Gen. R. V. Richardson Under a Cloud (1867)
Everybody has heard of Gen. R. V. RICHARDSON, of the C.S.A., who held the surrounding country in terror during the war, conscripting and marauding with recklessness which brought him the animadversions of his superior officers in the rebel army. This hero, notwithstanding his shining exploits during the “times of unpleasantness” as the Nasby calls them, is now under a cloud. On Thursday last he was held in bonds of $5,000, for swindling, by Judge HUNTER, of the Criminal Court. It appears that the General has been getting up an immense Southern Company with a capital of some $20,000,000, which by a beneficent management, was intended to enrich every many, woman and child in the “land we love”. A young man in Mobile took $1,250 stock with the assurance of a valuable position. He waited patiently for his appointment, but hearing nothing further, he came to this city and found himself swindled. We are told that Gen. RICHARDSON was formerly a Methodist class leader and at one time Attorney General for this county. (Memphis Post, 29th Dec, 1866)
