M. C. <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">GALLOWAY<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">, editor of the <em>Memphis Avalanche<\/em>, was at the office of Monsarrat, Lanier &amp; Co., Assessor M. H. <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">WOOD<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">, who had taken offence at publications made in the <em>Avalanche<\/em>, took the occasion to call Col. <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">GALLOWAY<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\"> to account for the same; a difficult ensued, during the course of which <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">WOOD<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\"> thrust a walking cane at his intended victim &#8211; the cane was an\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.09375px;\">ingeniously<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0constructed weapon, combining the qualities of a rifle and common walking stick &#8211; knowing that it would be\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.09375px;\">seized<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">, and when Col. <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">GALLOWAY<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\"> has grasped it, <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">WOOD<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\"> pulled the trigger of the well masked\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.09375px;\">weapon<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0and discharged its contents into the Colonel&#8217;s hand. Had it not been for the prompt action of a by-stander who thrust the cane aside, a more serious result of this attempted assassination, in all probability, would have to be recorded. <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">WOOD<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\"> was taken in charge and handed over to the proper officers, who placed him in lock-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn85033306\/1866-09-01\/ed-1\/seq-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Bolivar bulletin.
