Index Interpretation

The entries included in the TNGenWeb Historical News Index Portal are designed to help you find specific newspaper articles about people. Entries are arranged by name and provide brief details about the context in which the person’s name appears in each article.

Please keep in mind that we selectively index the newspaper, with a focus on regional items and articles relevant to genealogy. We try to always capture vital events (births, marriages, and deaths), and news items that mention family relationships. We do not index the entire newspaper issue, thus, it is always a good idea to follow-up and obtain the full newspaper. We can help you with that.

Here are some tips to keep in mind as you look at entries in the index:

  • “(—–)” in the first name field means the name was not given in the article
  • “<…>” means the text was not readable to the indexer.
