Horse Stealing (1866)
A few days since a horse was stolen from S.A. HUMPHREYS, of Blount county, by W.L. DUFF, of Grainger county. The thief was followed to this place and arrested by Esquire James MATHEWS and George GRIFFITH. He confessed his guilt, and was taken to Maryville and lodged in jail. On Thursday night a horse was stolen from Gen. W.C. KYLE, of Hawkins county. Thief unknown. There seems to be a mania for horse stealing all over the country. It would be well to hang some persons for this offense, and make an example that would remedy, if not stop, the evil. (pg. 3)
