Lucky Man Finds Treasure (1866)

In Memphis, on the 7th, while workmen were employed moving rubbish from a lot on Jefferson street, between Third and Fourth, a negro found a box containing $27,000 in gold. It is supposed to have belonged to an old gentleman who owned the premises where it was found, and who died several months ago. The lucky finder immediately departed for parts unknown, taking the treasure with him.
