OSMENT, John – (d. 1872)
An Old Citizen Gone – It is with feelings of deep regret that we announce the death of Mr. John OSMENT, which occurred at his residence in this place at 12M, on Saturday last. The disease that terminated his earthly career was dropsy of the chest.
Mr. Osment settled at this place in 1838– 34 years ago– when, what is now Cleveland, was almost a wilderness, where he remained up to his death. In his long intercourse with our people he won an enviable reputation– and his death is mourned by all who knew him. Cleveland has lost one of her best citizens by his death.
By industry and his fine business qualifications, during his life, he amassed a fine property, but the accumulation of this estate was not made by oppressing his fellow man. He lived and died what the world calls a clever man. Some years ago he attached himself to the Presbyterian Church, since which time he has lived the life of a good and pious christian [sic]. He lacked only a few days of being 57 years of age at the time of his death.
He leaves a wife, one daughter, and five sons– all grown– and a host of devoted friends to mourn his loss. Peace to his ashes. (page 4, col 2)
