Recorder’s Court
- Jack PORTER, frailing negroes, two cases, $6.00
- E.S. HOUSTON, whipped a young man on the day of election, named Berry, for belonging to the militia, and was fined $6.00. The whipped boy lives at J.H. GREGORY’s.
- Wm. HARGROVES, for letting a woman whip him, was fined $2, and for whipping the same woman, was taxed with the cost.
- Kate McGINNIS, for whipping HARGROVES, fined $2
- Wm. VAUGHN, a lineal descendant of Noah’s cursed son, beat his step-daughter, a girl 14 years old, unmercifully, at the instigation of her mother, and the court taxed him with the cost.
- Baalam HILL, like his illustrious namesake who rode the ass, acted badly. The modern Baalam, however, also acted foolishly, and got drunk, for which he was fined $2.
- W.D. KENDRICK, for throwing rocks, breaking jar and spilling preserves, fined $7.50
- Bob PORTER, alias Stump the Barber, either from smelling strong Bay rum or having too much Benzine on the brain, violated the Sabbath, and Recrd’r A. fined him $2.
- Abe LOONEY Jr., for “going for” a sassy negro with a stick, was made to pay $5.
- Rosa WARD, no relation to the Rev. H. WARD B. – whipped her husband, and was fined $2.
- M.S. FREELAND, for ‘saulting’ a negro boy, had to pay $2
- Sandy WILKES, not knowing that justice, in the hands of its guardians, the Police and Recorder of Columbia, is swift-footed against all evil doers, did act badly, and was fined $2.50
- Margaret, the daughter of Africa, disturbed the peace in a way that guardians thought unbecoming a lady of her color, and was taxed with the cost.
