{"id":2283,"date":"2014-12-22T13:09:16","date_gmt":"2014-12-22T19:09:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/histnews\/?p=2283"},"modified":"2014-12-22T13:09:16","modified_gmt":"2014-12-22T19:09:16","slug":"killed-illicit-distiller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/histnews\/killed-illicit-distiller\/","title":{"rendered":"Killed an Illicit Distiller (1890)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A Deputy United States Marshal&#8217;s Crime in Tennessee<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reports from Knoxville, Tennessee, state that <strong>Bud LINDSAY<\/strong>, deputy United States marshal, shot and killed <strong>KILTS<\/strong>, a distiller, in Campbell county. <strong>\u00a0LINDSAY<\/strong> wished a gallon of whiskey, and <strong>KILTS<\/strong> told him that he could not sell less than ten gallons under his license. \u00a0<strong>LINDSAY<\/strong> got mad and abused <strong>KILTS<\/strong>. \u00a0The distiller&#8217;s fourteen-year-old son threw a rock at <strong>LINDSAY. \u00a0LINDSAY<\/strong> attempted to shoot <strong>KILTS,<\/strong> but his party took his pistol from him. \u00a0They then left, and when a mile away <strong>LINDSAY<\/strong> asked for the pistols, saying he would do no harm. \u00a0He got the pistols and wheeled his horse and rode back to <strong>KILTS<\/strong> house. \u00a0The latter saw him coming and locked the door, but <strong>LINDSAY<\/strong> broke it down and shot <strong>KILTS<\/strong> twice, killing him instantly. \u00a0He then attempted to shoot the boy, but missed him and hit a little girl, but did not seriously wound her. \u00a0It is reported that <strong>LINDSAY&#8217;<\/strong>s party arrested him and gave him over to the sheriff of the county.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Source: Roanoke Beacon newspaper (Plymouth, NC), 13 June 1890, page 1.
