Rodgers  2

I am presenting the following facts to prove that William Rogers and Chassey/Chacy/Chassie Jones were the parents of Pleasant Rogers who married Phoebe Hickman in Obion County Tennessee on February 16,1831. She is the same Phoebe Hickman who was living in Vinta Oklahoma and swore she was a Cherokee to the Indian Commission.

I submit this information for two reasons: 1) to allow those who believe Charles was Pleasant’s father to see the correct lineage and hopefully join together and find the parents of William Rogers and Chacey Jones. I hope that we can combine our knowledge, share our family histories, and track this family correctly to North Carolina and 2) to show that genealogical research is based on facts, documentation, and truth. I want to make sure that OUR family history is correct to the best of our abilities based on correct records, facts and documents. I want this history to stand the test of time and be corrected when facts prove the need to change any material.

Fact 1 William Rogers was granted land on Tumbling Creek on February 6, 1810. This creek was located in the Northwest corner of Hickman County, however, in the 1830’s it was transferred to Humphreys County which is now located in the Southeast corner of that county.

Fact 2 The 1820 census lists William Rogers in Hickman County. No Charles Rogers is listed in Hickman County in 1820!

Fact 3 The 1830 census lists Chacey Rogers who is the widow of William Rogers and five houses away is Pleasant Rogers. No Charles Rogers is listed in Hickman County in 1830!

Fact 4 Land grant No. 12348 dated March 20, 1836 for 70 acres was issued to Pleasant Rogers. This was located on Tumbling Creek in Humphreys County.

Fact 5 On December 7, 1847 William Rogers Jr. was the administrator to Pleasant Rogers’s estate. Four notes to Chasey Rogers, widow to William Rogers Sr., in the amount of

$41.20 was listed in the settlement.

Fact 6 On February 8, 1859, Pherrell Vincent Rogers was in court to reach a settlement for being the guardian to C.J Peck formally Rogers, and G. W. Rogers who were minor heirs to Chasey Rogers. C.J. Peck has attained the age of twenty-one years and the guardian produced a receipt from her and her husband W. Peck for one half of $103.82.

Fact 7 On February 8, 1861 a settlement was made to Pherrell Vincent Rogers who was the guardian of G.W. Rogers’s heir of Chacey Rogers deceased.

Fact 8 Pherrell Vincent Rogers is my great, grandfather and he was the son of Pleasant Rogers. My grandmother was named Lucille Vincent Rogers and my father was named Pherrell Rogers Thomas.

Fact 9 The Woodrow Peck Bible states that Pleasant Rogers was born the 29 Th of November 1801. The same date listed in several other documents. Sarah Spicer his first wife was born the 29 Th of December 1806. Pherrell Vincent Rogers was born the 12 Th day of April 182 (?). William Jasper Rogers as born the 15 Th day of December 1825, Matilda Rogers was born the 29 Th day of July 1828. (one family) Pleasant Rogers was married the 16 Th of February 1831 to PHOEBE HICKMAN. She was born the 25 day of January 1812. Edie Caroline Rogers was born the 13 Th day of Nov. 183(?), Berry Rogers was born the 12 Th of January 183 (?), Lewis Rogers was born ( cannot read date), Chasey Jane Rogers was born the 7 Th day of Nov. 1837, Martha Rogers was born the 18 Th of June 1841, George W. Rogers was born the 6 Th day of Dec. 1842, William A. Peck married Chasey Jane Rogers on the 8 Th day of April 1858. (Refer to facts 6 and 7).

Fact 10 Robert A. Prather married Edie Caroline Rogers on May 5, 1847 in Obion County where Pheobe Hickman Rogers’s family lived and the marriage was in the house of John Hickman.

Fact 11 Howard L. Prather swore to the Indian Commission on September 10, 1908 the following: 1) I claim my Cherokee blood through my mother whose name was Caroline Rogers. 2) My grandfather whose name was Pleasant Rogers. 3) My mother had one brother, George Rogers (refer to facts 6 ,7 and 9). 4) My mother was third cousin to William Boudinot’s wife. 5) My mother had one sister, she was younger than my mother was and her name was JANE PECK (refer to fact 6). 6) My mother had a half brother by the name of William Rogers.

Fact 12 Margaret J. Parks swore to the Indian Commission the following: 1) My mother was born about the year 1830 to 1835. 2) I have often heard her talk about Obion County Tennessee (Refer to the 1850 Obion County Census which indicates Phoebe Hickman Rogers was living near her family in Obion County. Jasper, Jane and George are in the household but Robert Prather and Caroline are listed at 557-713 in the census and Pheobe is 556-713.) 3) Her parents were Pleasant Rogers and Phoebe Rogers. 4) Pleasant Rogers came to the West. Pleasant had land in Obion County Tennessee, Arkansas and maybe near the Oklahoma border (but this is not proven). He died in Humphreys County Tennessee and maybe buried on the homestead. 5)The brothers and sisters of my mother were George Rogers, Jane Rogers Peck, Jasper Rogers. (Refer to the 1850 Tennessee census for Obion County and these children are listed.) They were the full brothers and sisters of my mother. My grandfather Pleasant Rogers married twice. The above named children were the children by the second wife. My grandmother Phoebe Hickman Rogers died in Mo. The half brothers of my mother were William, Ferrill ( my great grandfather) and Fred or Fed. The half sister was Matilda.

Fact 13 I have a letter in my possession dated January 5, 1889 from Vinta Cherokee Nation from Caroline Prather to my great grandfather Pherrell Vincent Rogers. She writes: “ Dear BROTHER Your letter was very gladly read. Glad to hear from you all. This leaves all well hope it will find you one and all in the best of health. BROTHER I can assure you that I would like very much to see you…. Will come at any time. Dear Brother you must…. I can assure you that I don’t want a lawsuit with my BROTHER. Your loving SISTER CAROLINE PRATHER.

Fact 14 Mrs. Nedra Freeman Harris of Route 1 Big Cabin, Oklahoma 74332 states; “Robert Prather would have been my great, great grandfather. An article written about Baxter her great grandfather states that Robert and Caroline Prather came from Texas to Oklahoma in August of 1882. You may have this information that Nancy (or Nannie) Downing married Charles Rogers and they had two children: PLEASANT and Eliza. Eliza married John Seabolt and then Thomas Fields.” This is not the Pleasant Rogers from Humphreys County. I repeat this is not the same Pleasant Rogers who married Phoebe Hickman.

Fact 15 Pheobe Rogers who was blind, could not read or write and signed her name with a X. She swore for the Indian Commission in Stoddard County Missouri on September 22, 1874 the following: She claims to be 73 years old in 1874. Her birth date in the Bible is

January 25, 1812 which would make her 62 (10 years difference). Pleasant Rogers was the son of Charles Rogers true a Pleasant Rogers was born to Charles Rogers but not her father. Pleasant Rogers died in or about 1830 or 1832. This is not true most court documents for his estate are around 1848. Pleasant and Pheobe had a child Caroline E. Rogers which is true but this proves the line from William to Pleasant to Caroline based on the evidence above. (I see NO CHARLES in this line.) Robert E. Prather married Caroline E. Rogers about 30 years ago, which is true 1847 to 1874, is 27 years. Pleasant Rogers was an acknowledged Cherokee by blood, which is a lie. If he were a full-bloodied Native American he would not have been listed in the 1830 and 1830 census records which only counted free white males. I can find no evidence in any document that he was ever involved in any Native American history. He may have had some connection to a tribe via William in North Carolina but this is not proven yet. He was the son of Charles Rogers and nephew of John Rogers, which is a lie. He may be a cousin to John and Charles but NOT a direct bloodline. She lived in the old Cherokee nation in Tennessee about 25 or 30 miles from Gunter’s Landing on the Tennessee River. I have my doubts since I can find no evidence of any Native American nations in Hickman or Humphreys County. She lived on Tumbling Creek, which was inhabited by all white settlers. I am also not sure of the location of this landing and I need to do more research in the area. She swears her maiden name was Phoebe Hickman and this alone proves the line from William to Pleasant to her. (Refer to fact 9.) I also have the children of Pleasant and Sarah Spicer from which my line comes.

I now present these facts if anyone can disprove them, change them or show them wrong then provide clear documented official records to show me wrong. I challenge anyone who has Charles Rogers as the father of this Pleasant Rogers to PROVE me wrong. I do not look for negativity, histrionics, or rude comments only the truth. I have shown beyond any reasonable doubt that the line is correct as posted on this web site.

I challenge those who believe that Charles Rogers was Pleasant Rogers’s father to join us and share your records and family histories. We can together contribute to the correct Rogers family history and hopefully find the location in North Carolina where William Rogers and Phoebe Jones lived. I want to find the connection with John, Charles, William and Pleasant. If we can find this connection we can have a family history to be proud of and will stand for generations to come. I am only concerned with correct, accurate and verifiable documentation. If you cannot accept the accuracy of this information then I feel for you. You are wandering in the dark with incorrect data, which will sooner or later be proven wrong. I wish you all the luck in the world but I will continue to look for the correct information and correct my material if proven wrong. I am willing to admit when I am incorrect and change any material that I have. I look forward to hearing from anyone who can shed light on this material. John Thomas
