R. Horner, Waverly&#8217;s Oldest Citizen, Dies<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Waverly, Tenn., April 24&#8211;(Special)&#8211;Funeral services were scheduled this afternoon for\u00a0<strong>Dr. William Russell Horner<\/strong>, 96, Humphrey County&#8217;s oldest citizen, at Bascom Church, with\u00a0<strong>Elder Russell Scott<\/strong>\u00a0of Murray, KY., officiating, assisted by\u00a0<strong>Elder Cecil Davis<\/strong>. Burial was in Trinity Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Horner died Saturday night at his home here following a long illness. A native of Perry County, he was the son of the late\u00a0<strong>John<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Patterson Horner.<\/strong>\u00a0He moved to Humphreys County in 1878.<\/p>\n<p>When a young man he taught in Perry County schools, later enrolling as a medical student at the University of Nashville. He began practicing medicine in 1878, serving as a general practitioner until 1936, when he retired from active duty. He was believed to be the oldest doctor in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Horner had been a member of Primitive Baptist Church since boyhood. His wife, the former\u00a0<strong>Miss Amanda Frances Pace,<\/strong>\u00a0whom he married in 1869, died several years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Surviving are three daughters,\u00a0<strong>Mrs. Lauretta Morgan<\/strong>, Waverly,\u00a0<strong>Mrs. Leila Warren<\/strong>, Nashville, and\u00a0<strong>Mrs. Wiley McKeel,<\/strong>\u00a0Barberton, Ohio; three sons,\u00a0<strong>Charlie<\/strong>, McEwen,\u00a0<strong>Willliam I<\/strong>, Washington D.C., And\u00a0<strong>J. F. Horner<\/strong>, Waverly; 18 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; one brother,\u00a0<strong>J. F. Horner<\/strong>, Centerville, and two sisters,\u00a0<strong>Mrs. Betty Nix<\/strong>, Linden, and\u00a0<strong>Mrs. Viola Pope<\/strong>, Luray.<\/p>\n<p>Submitted by Alisa McKeel Ottaviano<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. W.
