{"id":2320,"date":"2015-01-31T18:58:40","date_gmt":"2015-02-01T00:58:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/histnews\/?p=2320"},"modified":"2015-01-31T18:59:27","modified_gmt":"2015-02-01T00:59:27","slug":"john-smallin-accident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/histnews\/john-smallin-accident\/","title":{"rendered":"John Smallin Accident (1876)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The accident to <strong>Mr. John SMALLIN<\/strong>, section boss on the Chatata, July the fourth was a serious one to him indeed. \u00a0<strong>Mr. SMALLIN<\/strong> was knocked from the train by the coal box that stands between the two tracks just as the train was pulling out from the depot. \u00a0In his fall his left foot and hand was so badly mashed that the foot and two of his fingers had to be amputated &#8211; <strong>Drs. DAY and LONG<\/strong>, doing the work as we understand. \u00a0The coal box where first erected was pronounced a dangerous concern, and ever since it has been the subject of remarks. \u00a0This is not the first time persons have been hurt at this place, and we do think that the railroad authorities should move it before someone else is ruined for life. \u00a0<strong>Mr. SMALLIN<\/strong> at this writing is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: Weekly Herald (Cleveland, TN); 14 July 1876.
