{"id":1543,"date":"2014-02-07T23:40:46","date_gmt":"2014-02-08T05:40:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/histnews\/?p=1543"},"modified":"2014-02-07T23:40:46","modified_gmt":"2014-02-08T05:40:46","slug":"emancipation-anniversary-1907","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/histnews\/emancipation-anniversary-1907\/","title":{"rendered":"Emancipation Anniversary (1907)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Celebration at Lee Avenue Christian Church &#8211; Resolutions Endorsing Senator Foraker Adopted<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An audience composed of some of the best citizens of Nashville assembled at Lea Avenue Christian Church, Tuesday night, January 1, 1907, at 8 o&#8217;clock pm to celebrate the Emancipation. \u00a0<strong>Rev. Preston TAYLOR<\/strong> was made chairman and <strong>William PATTERSON<\/strong>, secretary. \u00a0The exercises opened with a song, &#8220;My country &#8217;tis of thee,&#8221; by choir and congregation. Prayer by <strong>Rev. C.H. BOONE<\/strong>, pastor of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, who was also selected to deliver the opening address. \u00a0He spoke of the progress the race has made since their freedom, admonished them to be loyal to each other and to be more united as a people. \u00a0He spoke along various lines of our station in life and hoped for better results in the future. \u00a0Interesting addresses were made by <strong>Rev. Preston TAYLOR, W.H. HODGKINS, Dr. F.A. STEWART, J.T. TURNER, Hon. J.C. NAPIER, Mr. LANGSTON,<\/strong> Teller of One Cent Savings Bank, and <strong>Matt WHITE,<\/strong> an old comrade of<strong> Lincoln POST<\/strong>, and one of the oldest soldiers living.<\/p>\n<p>Motion by <strong>Mr. J. Thomas TURNER<\/strong> that a vote of thanks be returned the pastor and members of Lea Avenue Christian Chruch for the use of the same. Carried.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mrs. J.C. NAPIER<\/strong>, president of the Day Home, was then introduced and spoke of the organization of the home, its purposes and plans, and urged all to render her aid and assistance for this grand enterprise known as the Porter Homestead, 618 Fourth Avenue South. \u00a0A collection of three dollars and forty-five cents was raised for Brother <strong>Thomas WHITE<\/strong>, a comrade of<strong> Lincoln POST<\/strong>, as a charity donation.<\/p>\n<p>Motion by<strong> J.C.
