The Rev. Julian Thomas Hendren, 91, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died Thursday, May 25, 2006, at the home of his daughter.

A memorial service is set for 5 p.m. Sunday, June 4, at First Presbyterian Church in Marfa. Burial of his ashes, along with the ashes of his wife are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 10, in Cross Roads Cemetery in Curve, Tenn.

He was born May 17, 1915, in Ripley, Lauderdale County, Tenn. He was the son of Bessie Christine Underwood Hendren and Otis Douglas Hendren. After graduating from Ripley High School, he attended Bethel College in McKenzie, Tenn. Vanderbilt University (George Peabody College) in Nashville, Tenn.; Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin. He had a bachelors degree in arts, a bachelors degree in science, a masters degree in arts and a bachelors degree in divinity. He was a Mason and his fraternal organizations were Phi Delta Sigma, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Chi Delta Eta. He was a member of Grace Presbytery, Synod of the Sun, Dallas.

He preached in Cumberland Presbyterian churches throughout Tennessee and Kentucky and was a prominent musician in this area prior to World War II when he enlisted in the Chaplain Branch of the U.S. Army on Dec. 30, 1942. He served in France, England, and Italy during World War II and left active duty in July of 1947. He was in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1947 to 1967 and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

He became a full time minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) upon graduation from seminary in 1955 and served Texas Presbyterian churches in Fort Davis, Snyder, Sherman and Paris. After he retired in Paris, he served as a stated supply in Cumby, for many years; he and his wife then moved back to Paris for true retirement. They moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 1994 and resided at 2200 N.E. 61st Court until they moved back to Texas in 2003; their last residence was 601 W. Columbia St. in Marfa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Ramsey Hendren on Sept. 4, 2005; a sister, Annie Kate Shultz of Hodgenville, Ken. and a brother, Marvin Emmett 'Hink' Hendren of Ripley, Tenn.

Survivors include two daughters, the Rev. Gladys Hendren Dennis of Marfa and Julianne Hendren Deitemeyer of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Marfa; son-in-law, Thomas Edward Deitemeyer, also of Fort Lauderdale and Marfa; grandson, Douglas McKendree Dennis of Riggins, Idaho, and Marfa; sisters, Frances Hendren Coffman of Memphis, Tenn. and Elizabeth Hendren Cochran, of Bogue Chitto, Miss.; brother, William Lasley Hendren of Ocean Springs, Miss.; sister-in-law, Marguerite Ramsey of Marfa; nephews and nieces across the country, all cherished and loved.
