, died at 8:30 a.m. Monday in Lauderdale County Nursing Home, where he had been a patient since last October. Services were Wednesday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial was in Enon Baptist Church Cemetery. Born in Hardeman County, he moved to Lauderdale County 70 years ago. He leaves his wife, Annie Jane Heathcock COOK; six sons, Enos COOK and John T. COOK, both of Memphis, Joseph L. COOK, Jr., and Eugene COOK, both of Chicago. Born in Henning, he moved to Tipton County in 1900. He spent most of his 60 years in business as a salesman for Walker Hardware Co., in Covington and claimed a record for length of employment at the same place in that city. He leaves his wife, Harriet Louise Jenkins CURRIE; two sons, Jack D. CURRIE, of McMinnville and Ivan R. CURRIE, of Olive Branch, Miss.; and a daughter, Mrs. Hamilton A. FIFFE, of South Pasadena, Calif.

CURSEY, Jr., of Madrid, Spain; his brothers, Lowell CURSEY, of Ripley, and B. N. CURSEY, of Dyersburg; and his sister, Mrs. Ed ROBERSON, of Ripley.

Mrs. Lee CURSEY, 91, died at 2 a.m. last Friday in her home at 142 Highland in Ripley, after a long illness. Services were Saturday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial in Maplewood Cemetery. She had lived in Lauderdale County 56 years. She was the widow of Osceola CURSEY, Ripley produce merhant who died in 1943. She leaves sons, Howard CURSEY and Lowell CURSEY, both of Ripley, and Bennie CURSEY, of Dyersburg; daughter, Mrs. Bernice ROBERSON, of Ripley and a brother, Walter PINCHLEY, of Dyersburg.

Earl DENNISON, 78, father of Mrs. Woodrow GODWIN, of Halls, died last Friday in his home in Newbern. Services were Sunday in Newbern's First Baptist Church, burial in Fairview Cemetery. At the age of 25, he invented a duck call which he patented and which became widely known. He had been featured in Field and Stream & Outdoor Sports Magazine. He leaves his wife, Lola Ann Jackson DENNISON; his daughters, Mrs. Farris GARNER, Mrs. Noel CARMEN, and Mrs. Cecil ROSS, all of Newbern, Mrs. Glenn SWIMS, of Memphis, Mrs. Charles McCLURE and Mrs. Bobby BELL, both of Paducah, Ky.; his sons, Harold DENNISON and Tom DENNISON, both of Newbern and K. E. L. EDENS, 88, Halls farmer, died at 3 a.m. Saturday in a Lockwood, Mo hospital, which he had entered seven weeks earlier. Services were Monday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial in Halls Cemetery. He spent most of his life in Halls before he moved to Missouri two years ago. He leaves three sons, Kenneth EDENS, of Ash Grove, Mo., Lloyd EDENS, of Rockford, Ill., and Glenn EDENS, of Walton, Ky.; a daughter, Mrs. Grace SUMMERLIN, of Memphis; and a brother, Dennis EDENS, of Ann Arbor, Mich.

Services were Tuesday in Halls Funeral Home, burial in Bethlehem Cemetery in Henning. Born at Hurricane Hill, he was a lifelong resident of Lauderdale County. He leaves a son, Richard EDWARDS, Jr., of Chicago, Illinois; daughters, Mrs. Frances Louise HILL, of Halls, and Mrs. Virginia Ann HALL, of Memphis; a sister, Mrs. Annie BLANKENSHIP, of Arp.

He leaves his wife, Maggie Langley FULLEN; his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Talmadge FULLEN; his sons, Tommy Lynn and Timothy FULLEN; his daughter, Janet Claire FULLEN; his brothers, Donald FULLEN of Fort Bragg, NC and Billy FULLEN of Buena Park, CA; and a sister, Mrs. Ona Fay HUNTER of Millington.

She leaves four grandchildren; Maurice GAINES, of Henning, Miss Ella Jo GAINES, of Memphis, Charles Roy GAINES, of Dallas, Texas, and William Monroe GAINES, of St. Peters, MO.

Services were at 2 p.m. Thursday in Halls Funeral Home, Rev. Enos THURMOND officiated. Burial in Halls Cemetery. Born in Gibson County, she moved to Lauderdale County in 1911. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Halls. Her husband died in 1920.

He leaves his wife, Vallie Layne GARRETT; a son, Finis GARRETT; two daughters, Mrs. Beatrice WOOD and Mrs. Audret MITCHELL; and a brother, Presley GARRETT, all of Halls.

A lifelong resident of Crockett County, he leaves his wife, Irene Garrett GILLILAND; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth ELMORE , of Halls; a brother, Eldon GILLILAND, of Chicago, Ill.; and a sister, Mrs. Jettie VAUGHN, of Halls.

Arch GOOCH, 74, retired farmer of Double Bridges, died at 4 p.m. Monday in Lauderdale County Hospital, after a long illness. Services were Tuesday in Halls Funeral Home, Rev. Nolan CRINER officiated. CRASH FATAL FOR NUTBUSH MINISTER--Rev. Wm. Fred GRAY, 43, evangelist and pastor of the Full Gospel Revival Center at Nutbush, was killed Monday morning after his car left Highway 19, a half mile west of Brownsville and struck a tree. State Trooper Bob YOCHUM said thw accident occurred at 6:45 a.m. and that Rev. Mr. GRAY died in Haywood County Memorial Hospital in brownsville four hours later, without having regained consciousness. The trooper said GRAY was alone in the car. He said tire tracks showed the car had left the road for times over a distance of about 600 feet. The officer said Gray, a diabetic, was in insulin shock when he reached the hospital. Gray formerly lived in Memphis, he moved to Brownsville about a year ago. A Navy veteran of WWII, he was a member of the American Legion. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary Carolyn GRAY; his son, W. Services for Glen HAZELRIG, 9-year-old grandson of Mr. & Mrs. George CREWS, of Edith, who was accidently shot to death Saturday were at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Wells Station Baptist Church in Memphis, with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery at Edith Methodist Church. The boy's uncle, Aubrey CREWS, of 1369 Oak Ridge, Memphis, had loaned a 20-gauge shotgun to Glen's brother, Danny, 15, for hunting during the holidays. Police said Danny had varnished the stock and was putting the gun into a living room closet in his home at 1538 Wells Station Road, when it fired. The blast struck Glen in the chest as he sat in a chair. He was taken to St. Joseph Hospital and was pronounced dead at 3 p.m. He leaves his mother, Peggy Hazelrig KIRK; his father, William Wade HAZELRIG; his stepfather, Leonard KIRK; and a sister Rachael, 12 years old.

FURNACE GAS KILLS PARENTS OF RIPLIAN IN BELLS RESIDENCE---Mr. & Mrs. Frank HERRON, parents of Mrs. Jack DAILEY, of Ripley, were found dead at their home in Bells about 9 a.m. Monday, when a negro woman received no answer to her knocking. Crockett County authorities said they were overcome by a gas floor furnace that was not working properly. Services were in First Methodist Church in Bells, with burial in Bellview Cemetery. Mr. HERRON, 76, was a retired produce farmer. Mrs. HERRON, a native of Roxton, Texas was 73. They leave another daughter, Mrs. James HIGGS of Pittsburg, PA. He leaves two brothers, John HERRON, of Trezevant and Horace HERRON of Huntington. She leaves 4 sisters, Mrs. Julia STEVENS & Mrs. Wallace HICKMAN, both of Okla. SANFORD, 19, of Brownsville, was killed Sunday when a pickup truck he was driving skidded on icy Highway 19 near the Haywood-Lauderdale County Line and struck a tree. Services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Brownsville Home with burial in Trinity Cemetery. A graduate of Haywood County High, he was a freshman in the University of Tennessee at Martin. He had been attending First Methodist Church in Ripley. His parents, Mr. & Mrs. Jim SANFORD and three brothers, Thomas, Ben and Jack SANFORD survive him.

Services were Saturday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial in Lauderdale County Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Virgie Lucas SUMROW, 75, of Halls, died at 6 p.m. last Friday in Dyersburg Manor Convalescent Home, which she entered January 16th. Services were Sunday in Halls First Christian Church, burial in Halls Cemetery. Born in Dixon County, she moved to Lauderdale County in 1919. She leaves her husband, Joe SUMROW, landowner and ginner; her brothers, Clyde T. LUCAS, of McEWEN and F. M. LUCAS, of Nashville; her sisters, Mrs. John McELHINEY, of Nashville and Mrs. Herbert JONES, of Dunlap.

Banks TAYLOR, 70, of Edith, retired farmer and former Fort Pillow State Prison Farm employee, died at 11 p.m. Thursday of last week in Kennedy Hospital in Memphis, where he had entered December 28th. Services at Edith Methodist Church, Burial in Lauderdale County Memorial Gardens. He was a Navy Veteran of WWI. He leaves his wife, Nellie Crihfiels TAYLOR; a son, Jim TAYLOR of Mt. Vernon, IL and a son, Bobby Joe TAYLOR of West Covina, CA; two brothers, Pike TAYLOR of Halls and Eutram TAYLOR of Pinole, CA; and two sisters, Mrs. John CHISM of Ripley and Mrs. Kate TALLEY, of Cartage, MO.

Albert Young THOMPSON, 74, of 1577 Sterling Road, Memphis; brother of Paul THOMPSON & Neal THOMPSON and Mrs. Laura REECE, all of Ripley, died at 10:05 p.m. Sunday in Methodist Hospital in Memphis. Services were in Memphis Funeral, burial in Asbury Cemetery here. He also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Rose Mary Thompson ROGERS, of Memphis; and another brother, Hugh THOMPSON, of Arlington.

Mrs. Wilma Chism THOMPSON, 62, of 127 Crescent Drive, Ripley, died at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday in Lauderdale County Hospital, which she entered Tuesday. Services were Thursday in edith Methodist Church, burial in Edith Cemetery. Born in Lauderdale County, she moved to Tipton County in 1941 and back to Ripley four months ago. She was a member of Ripley Church of Christ. She leaves her husband, John THOMPSON; two ste-sons, Kenneth THOMPSON, of Humboldt and -----THOMPSON, of Harrison, Ark.; A step-daughter, Mrs. Oma WILLIAMS, of Bellville, Mich.; a brother, John CHISM, of Ripley; three sisters, Mrs. Neelie CRIHFIELD, of Ripley, Mrs. Odell ELLIS, of Edith and Mrs. Jennie MANERS, of Arp.

Mrs. Woneda THOMPSON, 49, of 938 Maple Drive, Memphis, sister-in-law of Mrs. Lena Dyer, of Ripley, Mrs. Allie HARRISON, of Arp, Mrs. George BRADEN, of Lightfoot and Mrs. Edith HAYNES, of Central, died Tuesday of last week in Baptist Hospital in Memphis, after a stroke. She leaves her husband, David THOMPSON; her sons, Robert D. THOMPSON and David Allen THOMPSON, both of Memphis, and her daughter, Mrs. R. A. KOGLER, of Virginia Beach, VA.

Sanford Miller TURNER, 71, retired farmer, died Monday of last week in his home in Henning. Services were Tuesday of last week in Maley Funeral Home with burial in Munford Cemetery. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Pattie Sue Mason TURNER; his sons, John L. TURNER, of Ripley and Eugene TURNER, of Huron; his daughters, Mrs. Lawrence HAMIL and Mrs. J. C. ERVIN, both of Henning.

Mrs. Augusta VADEN, 82, widow of John M. VADEN, Halls merchant, died at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday in Parkview Hospital, Dyersburg, which she entered two hours earlier with heart failure. Services were at 10 a.m. Thursday at Halls Funeral Home, burial in Concord Cemetery. Born in Haywood County, she moved to Lauderdale County in 1907. She was a member of Curve Church of God. Her husband died in 1962. She leaves 6 sons; Paul, Lynn, Judson, & Wayne VADEN, all of Halls , John M. VADEN, Jr., of Memphis and Andrew VADEN, of Marion, Ark.; two daughters, Mrs. Gilbreath DYER, of Halls and Mrs. W. C. BATTS, of Fulton, Ky.; a sister, Mrs. Robert P. CLARK, of Forked Deer.

Mrs. Maggie Griggs WAKEFIELD, 82, of Luckett, died at 4:35 p.m. Thursday of last week in Lauderdale County Hospital, which she entered Jan. 13th. Services were Saturday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial in Lightfoot Cemetery. A lifelong resident of Lauderdale County, she was a member of Luckett Methodist Church, the widow of Albert Wilbur WAKEFIELD, Luckett farmer, who died in 1928. She leaves her son, Rudell WAKEFIELD, of Ripley; her daughters, Mrs. Pearl OSTEEN and Mrs. Elmer CONRAD, both of Ripley; her brother, Wiley GRIGGS and her sister, Mrs. J. C. WAKEFIELD Sr., both of Ripley.

Oscar WAKEFIELD, 80, of 3659 Kimball, Memphis, brother of Jack WAKEFIELD and Mrs. Oma CROOK, both of Ripley, died at 9:45 p.m. Sunday in Memphis MediCenter after a long illness. Burial was in Memphis Memorial Park. Born in Lauderdale County, he moved to Texas about 1908 and returned to Memphis in 1926. He had retired after 30 years with the U. S. Corps of Engineers in Memphis. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. D. E. WAKEFIELD of Memphis and a sister, Tense McGARRITY of Memphis.

He leaves his sons, Wilburn WEST, of Brownsville, Odell WEST, of Providence and Olden WEST, of Memphis; daughters, Mrs. John BRUCE and Mrs. Beatrice UTLEY, both of Brownsville, Mrs. Frances PUCKETT, of Jackson, Mrs. Paul JONES, of Ala., and Mrs. Virginia DEDMON, of Calif.; a brother, Lee WEST, of Brownsville; and another sister, Mrs. Arthur HARRELL, of Ala.

A., Calif.; her brother, Byron LUCAS, of Dyersburg; her sister, Mrs. Irma PARRISH, of St. Louis, Mo.; and her grandchildren, James Cary ALSOBROOKS & Mrs. Jim HORNER, both of Memphis and Mrs. Harvey COULTER, of Apopka, Fla.
