{"id":2196,"date":"2014-08-31T11:11:30","date_gmt":"2014-08-31T16:11:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/histnews\/?p=2196"},"modified":"2014-08-31T11:12:58","modified_gmt":"2014-08-31T16:12:58","slug":"collier-davis-indicted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/histnews\/collier-davis-indicted\/","title":{"rendered":"Collier Davis Indicted (1871)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Excerpt from the Circuit Court column:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Collier DAVIS<\/strong>, colored, indicted for the murder of <strong>Adam WALKER<\/strong>, colored, an old man who, in the language of the attorney defending <strong>DAVIS,<\/strong> stood as it were in the &#8220;twilight of two worlds,&#8221; being over an hundred years of age, and who was murdered at the county Poor House in May last, in the dead hour of night, whilst wrapped in slumber, in a lonely dark cabin, by blows inflicted by a crutch, and all done on the supposition that old man <strong>WALKER<\/strong> was about to\u00a0<em>conjure\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>trick<\/em> him &#8211; well he was arraigned and tried by a jury of his own selection, and found guilty of murder in the second degree, and assigned by the jury to serve fifteen years in the Penitentiary.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Source: Whig &amp; Tribune. 9 September\u00a01871.
