M. DRAKE<\/strong> of Hamilton Nominated on Third Ballot. The Republican\u00a0Congressional Convention of the third district assemble \/sic\/ in this city on Tuesday last at 1 o\u2019clock p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The Convention was called to order by <strong>Hon. W. S. MARSHAL<\/strong> Secretary of the congressional\u00a0executive committee. <strong>Mr. MARSHAL<\/strong> in a few brief remarks stated the object of the convention.\u00a0<strong>Hon W. N. HOG<\/strong>E of McMinn was elected permanent chairman, and <strong>W. S. TIPTON<\/strong> permanent\u00a0Secretary of the convention.<\/p>\n<p>A Committee on credentials was appointed consisting of <strong>J. P. WILKINSON<\/strong>, <strong>Joel I. PYOTT<\/strong> and <strong>R. B.\u00a0McGAUGHEY.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Committee on resolutions consisting of <strong>H. M. WILTSE<\/strong>, <strong>C. E. STANLEY<\/strong>, <strong>A. MCNABB<\/strong>, <strong>T. L. CATE<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Smith RIGGS<\/strong> was appointed.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee on credantials \/sic\/ reported the following vote, viz: McMinn 9, Hamilton 12,\u00a0Bradley 5, James 2, Rhea 2, Warren 2, Polk 2, total \u2013 34 necessary to a choice 18.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee on resolutions then reported the following platform.<\/p>\n<p>Resolved That we heartily endorse the platform of the national Republican party as enunciated\u00a0at the late Cincinnati Convention, and we will give our unqualified and hearty support to its nominees.<\/p>\n<p>Resolved that having full faith in the nominees and principles of our party, we the Republicans of the\u00a0third congressional district of Tennessee will fight it out on that line if it takes all winter.\u00a0The reports of both committees were adopted.<\/p>\n<p>The names of <strong>Hons. J. W. JAMES, W. L. SHARP, J. T. WILDER, Geo. M. DRAKE<\/strong> and. <strong>E. M. WIGHT<\/strong>\u00a0were put in nomination.<\/p>\n<p>First ballot \u2013 <strong>JAMES<\/strong> 1, <strong>SHARP<\/strong> 8, <strong>WIGHT<\/strong> 7, <strong>WILDER<\/strong> 2, <strong>DRAKE<\/strong> 16.<\/p>\n<p>Second ballot \u2013 <strong>SHARP<\/strong> and <strong>JAMES<\/strong> were withdrawn. Result <strong>WILDER<\/strong> 3, <strong>WIGHT<\/strong> 14, <strong>DRAKE<\/strong> 17.<\/p>\n<p>On the fourth ballot <strong>WILDER<\/strong> was withdrawn and the vote stood \u2013 <strong>DRAKE<\/strong> 21, <strong>WIGHT<\/strong> 13.<\/p>\n<p>On motion the nomination of <strong>George M. DRAKE<\/strong> was made unanimous. <strong>Mr. DRAKE<\/strong> then came\u00a0forward and in a few pointed remarks accepted the nomination amid great applause.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Col. John W. RAMSEY<\/strong> was then nominated for elector by acclamation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hon. A. G. SHARP<\/strong> was elected chairman of the congressional committee. The chairman of the\u00a0convention was authorized to appoint the executive committee. On motion the Convention then\u00a0adjourned sine die.<\/p>\n<p>Knights of Honor. This Lodge had a public demonstration at the Masonic Institute on Thursday night last.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The LODGE<\/strong> first formed in procession at their room on North street and headed by the silver cornet\u00a0band marched to the Institute and were addressed by <strong>Hon. Arthur TRAYNOR<\/strong> and <strong>Rev. J. S. PORTER<\/strong>; they\u00a0both made able speeches \u2013 setting forth the objects of the Order and its workings. After the speaking\u00a0the Lodge and invited guests repaired to the school room where was found an abundance of chicken,\u00a0turkey, pickles, cakes, and in fact everything else that was good to eat, which had been carefully\u00a0prepared by the ladies.<\/p>\n<p>In all, everybody enjoyed themselves hugely, and departed with a wish for the success of the\u00a0Knights of Honor.<\/p>\n<p>About the order. The first Lodge Knights of Honor was organized at Louisville, Ky., June 30, 1873,\u00a0by <strong>J. A. DEMAREE<\/strong> of Louisville and <strong>Dr. D. WILSON<\/strong> of Boston, Mass. with 17 members \u2013 a large majority\u00a0of which were under 21 years of age.\u00a0The first Lodge was organized in Tennessee in November 1873, at Nashville.<\/p>\n<p>Cleveland Lodge No. 157 was organized August 18, 1875 with 9 charter members. Having 50\u00a0members at present, and still growing. There are 375 Lodges in the U. S. There are Lodges in 23 different\u00a0States.
